Words and phrases that make you shudder

We all know MN hates the word 'moist' and the term 'picky bits' but what other words or phrases do you dislike?

The word flesh gives me the creeps.
<involuntary shudder>

Jumping on anything, a till , email etc.
Hi guys and just coming on here to say etc
🥱

"Do you want to jump on that?"
Which isn't actually a request, and translates as:
"This is the worst part of this project. It's the pits, with the most potential pitfalls. And I'm totally crap at this bit (in fact I'm totally crap at all of it) so I'm handing it to you. You have no skill at it either, and it's boring as well as difficult, but although I'm your equal in the stupid hierarchy, I've been here longer than you and your failure would please me. And I'm not even going to tell you where you might find a shovel."
RAGE!

This is such a funny thread lol I say most of these words hahaha I never knew people hated them except moist

tiredmummasita · 07/10/2026 22:06

i have one.. no two

’I can’t deal’
&
’I did a thing’

I hate it when there’s talk of someone battling cancer and when they win or lose their battle is described as won or lost.

i’ve had cancer. You are looked after by magnificent doctors, nurses and other allied professionals. They give you treatment and do all the heavy lifting. As the patient you are mostly terrified of having cancer, and you just feel your part is to plough through the treatment. I got better but at no point did I feel like I battled to get well. I took the treatment given to me by oncologists, they do the battling on your behalf.

When the say someone lost their battle with cancer,it sounds like they didn’t try hard enough.

No it isn't.

Yes it is. Very common in Essex and parts of east London. I grew up in Essex, I should know.

Fashion writers are fond of butter-soft leather, indicating high quality I assume!

Or fizz, and biccies.

MIL says (and writes) 'bix' for biscuits which gives me irrational levels of rage.

Greenandyellowday · 10/10/2026 12:13

Just remembered another food related one that makes me shudder. It was mentioned a lot on a recent thread about serving bread (or not) with lunch/dinner:

Mop up - gravy, for example.
"Serve with crusty bread to mop up the juices"
Cannot stand it! 😡

That is a regional dialect.

What really gets on my nerves:

Brits saying math, saying ass when they mean arse, and donut. It’s doughnut!

Oh, and ‘pissed’ when they mean pissed off! 🤬

SalviaCaradonna · 11/10/2026 12:12

I agree with whoever said "Any way, shape or form." Awful.

Or Choccies

Hot choccy
Posh choccies

Ewww yes! Choccies is even worse.

"Use your words" when speaking to an adult.

I’ve only ever come across this on MN - same as sundry other irritating expressions!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/10/2026 15:49

I shall have to brace myself for seeing it all over the place soon - GIFTING!

WTF happened to giving presents?

willowstar · 12/10/2026 17:41

showing up/showed up...as in...I always show up for my friends

Reach out. As in...I reached out to him last week.

I have had to tell Copilot to never ever use those phrases in interactions with me.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/10/2026 21:49

Obligated! I’ve just seen it twice on here!

Whatever happened to ‘obliged’?

SundayGirl86 · 12/10/2026 21:56

‘Gotten’ - it sets my teeth on edge.

Hotafternoon · 12/10/2026 21:59

Nailed it

Seen it a lot on here recently

DozyCrow · 12/10/2026 22:02

Haven't RTFT, so not sure if anyone has already said this...

When I see a post in FB about a theft/assault/some other crime, and it is accompanied by a photo of the perpetrators, there's always a bunch of people who will trot out the same old, boring comments..."looks like a doctor and an engineer", "same old suspects". They think they're being original and funny but they are so not.

GreatUserName · 12/10/2026 22:35

As in "First Post nailed it"?

Which has reminded me of "Sending you UnMumsnetty hugs" (think it's that)
😂
