To ask what food you think is overrated

Pasta! Everyone seems to love it but I think it’s seriously overrated and pretty plain/ boring. Would never order it in a restaurant. What food does everyone love but you think is overrated?

I had a Greggs sausage roll for the first time this week. Not impressed 🤢

Don't try the vegan one!
Pale and insipid
Heavy on the herb - maybe sage
Coats the inside of your mouth with a vegan lard .

Roast dinners. One of the most boring meals ever yet everyone bangs on about them as if it's some amazing sacred magical food. I'll eat one, they're inoffensive, but it's just so dull I get bored halfway through.

Bacon. Don't get it. Especially cold bacon in a BLT (which is an awful combo IMO) or a chicken and bacon sandwich. Bacon added to a nice burger always ruins it too.

Poached eggs. Give me scrambled any day.

All this "hot honey" stuff that's everywhere now. Hot honey on chicken wings etc.

Bacon is the food of the gods and the reason why most people can't become vegetarian.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 17/10/2026 23:46

Chocolate. Greasy and overly sweet.

Chicken. Bland with a weird taste and smell.

Anything smoked. Taste of old cigarettes. Although I can cope with smoked cheese.

bloomingheather · 17/10/2026 23:49

Brownies. I love most cakes but I don’t get why they are so popular. Also Matcha and Chia pudding - it looks like slime and tastes like slime, no matter how many flavours M&S pair it with to make it sound appetising…..

Modernschooling · 17/10/2026 23:55

@Thesummer but roasts aren’t supposed to be exciting, just the exactly right combination of predictable tastes with a nice chewy /creamy / soft mouthfeel.
When you need to know what’s coming, like a Maccys or Greg’s or even sushi or avocado on toast.

Modernschooling · 17/10/2026 23:59

Rye bread is overrated. Sweet and a wrong overly wet texture.
Agree lobster is nothing compared to crab.
Tea. Weird tasting.

See if I am ever tempted to eat bacon, I just remind myself that it causes cancer and then I can't bring myself to.

Sadly I can't say the same for alcohol.

Hot honey. FFS does it have to be on everything.

They're not what they used to be (nothing is). They used to be lovely. I could easily do 4 in a sitting 15 years ago.
All the juice and joy has gone out of them now.

Hot Honey bastard Jaffa Cakes in the shop near me. Absolutely no need.

MarcusBrigstockesfringe · 18/10/2026 10:30

I've never had hot honey or heard of it except on MN, but I don't like cold honey so I can't imagine I would like it.

It makes me think of hot goats cheese. Which is absolutely revolting when it's been heated.

user67584329 · 18/10/2026 10:39

Fish and chips. Two different textures of bland, claggy fried food. Only useful as carriers for salt and vinegar.

SabrinaThwaite · 17/10/2026 22:16

Can anyone overrate sprouts?

They are vile little green balls of nastiness.

I would happily eat a plate of sprouts instead of Christmas dinner. I love them!

Hot honey has spice or chilli added.

I had this very rant yesterday, we went to the pub for lunch they had a new menu. Be as well calling it the Hot Honey menu, who is responsible for this ?

LondonLass2026 · 18/10/2026 11:01

Olives.

Woofy12 · 18/10/2026 11:35

Anything that needs a ton of flavour added onto it to make it taste half decent

Oh yes, hot smelly cheese. If blue cheese smells already, why heat it up and ruin a broccoli soup with it, or smear it over pasta so it smells rank.

Also, heated or not: parmesan. If I wanted to eat the grated skin from old men's unwashed feet, I'd have a niche page on the dark web. Do not sprinkle them all over my salad without asking first.

My son thinks Gregg's vegan sausage rolls are food of the Gods. He lives abroad and they're one of the first things I have to buy when he comes home.

Eat 15 in a row and you will instantly love them. I did it once when drunk and now I eat them for pleasure!

Gwenhwyfar · 18/10/2026 12:45

Norwaygirl · 17/10/2026 16:51

Carrot cake, it tastes like soil. I would have to be starving to death to eat it.

I love the 'icing'.

Gwenhwyfar · 18/10/2026 12:46

"Pasta! Everyone seems to love it"

Pasta's all about the sauce. Of course it's boring on its own.
I love it in restaurants, but they probably do make a lot of money on pasta meals.

I live sourdough bread as well.

Definitely agree!🤑 Also goats cheese

Potatoes and pasta.

I don't see the point. Just a bland vehicle for better food. I wouldn't waste calories on them.

Potatoes is because they're cheap and quite healthy so a good basic food.
Pasta similar I suppose.

And what's wrong with being a 'vehicle' for other food? Bread is often the same.
