Why Gaza?

Mixymaxymoxy · 10/10/2026 21:27

There are several atrocities happening in the world that could be described as genocides. Sudan, DCR, Rohingya in Myanmar, Yazidi in Iraq,

why has the Gaza / Palestinian cause motivated young people in the west more than any of the above ?

if you are a protester, how do to decide which cause to protest about ? If your children are protesting, why do you think they chose this one ?

I’m 54 and was not politically active when I was younger. I’m seeing the protests in France and elsewhere and wondering why Gaza so much part of the protests?

Just bog standard, age-old anti-Semitism, I imagine.

Well, that attitude is part of the issue!

Sartre · 11/10/2026 07:51

Critical thinking requires reading extensively into both sides of any argument. Right now I’m reading a pro Israel book called Why the Jews? and it’s been quite eye opening. I accept its bias but it’s always interesting to read more about the historical nature of antisemitism and how it’s pretty much been a thing since Ancient Egypt. Then I read the pro Palestine side a few months ago - 100 years’ war on Palestine.

In the book I’m reading now they mention the fact lefties don’t seem interested in Sudan or Iran, they’re only bothered when they can have a jab at Jews. I’m half Jewish so find it interesting. My family wants a two state solution.

Bevause it triggered millions of Muslims whom many are anti semitic. I grew up in Muslim majority country and believe me kids are taught that Jewish are the devils. And there is a generation of young westerners looking for a cause in their boredom and relatively cushy world. The likes of Hamas supporters are better at utilising social media as well to garner their support.

I think this is probably an important point. Look at the numbers. How many Jews are there in the world? How many Muslims? How many Muslim countries? How many of these countries are hostile to Israel? Other countries such as Russia or China are also not friendly to Israel.

If children in muslim countries are being bought up to hate Jews, this is going to have a huge impact. New outlets, social media, university funding - who is influencing all of these.

And since politicians care about votes, they are going to ignore the minority of Jewish voters plus others who care about Israel, and worry about the Muslim vote.

Cherrycoko · 11/10/2026 07:54

No Jews no news. Simple as that. I don't think that the young people necessarily know that, though. They are being led by the nose by some extremely bad faith actors.

noblegiraffe · 11/10/2026 07:59

The idea that the kids protest about Gaza because our government is complicit doesn't really stand up when you consider Spain. The Spanish government stopped arms sales, recognised Palestine and withdrew its ambassador from, Israel, relations with Israel are pretty hostile and still they march.

kerstina · 11/10/2026 07:59

Suggest young people are horrified by what has been shown on their television .What has happened to ordinary people in Gaza. Just completely flattened . I have watched Israel go in with bulldozers for years when the Palestinians try to fight back but this is on another level.

OneoftheWeddingPeople · 11/10/2026 08:00

Exactly. Clueless types on this thread who claim they are not anti semites but the content they consume is. So they become so without even realising it.

Jewishcraic · 11/10/2026 08:02

Think of it this way. Imagine someone gave you all the money in the world to promote awareness of an issue they want promoting. Maybe its child cancer, or stroke awareness, or icecaps melting, or slavery, or the evilness of pineapple on pizza. Whatever. You hire staff and get working on promoting this issue. Hire people to write news articles and make tiktoks and plan demonstrations. Suddenly there is a lot more awareness of this issue and everyone is talking about it. People start joining the demonstrations. Politicians start talking about it. It gains momentum all on its in own and grows far beyond your efforts.

localnotail · 11/10/2026 08:13

Because Palestinian flag and all other Palestinian attributes and slogans are now a fashionable and simple symbol among the kids who need a reason to protest against the establishment - just as supporting Che Guevara used to be fashionable, or being a communist, for example. Did people knew much about the realities of Communism or about ins and outs of Mexican revolution? I doubt that. All they could see was anti-western sentiment and an easy "them against us" ideology.

Most of the current Pali supporters have very little knowledge of the conflict or of the history of the region, which shows itself in blind willingness to belive Hamas propaganda and to repeat claims of "genocide" ad nauseum.

And if it was not about anti-semitism then why in UK and elsewhere Jewish people and institutions with no connection to Israel government are being attacked? Why peaceful population of Stamford Hill have to endure twats in cars with Palestinian flags driving around shouting offensive shit?

'Try to fight back'. That's the sort of attitude the OP is talking about. What happened on the 7th of October was beyond belief and yet people like you defend it as being legitimate self defense. This isn't some David and Goliath story. Hamas is propped up by a lot of big money, and they are very bad news for the people of Gaza as well as for Israel.

Darkermornings · 11/10/2026 08:24

AntiZionism originates in the Soviet Union so it’s always been a lefty thing, so it got a head start there. Because of this it’s always been mixed in with anti-capitalism, anti-westernism so it’s found a naturally home in the modern progressive left and its simplistic oppressor-oppressed anti-western narrative. Add in millennia old anti-Semitism ( Jews seem to suffer from being successful enough to notice but so tiny in number most people don’t know any Jewish people, so they are easy to dehumanize) and you have a perfect storm for the our age’s hate movement : antiZionism.

What the ‘Gaza’ movement most certainly is not, is a human rights movement. As you point out yourself OP, there is no movement for genuine modern genocides such as Sudan ( in fact when Gillian Anderson tried talking about this she got hated on by the ‘pro-Palestinians’. ) and the inhumane reaction ever since Oct 7th where the pro-Pal movement has denied or tried to erase the sadistic atrocity against Israelies. Nor does the self-identified pro-Pal movement want to condemn the atrocities committed against Palestinians by Hamas, or condemn them for failing to protect their people in the underground city they built of hundreds of miles of tunnels in two layers. I could go on.

So to answer you question, the answer is not ‘why Gaza’ , as this movement is really an Israel hating movement. AntiZionism is a modern hate movement.

And yes, it’s the modern ages jew hate movement. It started off in anti-Judaism, so Jews were hated for their religion,, then when race theories took off in popularity ( race theory was popular and respectable amongst many in the intelligentsia) Jews were hated for their race ( anti-semitism was coined by an advocate of this race theory movement to mark himself as progressive as he did not hate Jews for their religion but for their race), now that political theories of the progressive left are popular, that is the form modern jew hatred takes, as the Jewish nation ( and all Jews by extension as we have seen in all the terrorism and harassment of a diaspora Jews) are hated for allegedly ‘transgressing’ the values of the progressive left, as I outlined above.

It’s really undeniable that antiZionism is the modern Jew hatred, there has been a direct ctrl-alt-select all word replacement of Jew for Zionist in the rhetoric and language. We’ve gone from ‘dirty jew’ to ‘dirty Zionist’ , ‘Jewish scum’ to ‘Zionist scum’, Jews control the media to Zionists control the media, Jews control governments to Zionists control governments. Jews kill babies to Zionists kill babies ( in no other war have I seen this narrative against one side, still less the side that the war was started against).

So the question is not why Gaza? it’s ’Why Israel/ why antiZionism? and this is the answer.

Jewish people are a tiny minority in the UK - about 0.5% of the population.

I said relatively large, ie much larger population that Iranian, Sudanese etc. And much more established, much more influential.

Bringemout · 11/10/2026 08:28

RedTagAlan · 11/10/2026 06:48

Quote "Israel is an ally, they prevented terror attacks originating from Iran that would have killed a lot of brits. "

Just as a matter of interest, do you have any evidence of this ? Any news links etc. I don't recall seeing this reported, but I might have missed it.

I know of the Iranian plots against Iranian dissidents in the UK that was reported by the UK Government.

kemi Badenoch touched on it by saying Israel had provided information which saved british lives, she said it was based on security briefings she was party to. The israelis have said they have provided information to the uk as well. Tom Tugendhat has also talked about it and he was in defence and is actually extremely knowledgeable about the middle east, one of the few MP’s that actually speaks arabic btw.

Relatively large Jewish populaton of this country? You imply that you're in the UK where, at the last census, just under 280,000 Jews were recorded. That's not large.

It's all political manipulation. There's no actual reason for any of us typical Brits with no family connection to Israel/Gaza/Palestine to have any especial interest. If you are very invested in it, you're being played. IMHO.

I said relatively large, meaning largest than the British population directly connected to Iran, Sudan etc.

There is definitely more media coverage. I don't think it's manipulation though. People are interested in Israel because we claim that they are a close ally, and we as a nation have always had close political and economic ties to the region, as well as being particularly interested since WWII.

I do think racism is involved, but not anti semitism. For me the question should be 'Why do we care about the conflict on the edge of Europe involving a western-ish country populated by quite fair skinned people, but not the one in Africa where black people live?'.

It’s ridiculous

It was a co-ordinated campaign targeting civilians, who fights back with gang rape and hammering nails into womens genitals, or tying a parent and child together and setting them on fire. Hamas are foul perverts. They aren’t nice to Palestinians, Sinwar held a commander he suspected of being gay for a year and tortured him to death, his nickname is the butcher of khan younis. Disgusting people.

16-18 year-olds are chronically online, and have been able to see the horror live streamed by the victims as it was happening. I think that's why this cause in particular resonates with the masses; they are learning about it in a raw and personal way rather than through the curated lens of the media.

I’ve seen stuff people have community noted as being from syria or yemen, someone was trying to use a child born with congenital defects as propaganda and they wouldn’t stop even after people repeatedly pointed out the child was Brazilian and their family wouldn’t appreciate it.

Thats the problems with social media, you can say anything and it doesn’t have to be true. There is footage which is absolutely 100% real and in Gaza and should make you feel awful for Palestinians, but theres also a lot of stuff which is just not true.

If the Jewish community was that influential we wouldn’t be losing the PR battle quite so badly!

In numbers (from Google) - There are around 350K Jews living in the UK, 5500 of them in Scotland. There are 150K Iranians in the UK, around 6000 of them in Scotland. There are 260K Ukrainians living in the UK, 30K of them in Scotland. I don’t think the sheer numbers of Jews are what’s keeping this top page news and a fashion statement for 3 years. There’s serious money behind all this - the posters and free keffiyeh handout stands and the refugee programmes and all the money funnelling from the Middle East into universities worldwide. It’s a bigger conversation than just the self righteous political science professors and little old ladies waving terrorist flags.

Most of the conflicts and issues in Africa can be traced back to the British colonial rule and decisions made during that period eg how countries like Nigeria where amalgamated together across tribes and religion etc. even if you look across to Asia and India Pakistan animosity, go research the history.

"The history of animosity between India and Pakistan is rooted in the 1947 partition of British India, which divided the subcontinent along religious lines to create a secular India with a Hindu majority and Pakistan as a homeland for Muslims."

The formation of Pakistan was done because Muslims wanted a separate homeland after the British left. It was rushed and botched, but the British couldn't have cared less about partition which was part of the problem.

So it's here say then. No arrests or anything. Nothing official put out. It's misinformation, unless it is verified.

So, people were removed from their land to make way for Muslims in Pakistan…?

Gosh, the hypocrisy…

One interview i saw at a pride parade summed it up for me (am paraphrasing as can't remember exact words)

Interviewer - so you are here for queer for palestine judging by your flag, can i ask why you are supporting them

Protester - poor gazans, evil israel, unfair fight etc

Interviewer - but as a gay man the only country in the middle east i have any rights is israel. In palestine it is illegal to be gay and as a gay person i would be put to death

Protestor - oh, is that true? Why are we supporting them then?

Obviously not otherwise there wouldn’t be political and security concern over that information stopping.

Don’t post the opposite misinformation instead.

I just don’t understand this. I know nothing about Jewish culture. I’m from a rural area in Wales, I don’t think I’ve ever even met a Jewish person to my knowledge, the only thing I have ever learned about Jewish history is via the national curriculum and WW2 which is of course abhorrent and caused nothing but sympathy and confusion from me. The very frank truth is I have no opinion of Jewish people, I don’t think about them, I don’t know anything about them, but what is happening in that region shocks me. I think what has happened in Gaza is awful, I don’t understand the politics but I also don’t understand why it’s “political” or “antisemitic” to be shocked by what is happening in Gaza with such little push back from the west? I was also of course shocked and horrified by October 7th. The whole thing seems to be an absolute cluster fuck, but I can’t help but repeatedly be shocked by the actions of Israel/Netanyu, surely no one thinks he’s a good person? I really, really don’t think I am anti Semitic in any way.

Same. I have lived most of my life completely unaware of people not liking Jews. It’s just not been on my radar at all. I have absolutely zero opinion on them other than they’re just people, like everyone else. I expect you’d find the same if you asked anyone else in around here (rural Herefordshire/wales).
