This is absolutely barbaric. Just when I thought Pete Hegseth/Trump etc couldn’t sink any lower.

At least he's been executed after legal due process has been followed

Great way to radicalise more people...

Sesma · 09/10/2026 11:29

Unless you are the US it’s not really for us to say, I’m sure the BBC won’t be showing it

In my opinion, anyone who chooses to watch anything as grotesque as this must be deeply disturbed, and extremely damaged if the sight of it doesn't affect them.

I wouldn’t say disturbed, more just morbid fascination.

FindingMeno · 09/10/2026 11:30

I'm in favour of the death penalty but that is fucking sick.

Would you choose to watch it? I witnessed an awful tragedy last year and still have flashbacks and a disturbed sleep 18 months later.

Westfacing · 09/10/2026 11:38

If you're worried about children seeing this, don't let them see it. Confiscate phones when it's scheduled to happen. Turn off the WiFi. Parent your children for an hour or so.

Like it's not going to be seen outside the live event - it will forever be on the internet and easily found!

KatiePricesKnickers · 09/10/2026 11:44

There will be nothing to see.
The cameras will be fixed ( no operators ).
The firing squad will be blurred.
The terrorist will be hooded. You’ll hear the shots, he’ll slump over and that will be that. Maybe they will show someone check he is dead.

elperil · 09/10/2026 11:47

No, no no.

It is vengeance with a capital V, and opium for the masses of so called "Christians" who rapture at an eye for an eye.

I will not set foot in the US until the regime changes and this sort of thing is banned completely.

The prisoner will be executed. That's more than enough. I am honestly without words. And we think that Middle Eastern states and others that have public executions are barbaric? Who is America trying to emulate here?

OtterlyAstounding · 09/10/2026 11:50

LizzieW1969 · 09/10/2026 11:14

She has a point, though, sadly. People are not as traumatised by watching live deaths as they should be. Watching public executions used to be commonplace in this country, and it still is in other parts of the world.

I was simply saying that seeing someone being actually shot on a video generally isn't as gory or dramatic as you see in films - it can be almost shockingly underwhelming in terms of how it looks. There's often very little to see. So I think for most people, the thing that's most upsetting is the understanding that an innocent person has been killed, not the visuals themselves.

I'm also not sure we should be saying people 'should' be traumatised by anything. Why are we wanting people to be traumatised?

Charles Dickens on watching a public hanging:

I believe that a sight so inconceivably awful as the wickedness and levity of the immense crowd collected at that execution this morning could be imagined by no man, and could be presented in no heathen land under the sun. The horrors of the gibbet and of the crime which brought the wretched murderers to it faded in my mind before the atrocious bearing, looks, and language of the assembled spectators. When I came upon the scene at midnight, the shrillness of the cries and howls that were raised from time to time, denoting that they came from a concourse of boys and girls already assembled in the best places, made my blood run cold. As the night went on, screeching, and laughing, and yelling in strong chorus of parodies on negro melodies, with substitutions of “Mrs. Manning” for “Susannah” and the like, were added to these. When the day dawned, thieves, low prostitutes, ruffians, and vagabonds of every kind, flocked on to the ground, with every variety of offensive and foul behaviour. Fightings, faintings, whistlings, imitations of Punch, brutal jokes, tumultuous demonstrations of indecent delight when swooning women were dragged out of the crowd by the police, with their dresses disordered, gave a new zest to the general entertainment. When the sun rose brightly— as it did— it gilded thousands upon thousands of upturned faces, so inexpressibly odious in their brutal mirth or callousness, that a man had cause to feel ashamed of the shape he wore, and to shrink from himself, as fashioned in the image of the Devil. When the two miserable creatures who attracted all this ghastly sight about them were turned quivering into the air, there was no more emotion, no more pity, no more thought that two immortal souls had gone to judgement, no more restraint in any of the previous obscenities, than if the name of Christ had never been heard in this world, and there were no belief among men but that they perished like the beasts.

I have seen, habitually, some of the worst sources of general contamination and corruption in this country, and I think there are not many phases of London life that could surprise me. I am solemnly convinced that nothing that ingenuity could devise to be done in this city, in the same compass of time, could work such ruin as one public execution, and I stand astounded and appalled by the wickedness it exhibits. I do not believe that any community can prosper where such a scene of horror and demoralization as was enacted this morning outside Horsemonger Lane Gaol is presented at the very doors of good citizens, and is passed by, unknown or forgotten. And when in our prayers and thanksgivings for the season we are humbly expressing before God our desire to remove the moral evils of the land, I would ask your readers to consider whether it is not a time to think of this one, and to root it out.

It’s sad because if they actually read the New Testament this attitude is clearly not in the spirit of Jesus’ teachings and the whole message of the NT about faith and redemption and mercy and forgiveness.

I know real Christians in America and they’re nothing like these ones.

There’s a reason why increasingly we are seeing cases of married pastors peddling hate and misogyny frequently being caught having sex a man or a child or just generally cheating on and beating or killing their wives or stealing from the church funds.

I don’t know what’s going on in their heart or head but I strongly suspect it’s because a lot of them are grifters who likely don’t believe in Christianity at all.

They could make interactive and let the viewing public vote go/no go with an online click reprieve/execute button.

I'm sorry, but that actually made me laugh grimly - it's not beyond belief with this shower.

MidnightPatrol · 09/10/2026 12:13

So this is obviously squarely in the ‘WTF’ camp.

But I suppose it’s a bit like those who injure / kill police getting worse sentences - they want to demonstrate the consequences to ‘traitors’ of attacking their own army?

So I sort of follow the logic, even if I don’t agree it’s right.

Human beings vary in their ability to feel empathy , just look at the world and you can see that so I don't think I judge anyone for not feeling sorry for a "bad" person being killed in front of them. That is part of the human condition, the desire for punishment and retribution along with the ability to show empathy and mercy are both human characteristics, though they usually exist in different people at different times.

What I would say though is if you watch enough state executions you will definitely eventually an innocent person executed, you might just not know about it at the time. I definitely do not want to do that, whether I know about it at the time or not.

For me the justice system is all about taking the extreme emotion out of our decisions around how to punish crimes . I don't trust that extreme emotion leads us to the correct course of acrion in most cases.

This means that I disagee with the death penalty in general since i believe it is usually driven by emotion than any evidence it wirks to deter crime. However I do understand many people trust their strong emotions to guide their actions more than I do and so genuinely believe the death penalty is a good thing. That definitely does not make them a psychopath in any way.

Televising it though, that really is all about appealing to our worst human impulses for retribution, punishment and revenge. Some people wont care, some will relish it. Probably the majority. I cant bring myself to care on a personal level but I know that pandering to that is really really bad for a society.

We need to strive to be better than our worst impulses and so whilst I dont care about this individual execution, I care deeply about being manipulated by the people in charge to give in to my worst impulses so I absolutely don't want it televised.

The killing should be done quietly, efficiently and without fanfare. He did some terrible things and justice is served ( for some people) by him being killed. Why does it need to be accompanied by anger and demonstrations of all our worst human impulses?

Don't blame everyone for what Americans do.

Please don’t blame Americans for what their government does either. I’m living in the US at the moment (admittedly a blue state) and people are desperate and appalled. #NotAllYanks

Aw I don’t blame all of them. I won’t go again until Trump goes but I used to adore my annual visits there. Last went to NYC in May 2025.

I came back from a 4 week trip to the U.S. in 2024 and a week later Trump was elected. I was heartbroken for my friends and many were furious at family members who voted Trump.

What is interesting is I particularly love folks in the South, my fave states in terms of the people are probably NC and Texas.

I haven’t asked the political views of all I encounter but I get along very well them at least on a surface level and find them very hospitable and charming. And for reference I’m a POC.

All my actual friends there voted for Kamala though so I do know my social circle there skews “left”.

It absolutely does make it worse. This isn’t about “not hiding” the death sentence being enacted. The intent from the government here is glorifying the death penalty, humiliating the convict and their family, and desensitising the population to violence. It’s the kind of thing that is one of those “small things” that make up the slippery slope to things like the Hunger Games or the Running Man in dystopian fiction. The death penalty is evil in itself, but broadcasting it like this is even worse.

The only people who tune in will be sickos and those who already support the death penalty. Anyone uncomfortable with it isn’t going to watch. The footage and the prior commentary on the broadcast will do everything it can to hype this up as justice or a good thing. So I totally disagree that “maybe people seeing this will change their minds about the death penalty”.

If it was part of a serious, planned “if the state will carry out this sentence, footage should be available for scrutiny by qualified independent parties in an audit capacity”, obviously that would be very different.

I agree with that, but

The problem for the rest of us is avoiding it. I was very grateful that people were warning to turn off the automatic live feeds on social media right after the Charlie Kirk assassination and the Minneapolis ICE murders. I don't know how people will be able to protect their teens and pre-teens.

It's full on right wing radicalisation.

Interesting re your friends in the South!

I have some pretty extreme fundamentalist Christian relatives in Texas, and even they didn’t vote for Trump. They are also very involved in refugee charities. People are complex.

Over on Reddit there are new videos every day of Russians being killed in Ukraine, often dying horrific deaths. On the history channel you can see people being executed by the Nazis.
So anyone who seeks out death is already watching those.
I can’t get excited over a mass murderer being executed live streamed or on tv.
It will be over in a couple of seconds.
Goodbye to bad rubbish.

And watching videos like that causes enormous psychological damage to the viewers. You can see some of the effects on PP on these threads, desensitized to the point that until very recently, their responses to witnessing violence would be seen as a probable sign of either PTSD or psychopathy. Now it's not only being normalized but applauded by some.
