This is absolutely barbaric. Just when I thought Pete Hegseth/Trump etc couldn’t sink any lower.

I’d been living under a rock, it seems. I’d never heard of this seagull shooting event.
However, I read your OP and immediately thought there’s no way the intended executee is white.

We complain about groups such as the Taliban and yet the the USA is slowly becoming a "Christian" version of them before our eyes.

I have no interest or desire to watch, but there will be plenty that will. If he’d killed or injured one of my loved ones, I may want to see him die and be glad if others watched it.

As someone who had a family member brutally killed - I would be more than happy to watch it. It's very easy to talk about human rights, society, etc until you are not the one who spent years with grief, nightmares and mental health issues.
Imagine if someone would torture your kids, mother, brother, etc. I'm pretty sure 99% would change their opinions.

Innocent people getting excited everyday in Gaza. The world has zero sympathy.

Nobody is saying he’s a good guy, it’s about live streaming executions for entertainment purposes and whether you think this is right or wrong.

I don't see why allowing people to witness an execution automatically makes it entertainment. Nobody is being forced to watch it. I also don't see why people who find it distasteful should get to decide whether others can see it. Having read what he did to that poor woman and her baby, I don't have any sympathy for him.

I was wondering how long it would be before someone shoehorned Gaza into the thread, despite this Islamist mass murder spree happening 17 years ago.

And the adverts…don’t forget those

For guns, obviously.

The damage is done to the watchers and the society in which they live - not to the watched.

This, revenge and shadenfreude are not the same as justice.
What does it do to people when they 'enjoy' another's death? Nothing good.

I was also watching live when Charlie Kirk died.

I also, back in 2020 (I think), caught the tail end of George Floyd's death being livestreamed.

Both were shocking (mostly because they were unexpected) and I thought about them a lot for days afterwards. But, as @SandSandwich says, I managed not to dissolve into a puddle of trauma, I just got on with life.

I'm pretty non-plussed about this announcement TBH. The GOP knows its audience and is playing to them a blinder with this. I actually think it won't happen in the end (the live streaming I mean) but the press release allows the GOP to posture and craft the type of image it wants for a while.

I don't think the perpetrator deserves any dignity or human rights so, in that sense, I couldn't give a shit if his execution is public.

If you're worried about children seeing this, don't let them see it. Confiscate phones when it's scheduled to happen. Turn off the WiFi. Parent your children for an hour or so.

There's a different between criminality and state sanctioned murder. One is, well, criminal, and should have repercussions. The other debases us as a society.

So you think this is a one and done thing. That it's live streamed once and gone forever? What about young teenaged boys? That's what we want modelled for them? That an elected Western government is on the same level as the most foul criminal?

I'd like to ask how low can they go but I guess we're going to find out.

You'd have to hope this was it but there are probably yet more depths to plumb that are unimaginable to anyone but this regime and its supporters.

Surely there can't be anything more to deflect from than we already have had during Trump's tenures?

KnickerlessParsons · 09/10/2026 07:53

ImmortalNowBabyDoll · 09/10/2026 00:31

That's really not the point. It's not about the perpetrator, it's about basic respect for human rights.

And what about the poor people who have to shoot him, and the camera crew, the producer, the commentator? And the people who have to clean up the mess after the shooting.

localnotail · 09/10/2026 08:04

Fucking hell. I can imagine how "tasteful" the whole thing will be, with idiotic interviews, opinion pieces and ads. Its grotesque and terrifying.

I have a lot of friends and family in the US, they all have young children - I'm really scared for those kids, growing up with this shit.

localnotail · 09/10/2026 08:12

SandSandwich · 09/10/2026 00:43

I could watch it and not be damaged and I’m sure I’m not the only one. I’m not particularly in favour of the death penalty, or live streaming it, but I wouldn’t be affected by seeing someone who had done so much harm, killed. If I had to choose, I’d probably say just keep him in prison for the rest of his life but I don’t care enough about someone who has done what he has to really be bothered.

Erm if you can see someone being killed and feel fine with it you are very damaged already. How many people have you seen being killed?

localnotail · 09/10/2026 08:15

KatiePricesKnickers · 09/10/2026 06:28

Over on Reddit there are new videos every day of Russians being killed in Ukraine, often dying horrific deaths. On the history channel you can see people being executed by the Nazis.
So anyone who seeks out death is already watching those.
I can’t get excited over a mass murderer being executed live streamed or on tv.
It will be over in a couple of seconds.
Goodbye to bad rubbish.

I get your point on death penalty but its strange you dont understand putting in on livestream is barbaric, backwards and grotesque. Civilized countries moved on from public execution (and from death penalty) for a reason.

I'm not sure why people keep thinking this is the case. Seeing a stranger die on screen usually isn't gory or dramatic - not compared to what you see in the films. It's shocking and can be upsetting, due to the circumstances of the person's death, but it's not the sort of thing that the average person will dwell on and be traumatised by.

PortiaRose · 09/10/2026 08:22

PickAChew · 08/10/2026 23:28

They'd probably put in a slight delay and beep out any swearing, though.

Too true! with close ups of the blood and slo mo highlights.

LoisQ · 09/10/2026 08:26

I definitely think he deserves to be executed.

Fortuity · 09/10/2026 08:36

FFS, why don't they go the whole hog and sell special knitting kits so people can knit as they watch. Maybe they could be MAGA hat kits. And take bets on how long the shot man will take to die. Even better, cut off his head and stick it on Golden Gate Bridge.

Are they actively trying to convince us that the US has regressed several centuries?

echt · 09/10/2026 08:37

Not RTFT but I wonder if they'll livestream Nidal Hasan's last words? Such a statement, in the execution chamber, is permitted in Texas, though the exact circumstances may not make it possible.
My guess is it will be on a delay and if he says something untoward, it will be censored.

The fact that he's in a wheelchair will be obscured because all such prisoners are shot sitting down. So that's cool.

Parent your children for a hour or so. This isn’t a one hour thing. The images and videos will be online forever. My dd is an adult now. I have no skin in the game here. But I’d be concerned for children and whet it may lead to in the future. And concerned at the message this is sending for future race relations.

LoisQ · 09/10/2026 08:56

Do people at least agree he deserves to be executed?
