Continuation of the AIBU to think my friend is overdoing emergency stockpiling thread for discussion about the government advice to stockpile for an imminent emergency and what the heck that emergency might actually be.

Spoiler: it's more of a perfect storm of lots of factors coming together to potentially form one great clusterfuck from economic woes, global energy shortages (mainly diesel), potential food shortages, war and madmen to crazy weather patterns rather than a clear identifiable singular thread.
This is a practical thread and a bit of a handhold thread to make sense of events and how they may affect you. This is not an end of the world thread.

Remember an emergency can range from a temporary unexpected event to a much longer crisis but the underlying principles generally stay the same.

This is the official government information and advice, if you want further details on what the actual recommendations are:
https://prepare.campaign.gov.uk/get-prepared-for-emergencies/

ROUGH STATUS REPORT (as of 9am 22nd Oct - please note this isn't fully comprehensive, and is moving FAST)
Civil Unrest reported in:
France, Italy, Greece, Belgium, Albania, Indonesia - multi reasons, but largely due to economic pressures and the cost of living
Spain has had problems but these have temporarily stopped, probably due to significant weather related issues due to the Dana effect
More protests planned for this coming weekend
High Alert in the Middle East:
Netanyahu now committed to regime change in Iran, as he believes they are developing a nuke.
The US has pulled all Embassy Staff from Saudi Arabia and is hoping no one notices that they've ordered personal and families across the Gulf home and then seem to have lied that they have.
The Emir of Qatar has stated at their equivalent of the annual King's Speech at the Opening of Parliament that war was coming and to prepare for the worst scenarios. US pulling planes out of Qatar.
The Egyptian PM has warned the country of severe crisis ahead - given the nature of the country this is related to their alliance with Saudi Arabia and their reliance on the Suez Canal which the Yemeni rebels now control access to and their exposure to famine
Iran is saying if there is another attack, the gloves are off and they'll try and wipe out the middle east oil industry as they go down, as well as hitting critical civilian infrastructure.
Much movement / noise is similar to run up to the first US attacks this year. Debate over whether the attack will come before the Israeli Election or the US Midterms - possibly within 72hours - latest mood music suggests potentially this weekend. Seems to be shifting to a when not if.
Israel election: 27th Oct
Prices and Shortages:
Diesel needs no real reminder - we need it for haulage, mass transportation and farming, we are screwed without it. Fuel Emergency declarations in West Virgina, Kentucky, Michigan, Maryland, Arizona, Nebraska and Texas - typically allowing limited dyed diesel use for ag or commercial vehicles. Illinois and Missouri have also allowed by not under emergency orders. Less reported is the fertiliser shortage and knock on effect, poor yields this year and the effect of El Nino on next years, sulphur export bans and the blockade on Ukrainian and Russian wheat exports which are particularly crucial in feeding North Africa and the Middle East. This is liable to have significant impact on the UK with 6% rises in food already expected next year (and there's every reason to believe this will be higher especially with civil unrest all over the place). Reports of aviation fuel running low in some parts of Europe with emergency supplies (which can't last forever) being used.
El Nino:
See above about farming and also think of disasters - like the ones Spain is facing with flooding. Storm Austin is incoming and there is a weather warning for the South of England with power outages and flooding possible today/tomorrow.
The Internet:
PHP is 70% of the internet. Its got compromised so it can pretty much all be hacked. This is VERY BAD (in capital letters). Many websites offline whilst this is sorted including multiple government ones around the world.
Just AI generally - everything from putting everyone out of work to just hacking and killing us all. No Biggie.
Trump and the Mid Terms:
Trump is firmly losing his marbles. He's defected to Russia, can't stop rambling about men's arses, is waving at non-existent people, his team are known to be considering ways to impose martial law, he's getting heckled at Trump rallies by his own supporters, 83% of all voters think the biggest problem in the US now isn't the cost of living crisis but government corruption. He's being called a traitor by some of his fellow Reds. Mid Terms look a disaster and Trump probably won't accept them. He's reversing bills that Congress passed weeks ago by executive order.
Mid-Terms: 3rd Nov
Ukraine and Russia:
Ukraine facing massive problems still cos Elon has got the ump. Starlink isn't working at face enough speeds. They've bombed a shedload of Data Centres in Russia. This has killed off the Russian Internet and many Trump/Musk supporters in the process (one way or another) which screws up Twitter (and its value) for them. Ukraine is getting blamed for diesel shortages cos they refuse to stop hitting Russian refineries even though it has no choice now its been cut off by the US. Zelenskyy now says Trump isn't an ally. Trump wants Zelensky gone and thinks Putin is being reasonable and Ukraine doesn't want peace. Germany states it would have activated Art5 if the confirmed Russian sabotage attack on Liepzig had been successful.
Russia is apparently planning to step up its sabotage campaign in Europe after having successfully sunk a few boats in EU waters (Romania / Bulgaria - these sinkings have been in both international waters off the coast AND within their official territorial waters).
Economy:
Lots of debt. Much concern over the implications of this particularly with regards to AI and state debt in the US, UK, France and Japan (but not restricted to). Much money put into gold by China. Background of this bad given the approach of potentially multiple crisis.
France Moody's credit review: Due tomorrow 23rd Oct - expected to be not good especially in the current political climate in France
UK Budget: 28th October

They are all interconnected and one or many could tip us into abject chaos. Or not. The risks here are sky high. Of what? Take your pick.

But cyberattacks will most definitely affect our economy by stealing money and personal information, not to mention disrupting online banking and shopping. They will also damage businesses and lead to severe job losses.

I don’t disagree, but it’s finance/money where people should be prioritising their prepping.

It all flows from that.

Fear can stop you from acting.

Try to manage the fear and take steps to protect yourself and your household.

For the single mum on a budget I’ve bought a lot of own brand cereal and oats and uht milk, cheap peanut butter and jam/honey. It’s things I know my children will eat and won’t require cooking. I know it’s not the healthiest of options but it will keep them full and happy for a while.

NoisyStreet · 23/10/2026 09:55

I have done the same @ProudCoralBear A just in case shelf in the larder with long life milk, cereals, nuts, pot noodle type things as i have also stored water and have a kelly kettle to heat it with. Also tinned things that come in water or juice. I don't have young children but if I did I'd have long life versions of things they like and could eat cold if there was a lengthy power cut.

Itsthewoluff · 23/10/2026 10:02

My delivery is due today and I wondered if I’d get the water I’d ordered, (Already prepped plenty of everything else), but I’ve just had notification it’s been picked so I should get it later. I should imagine there will be a rush on that sort of thing if the newspapers are running it in the front page.

threetrainers · 23/10/2026 10:04

The food doesn’t bother me so much but if money starts disappearing that will cause utter chaos surely.

YouAreMyDoggySunshine · 23/10/2026 11:47

A few years ago I grew tomatoes and lettuce in my south west conservatory. They were very easy to grow. I did try other things but they were less successful. I might be glad of that conservatory next year then. It's already useful for drying clothes on days where it's sunny but showery.

Like someone mentioned great if you can grow things but if it's outside will they be stolen? I know someone could break into the conservatory too but I suppose it feels a little bit more secure than the garden.

Kind of scary that I am even thinking I might have to grow veggies next year as opposed to dabbling about as a wee hobby.

YouAreMyDoggySunshine · 23/10/2026 11:53

Seeing some really big food price rises. Just done a shop at Tesco and one of my favourites/usual items are the little tubs of prawn cocktail. For a long time they used to have it on special 2 for £4.50 I think it was. No deal now and the price per tub is £3.25. I mean that is not far off a 50% increase.

I usually buy a bag of prawns to put into it as there is never enough prawns but I do love the sauce in the tubs. It's becoming a very expensive meal.

Meanwhile I have a very spoilt dog who has lived 13 years eating lots of steak, lamb, venison etc. I switched to the 'cheap' steak and he refused to eat it. AIBU to make him get a job as his food is costing me a bloody fortune now. (I still have my sense of humour at least although the food prices are not remotely funny!)

I think some looters will also pretend to be legit visitors, e.g. 'I've come to check your gas supply...' and they'll even have an ID of some kind but it'll be fake, you won't be able to call anyone to check, and if you believe them and open your door, well that's easy access isn't it, they trick their way into your home, then they can take your supplies.

If we’ve hit the point of looting, I wouldn’t be opening the door for anyone no matter how official they seemed to be. They can come back when society is back under control.

colouringindoors · 23/10/2026 12:31

Thanks RTB. I've been following this with interest.

I was really struck by my normally sensible siblings' reactions to the Be Ready launch yesterday. One is burying their head in the sand, one thinks it's only cos of Russia, and the other is silent

While the checklist on the website seems doable to me (and as others have said, basic) their reactions have been negative (despite being well-educated) - too much etc - so I don't think the govt could have put more in it.

We are too used to having everything on demand, and these measures seem eminently sensible to me.

Oh and afaik the Albania protests are Alabanian's protesting against Trump's attempts to buy up their stunning coastline!

Off now to review old camping kit... pretty sure there's an LED lantern that lights for days on one set of batteries 😅

NippyNinjaCrab · 23/10/2026 12:37

I feel very worried now, i was following the threads and the latest update is scary. I've stocked up on batteries, firelighters (we have a burner) matches, candles and an AM, FM, SW radio. We have some tins but need to top up water, the fruitcake above was a good addition, my DH didnt seem bothered last night but this morning he agreed to make a wee list for what we need.
I really hope that the worst does not happen.

NippyNinjaCrab · 23/10/2026 12:39

What documents are you collating? Personal such as passport, birth certs and should we add marriage certs? I don't know why i am thinking that, maybe i have watched too much of handmaid's tale 🤔

It's probably worth have contact details for insurance and utilities, as well as account numbers - DH was away the other week, TalkTalk wouldn't talk to me as I'm not the account holder, but she did say if I could give her the account number, she'd tell me what they'd found when they did their checks. Maybe not a bad idea to have details of any savings/credit card accounts in case there's a blip on the system.

I don't really think they would politely knock your door if hungry/no money, etc.
Lots of people would be robbed, that's for sure.

Well, the was talking about the sneaky ones mentioned in the post.

Happily for me I think the other ones might find my house a bit too harmful to their health and so they look to easier option.

It’s all pretty expensive. It’s a good way to get people spending.

When things like air con or other kit gets talked about I try to opt out as just so much stuff in the house already. But I am considering some of these items.

Reading the gov water and sanitation scripts for media published December 2025. Script day two and onwards if you don't have water purification tablets or are able to boil water :-

"You can use regular household bleach, ideally unscented. It is important not to use too much bleach. Add approximately one-quarter of a teaspoon of unscented, household bleach for every 10 litres of water (approximately one bucket). Leave it to stand for 15 minutes."

😫

I would never have believed this if I was to hear this for the first time. I have always understood bleach to be poison! My goodness what a discovery. I can't be the only one to be a bit mind blown by this? Anyway off to check my bleach is unscented...

Yes, this is how you clean out water containers when you are rotating water.

What do you think you are swimming in when you go to the local swimming pool?

I don't drink the pool water.

srethoos · 23/10/2026 14:13

AndyouWILLATONE · 23/10/2026 14:02

I don't drink the pool water.

It's not poisonous though at that concentration or it wouldn't work as a swimming pool. Plenty of people do accidentally swallow it and all the wee that must be in there too.

It's like vinegar - at about 5% concentration it's fine for food; above about 15% strength it's fine for cleaning but will cause chemical burns to your oesophagus if you drink it; over 50% and drinking it can kill you. It's all still vinegar.
