About the NEETS
something that really bothers me is that we have such a shortage in essential areas like electricians, plumbers, builders - but it seems incredibly hard to get an apprenticeship and I understand that kids say they’re still not really told about the trades in schools.
Something else I heard is that they are put off if they see parents having physical problems after years in those jobs. I completely understand that. The ones I know have generally moved off into other areas like Planning and supervision by the time they get to the age though. I suppose those are the ones who are going to encourage their children to go for these kinds of careers. Most careers aren’t forever anyway.
I don’t claim to have specialist knowledge of this kind of thing…. I can’t shake the feeling that we’re sitting on a lot of untapped skills and energy. And to use an example of red tape, my mum knows a tradesman who tried to talk to the local college about setting up work experience. They turned him down. He didn’t give me chapter and verse on this but the impression I got from him was that they just couldn’t be bothered. And it’s such a shame.
He does have some lads working with him, mostly through word-of-mouth. But he was quite prepared to be part of a proper scheme and his enthusiasm was just rejected. I don’t get it.
Anyway, I’m sure Andy Burnham’s argument will be partly anchored in trying to get certain skills from Europe…. But the impression I’m under is that we’ve spent years discouraging our own young people from doing these kinds of jobs.
all while encouraging them to go to university, which does nothing for them except get them in debt.
edit - this isn’t the fault of the current government, obviously, and I know they’re investing in Technical excellence Colleges with a view to investing in some of these skills.
