Continuation of the AIBU to think my friend is overdoing emergency stockpiling thread for discussion about the government advice to stockpile for an imminent emergency and what the heck that emergency might actually be.

Spoiler: it's more of a perfect storm of lots of factors coming together to potentially form one great clusterfuck from economic woes, global energy shortages (mainly diesel), potential food shortages, war and madmen to crazy weather patterns rather than a clear identifiable singular thread.
This is a practical thread and a bit of a handhold thread to make sense of events and how they may affect you. This is not an end of the world thread.

Remember an emergency can range from a temporary unexpected event to a much longer crisis but the underlying principles generally stay the same.

This is the official government information and advice, if you want further details on what the actual recommendations are:
https://prepare.campaign.gov.uk/get-prepared-for-emergencies/

ROUGH STATUS REPORT (as of 9am 22nd Oct - please note this isn't fully comprehensive, and is moving FAST)
Civil Unrest reported in:
France, Italy, Greece, Belgium, Albania, Indonesia - multi reasons, but largely due to economic pressures and the cost of living
Spain has had problems but these have temporarily stopped, probably due to significant weather related issues due to the Dana effect
More protests planned for this coming weekend
High Alert in the Middle East:
Netanyahu now committed to regime change in Iran, as he believes they are developing a nuke.
The US has pulled all Embassy Staff from Saudi Arabia and is hoping no one notices that they've ordered personal and families across the Gulf home and then seem to have lied that they have.
The Emir of Qatar has stated at their equivalent of the annual King's Speech at the Opening of Parliament that war was coming and to prepare for the worst scenarios. US pulling planes out of Qatar.
The Egyptian PM has warned the country of severe crisis ahead - given the nature of the country this is related to their alliance with Saudi Arabia and their reliance on the Suez Canal which the Yemeni rebels now control access to and their exposure to famine
Iran is saying if there is another attack, the gloves are off and they'll try and wipe out the middle east oil industry as they go down, as well as hitting critical civilian infrastructure.
Much movement / noise is similar to run up to the first US attacks this year. Debate over whether the attack will come before the Israeli Election or the US Midterms - possibly within 72hours - latest mood music suggests potentially this weekend. Seems to be shifting to a when not if.
Israel election: 27th Oct
Prices and Shortages:
Diesel needs no real reminder - we need it for haulage, mass transportation and farming, we are screwed without it. Fuel Emergency declarations in West Virgina, Kentucky, Michigan, Maryland, Arizona, Nebraska and Texas - typically allowing limited dyed diesel use for ag or commercial vehicles. Illinois and Missouri have also allowed by not under emergency orders. Less reported is the fertiliser shortage and knock on effect, poor yields this year and the effect of El Nino on next years, sulphur export bans and the blockade on Ukrainian and Russian wheat exports which are particularly crucial in feeding North Africa and the Middle East. This is liable to have significant impact on the UK with 6% rises in food already expected next year (and there's every reason to believe this will be higher especially with civil unrest all over the place). Reports of aviation fuel running low in some parts of Europe with emergency supplies (which can't last forever) being used.
El Nino:
See above about farming and also think of disasters - like the ones Spain is facing with flooding. Storm Austin is incoming and there is a weather warning for the South of England with power outages and flooding possible today/tomorrow.
The Internet:
PHP is 70% of the internet. Its got compromised so it can pretty much all be hacked. This is VERY BAD (in capital letters). Many websites offline whilst this is sorted including multiple government ones around the world.
Just AI generally - everything from putting everyone out of work to just hacking and killing us all. No Biggie.
Trump and the Mid Terms:
Trump is firmly losing his marbles. He's defected to Russia, can't stop rambling about men's arses, is waving at non-existent people, his team are known to be considering ways to impose martial law, he's getting heckled at Trump rallies by his own supporters, 83% of all voters think the biggest problem in the US now isn't the cost of living crisis but government corruption. He's being called a traitor by some of his fellow Reds. Mid Terms look a disaster and Trump probably won't accept them. He's reversing bills that Congress passed weeks ago by executive order.
Mid-Terms: 3rd Nov
Ukraine and Russia:
Ukraine facing massive problems still cos Elon has got the ump. Starlink isn't working at face enough speeds. They've bombed a shedload of Data Centres in Russia. This has killed off the Russian Internet and many Trump/Musk supporters in the process (one way or another) which screws up Twitter (and its value) for them. Ukraine is getting blamed for diesel shortages cos they refuse to stop hitting Russian refineries even though it has no choice now its been cut off by the US. Zelenskyy now says Trump isn't an ally. Trump wants Zelensky gone and thinks Putin is being reasonable and Ukraine doesn't want peace. Germany states it would have activated Art5 if the confirmed Russian sabotage attack on Liepzig had been successful.
Russia is apparently planning to step up its sabotage campaign in Europe after having successfully sunk a few boats in EU waters (Romania / Bulgaria - these sinkings have been in both international waters off the coast AND within their official territorial waters).
Economy:
Lots of debt. Much concern over the implications of this particularly with regards to AI and state debt in the US, UK, France and Japan (but not restricted to). Much money put into gold by China. Background of this bad given the approach of potentially multiple crisis.
France Moody's credit review: Due tomorrow 23rd Oct - expected to be not good especially in the current political climate in France
UK Budget: 28th October

They are all interconnected and one or many could tip us into abject chaos. Or not. The risks here are sky high. Of what? Take your pick.

Back from holiday so back to squirrelling things away, filling empty bottles with water and put some toilet rolls and olives in the shed, DH will go in that shed to get the halloween decorations tomorrow and i think he will be surprised what's in there! Its still not enough though

Ha! Grape jelly seems very posh. "It's the apocalypse but would you enjoy a spot of grape jelly? I made it for this very moment!" 😂

As an American grape jelly sounds the opposite of posh to me. It's only slightly above marshmallow fluff in the foodstuffs hierarchy!

I wish I could stockpile my prescription medications - a couple of weeks worth would be reassuring. I'll try ordering them a few days early but when I've ordered them too early in the past the request has been rejected.

I definitely think the words ”Posh Grape Jelly” should somehow be in the title in thread number 4 @RedToothBrush! 😂

But yeah, American grape jelly is truly nasty.

WaffleMacGubbins · 24/10/2026 19:45

It's hard to say where I should draw the "that's good enough" line in the sand. That's my current thought anyway.

How much food/water should I store? The gov says 3 days. Then seems to me to be a fudge based on not causing panic and acknowledging that people have limited budgets and storage space. What's a more sensible amount of time to prepare for if we can afford it and can store it, but we don't intend to build a bunker? A week? Two? Four?

Do I need a camping stove if non of the tined food needs cooking? How much money and storage space are more pleasant meals worth? How many gas canisters would I need? Do we need sleeping bags when we have duvets and blankets? These are not things we'll ever use it in normal life. We have never camped and never intend to!

I have made a start at becoming more offline organised. I've started an apocalyptic notebook with family phone numbers, bank account, pension details, insurance numbers. Need to print out documents and add them in. Will write out an inventory of what food/drinks I have (with BBD so I can remember to rotate it out and use it before it goes off if the shit stays away from the fan) and estimate how many days I have stored.
Also writing the new bits of knowledge down like how to treat rainwater with bleach to make it safe to drink. Did you know in the absence of being able to boil water, or chemically treat with tablets or bleach, you can leave bottles of water out in the sun. The UV kills some bacteria. Six hours on a sunny day. 2 days if it's cloudy. Better than nothing I suppose. (filter it first through a pillow case. The water needs to be clear before you start)
Need to get all my important documents together to put with my filofax of doom, add some cash and put it in a zip lock bag. Then need to organise some grab bags for us all.

WaffleMacGubbins · 24/10/2026 19:56

Also I'm thinking that if we had any sort of warning of shit hitting the fan, what should we prioritise in the minutes or hours of notice we had?

Fill containers with water while the taps worked - non negotiable!
Charge everything while the electric is on - another non negotiable!
Phone family to check in with them

But...
Last panic buying trip to tesco? Yay or nay?
Drive to collect elderly relatives?
Start cooking joints of meat from the freezer?

What else?

What would the final moments of prepping be to give you the best "3 days" where nothing worked?

GentleSheep · 24/10/2026 20:15

I'm really not sure we'd get any notice. I think THIS is the notice, the 'Be Ready' advice, such as it is. If a cyber attack happens there is no warning, the power goes 'poof'. You won't know whether it's a small local power outage or something more, it might take a few hours to find out from the news what is going on.

I would not go out panic buying, you should have what you need already. Collect elderly relatives? Yes that sounds more sensible, but at what point do you do that? Assess the situation first before going anywhere. There may not be access to Mumsnet to find out what's happening.

DorothyParker111 · 24/10/2026 20:45

HeckYeah · 24/10/2026 18:05

Not sure I feel robust at the moment..

Then honestly I would leave it for now. The whole narrative is just too horribly plausible atm

Troubledwords · 24/10/2026 20:52

Clocks change overnight, and apart from the kitchen clock all mine are digital, via phone or smartwatch, so I'm thinking about whether it would be worth getting a regular watch, if only to keep in the emergency bag. Just take it out twice a year to keep it correct and check the battery still works?

Probably right tbh.
It is a bit close to the mark.
I do find it intriguing though in that it's not an instant scenario, but a gradual creep.

Yeah if you put the word American in it then yeah I don’t want it no offence 😅

Nor do I want marshmallow fluff. Lidl apparently is having an American week and it does not look very appealing.

Holeymoley28 · 24/10/2026 21:35

We have some old style watches somewhere I should probably make sure I know where.

I dabble in hypothetical Reddit at times and depending on the warning times and what it is I flit between fuck it bottle of wine on the lawn and boom dead and tape up all the cracks and hide in the pantry for 24 hours 😅

So my thinking is that 3 days means 3 days where the govt doesn't need to worry about you but can get on with worrying about all those who really need help but haven't been able to get enough supplies or there's just too much emergency stuff going on. However this doesn't magically disappear as day 4 dawns, does it!

A prepper I listened to today mentioned the 'Protest and Survive' leaflet of the 80s and said there the govt recommended 14 days of supplies! People would faint if you told them that today! Plus if you look at the leaflet on page one it has a nuclear explosion, not terribly reassuring! 😅That booklet was next level! Linked below for those brave enough to see:

https://www.peaceeducationscotland.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/1980-uk-gov-protect-survive.pdf

Three days is by comparison enough for a long holiday weekend or Christmas! Plus no needing to build a fallout room!

GentleSheep · 24/10/2026 22:23

Holeymoley28 · 24/10/2026 18:02

I may or may not have a jar of quince jelly in the fridge. 🤣

When shit hits the fan we shall have to eat the fancy things the children leave alone. Oh the shame 😂😂 A family member makes some lovely duck and liver pate. Wonderful on some crusty bread. Jars of pesto will come into their own haha

No beans for me no no. Fabulous jellies and such.

Quince jelly?!? I'll get my tiara! 😂

I remember my parents showing me that leaflet when I was primary school age. Berlin wall had just fallen, so just at the end of the madness. Bloody terrifying leaflet!

MrsPernicious · 24/10/2026 22:41

The quinces this year are bloody awful. They were really small until the rain finally arrived and they quickly swelled to full size. Full of internal bruising and not particularly good for anything. I'm assuming they have all fallen this weekend. Better go and pick up a hundred of the buggers tomorrow.

PreparationPreventsPPP · 24/10/2026 22:55

@WaffleMacGubbins I was also thinking this today ,immediate actions and I think i agree on getting water into the bath ? Fill up the bath and and maybe fill buckets outside from hose ?
Immediatly get things fully charged ? Lamps /phones / anything ...

No elderly relatives here but if we did , yes immediate driver to be dispatched.
I think get the camp stove going so we can get hot water bottles filled instantly and hot drinks in flasks.

With no heating in a snow storm having sleeping bags inside normal bedding would be useful insulation. Along with thermal stuff of course and the hot water bottle.

  • Re gas canisters I'm interested to know as well how many do we need ? We have a one ring burner and four gas canisters ?

My biggest gap now is lighting , we have torches and some candles and battery operated candles but no proper bright lights.

PreparationPreventsPPP · 24/10/2026 22:57
  • I was part raised on corned beef so I think I will get some and also has anyone tried this tube cheese ?

Sorry if this has been discussed upthread already, but how do we keep warm in winter if there is no electricity/gas? I can happily live on canned food & cereal and UHT milk for a few days but no heating will be a struggle.

And why do we need copies of passport etc?

I'm sure this has been replied to but a camping stove and hot water bottles !
They will keep you very warm esp with hats and thermals and a sleeping bag.

If I wanted to boil water very quickly and efficiently I would get one of these. They take about 3 minutes. I have one and absolutely love it. https://alpkit.com/products/brukit?variant=31073013563497

If I wanted a cooking stove and needed something inexpensive I would go for something like this. There are lots of variation on it but this one has a wide surface for placing pans. The main thing is that the gas is well out of the way of the cooking area, connected by a hose..
https://www.blacks.co.uk/products/oex-savo-stove-silver-636246?variant=53568505151818

Both take the same screwable gas which is around £7-9 for a 500g cannister. The canister would last about a week of moderate use.

I feel both options are safer than the type of stove where the gas clicks in to the unit. If you have one of those, you must be careful not to use a pan that is too big as there have been incredibly rare accidents where this has caused to gas canister to ignite. There are demonstration of this on YouTube. I've used one safely for years and only recently become aware of the issue, main thing is to use a suitably sized pan of you have one. A small kettle would be ok. I would get a camping stove kettle - £5-10 as they'll be more efficient. Camping frying pan also more efficient and safer than your typical big stainless steel pans that you would have in the kitchen.

Edited

We have the small camping stove how does a pan cause it to ignite ?

The small suitcase type stoves these three canisters that look like aerosols clip into. A large pan allows unburnt gas to collect under, it can flare and ignite the canister. The canister will be heated up by a pan that is too large and too close. There are demos on YouTube

It says 1 pint water per person per day, that's just 1.1 litre! Were people that much smaller then? 😂Also the sheer amount of stuff you were meant to put in your fallout shelter which was realistically only going to be a tiny space! Absolutely bonkers. But at least it was very detailed, can you imagine today, a run on sandbags? 😂
