Words and phrases that make you shudder

We all know MN hates the word 'moist' and the term 'picky bits' but what other words or phrases do you dislike?

The word flesh gives me the creeps.
<involuntary shudder>

"struggle with" from someone who's clearly making no effort at all.

Hotafternoon · 07/10/2026 15:08

Mumma

Also baby mumma or baby dad.

Palepinkish · 07/10/2026 15:11

Butt hurt - often read it here but have never heard it used elsewhere - horrible phrase!

GreatUserName · 07/10/2026 15:16

'Dropped' instead of released or launched.

Also, little man.

I don’t think Gen Z can be blamed for those words!

I kind of agree with you in some of those words..."Brunch" has been around for decades, but here is the i paper's photo on it, but note it's research by Premier Inn. The i paper is just reporting it, so...

Oneearringlost · 07/10/2026 15:29

Under review

Cunt
Poorly (as in she's really poorly - always said with a sad face)

chocolatestodgeandcustard · 07/10/2026 15:37

The liberal use and misuse of the word "literally". I've even seen "I literally died when she told me . . ."

Why are so many people now spelling the word "ridiculous" as "rediculous"? Also spelling "a lot" as "alot"? I've even seen academics on Twitter/X writing "alot".

"Pearl clutching" and "Are we back in the 50s?"

RainbowRiot · 07/10/2026 15:38

Dirty knickers it’s just 🤢

GreatUserName · 07/10/2026 15:38

Poorly (as in she's really poorly - always said with a sad face)

  • accompanied by the sympathetic head tilt?

And NOOK. What kind of awful word is nook? No idea of where it came from but it shouldn't exist or ever be used.

‘In no way, shape or form’.
Veggie
Artisanal, curated and sourced can get to hell.

Costa coffee mark their food as ‘veggie’. I thought it was a weird term for such a big company to use.

DearlyDiego · 07/10/2026 15:49

I think this is probably only a Glasgow/West of Scotland thing but "jamp"
"He jamp off the top step"
"She jamp on the bus in front of me"

My kids have been guilty of this and it makes me unreasonably annoyed. At least I can correct them. Sometimes some in work will say it and I have to bite my knuckles to quench the urge to scream "It's JUMPED you imbecile - there is no such word as "jamp!"

God that's another one...calling them Gen Zee. Ffs, it's Gen Zed. We pronounce it zed in Britain. Fine to say zee in America.
