This is absolutely barbaric. Just when I thought Pete Hegseth/Trump etc couldn’t sink any lower.

I think if people watch this they should be monitored and added to a watch list. Unless it’s a secret side mission to gather this data then I really don’t understand.

Over on Reddit there are new videos every day of Russians being killed in Ukraine, often dying horrific deaths. On the history channel you can see people being executed by the Nazis.
So anyone who seeks out death is already watching those.
I can’t get excited over a mass murderer being executed live streamed or on tv.
It will be over in a couple of seconds.

Still bloody barbaric though. I wouldn't put it past the Trump administration to make it pay-to-view, and make money out of it.

Does it desensitise? I accidentally watched someone live have a limb blown off so I no longer watch anything like that. If anything seeing that only made me more sensitive to suffering so I already know I shouldn't watch this.

I think many people especially Americans are already desensitised to brutality against non-white men. And this is all part of the conditioning.

There were some high profile police killings of white people that were heavily censored and cut so you couldn’t see the gory details.

I recall at the time that it stood out in contrast to the constant replaying of videos where Black men were murdered by police.

If my loved one was one of the people he’d killed, I don’t think I’d appreciate Hegseth turning the whole thing into a circus for the purpose of political points and dick waving.

I also don’t think “justice seen is justice served” means literally witnessed with your eyes. It means the system should be transparent, and open to public scrutiny, proceedings clearly documented, and verdicts and sentences clear.

Executions in America are witnessed. Everyone will know he’s dead, and why. The US has executed 30 people this year - do you think that the one they livestream will involve more justice than all the others, because it is more seen?

I was also watching live when Charlie Kirk died.

I also, back in 2020 (I think), caught the tail end of George Floyd's death being livestreamed.

Both were shocking (mostly because they were unexpected) and I thought about them a lot for days afterwards. But, as @SandSandwich says, I managed not to dissolve into a puddle of trauma, I just got on with life.

I'm pretty non-plussed about this announcement TBH. The GOP knows its audience and is playing to them a blinder with this. I actually think it won't happen in the end (the live streaming I mean) but the press release allows the GOP to posture and craft the type of image it wants for a while.

I don't think the perpetrator deserves any dignity or human rights so, in that sense, I couldn't give a shit if his execution is public.

If you're worried about children seeing this, don't let them see it. Confiscate phones when it's scheduled to happen. Turn off the WiFi. Parent your children for an hour or so.

I read in the BBC article that lawyers would apply for a stay of execution and the ensuing legal fight would last far, far longer than Trump's presidency (and probably his life).

So more words and bluster from a deranged man who is screaming down the hallway on his way out. I really hope America can recover from this and measures are put in place so it never happens again.

As an American, I think it’s abhorrent. I can’t imagine enduring another two years of a crazed lunatic Trump and his sycophants. There are large numbers of decent Americans who despair every day, so please don’t paint us all with the same brush.

When we were children, we watched Caucescu’s execution on TV. I’m sure I was below 10. My mother explained his crimes, we watched it and done. I’m not traumatised and never think of it. I remember thinking he got what he deserved. It didn’t feel different to me from
watching anyone being killed in films.
I find torture being portrayed a lot more traumatising on tv and can’t watch it. How can that be allowed to be shown?

The US government is broadcasting the execution of a human being for the sole purpose of entertainment.
That is horrific.

Firing squads are used very occasionally in America, often at the request of the person being executed. Sometimes that’s due to not wanting to be involved in a botched lethal injection, sometimes they say it’s for religious reasons (one man said it was because he was a Mormon - not sure what the relevance is but he was given the choice and that’s what he chose).

It's very telling that out of all the executions they have lined up, the Christian nationalist Hesgeth has chosen the Muslim's execution to be live streamed.

They want to drive further hate towards anyone not white and Christian. They have gone insane over there with their hatred. But then, these people genuinely believe that they need to continue to support Israel in order to ensure that Revelations happens.

It's 2026 and America is being ruled by fanatics that I thought had been resigned to history. We can send people into space and yet this superstitious nonsense still prevails. It's as though the Crusades never ended.

I was browsing YouTube when Christa Pike was due to be executed (I wasn’t actively searching for it) and saw a livestream that had around 1k viewers which quickly rose to 11k (it could have been higher numbers but I left) with the majority asking if they were live-streaming her execution. I thought they were just trolls but I guess someone saw this and thought it was a good idea.

I’m surprised it’s not going to be like “The Running Man” (Arnold Schwarzenegger) to be honest.

Nobody is saying he’s a good guy, it’s about live streaming executions for entertainment purposes and whether you think this is right or wrong.

Participation in executions makes the risk of psychological harm, including PTSD, very real. I can only imagine that the psychological toll on those active military personnel assigned to the firing squad will be greatly heightened by the fact their actions are watched by millions of people - even if those soldiers are volunteers. Trump/Hegseth probably thinks this means those soldiers are 'weak'; they are not - they are human, with human emotions and reactions. For this reason alone I would think this barbaric action should be rethought. But when you combine it with the likelihood of turning Hasan into a martyr for extremist groups, who may use the broadcast in their propaganda videos, this can only be seen as an incredibly short sighted choice. You would have to be very, very scared of your society to think that public executions are needed to qwell people into submission. It is an absolute indictment on where America is at the moment.

And she was only 21. Thirteen soldiers were killed and 32 more wounded, all because this man was an Islamic extremist. He said he did it to defend the Taliban. What a gem.

I don't think a televised execution is necessary, or beneficial to a society, but I'm confused as to why people should feel any empathy for him.
