Words and phrases that make you shudder

We all know MN hates the word 'moist' and the term 'picky bits' but what other words or phrases do you dislike?

The word flesh gives me the creeps.
<involuntary shudder>

Pregnant to
Portion up
Plate up
Baby momma
Baby daddy

Hubby, hubster
Little one(s)
Baby, instead of my/the baby
Plate up
Portion(s)

Ample portion(s)
Spread, for a meal or buffet
Meal
Buffet
Fry off, instead of fry or sautee
Also when cooking: chuck, bung, sling, glug (think I blame Jamie Oliver for these, though actually rather like him)
Veg, for vegetables
Washed down with
Cascade (to your teams)
Our (work) values (all seemingly picked at random)
Work-shopping (ideas)
On mumsnet: ect for etc, loose for lose, should of for should have, we/there was instead of we/there were, are instead of our, etc etc
I was sat/stood, instead of I was standing/sitting

Can you think of anymore? 😆

I had escaped 'buttery soft'... until now!

To do with breast feeding-
'Boobing' the baby to sleep

and I can barely bring myself to type this-
'Boob juice'

Just how old are these people who are having babies??

‘Explore’. 🤢

goingtotown · 06/10/2026 16:54

Obese.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 06/10/2026 17:00

Snack
And also all those wanky 'therapy speak' descriptions; 'he's an avoidant' for instance, when it's clear to everyone he's just a dick.

Snack! I'd forgotten that's one of my dislikes.

Jumping on anything, a till , email etc.
Hi guys and just coming on here to say etc
🥱

DozyCrow · 06/10/2026 17:49

I agree with hubby/hubster, babe, you do you, plate up, holibobs, curated, cheeky little..

I'll add...

Side boob
"We're" pregnant (no actually your bloke isn't pregnant)
Baby mumma
Need gone (on our local FB 'items for free' page)*
Screaming (it's overused and often someone was shouting or yelling, people don't often scream)

I also hate that everything is 'on' nowadays. On the weekend; on Easter; on Christmas. It always used to be 'at/at the' and it irrationally bothers me that it has changed.

Anything that advertises it’s “inspired by…” It’s meaningless. Tinned soup “inspired by chefs!” That doesn’t mean it’s good. Soap “inspired by nature “. I could be inspired by Van Gogh, but it doesn’t mean I can paint worth a damn.

BooksandSlippers · 06/10/2026 18:45

I find the word 'naice' excruciating.

Pepperlee · 06/10/2026 18:59

Reaching out
Making a difference

Excited (bloggers / influencers) such as going to collect their children from school, the next season ect

Especially when they say excited for when it's actually excited about. (You can't be excited FOR an inanimate object or concept, only on behalf of a person.)

I once had a colleague whose phrase about emails was 'can you ping me that?' After ten times a day I had to restrain my urge to lean across the desk and slap her.

ReflectiveGilet · 06/10/2026 19:31

On accident
invite god that grinds my gears so much

ReflectiveGilet · 06/10/2026 19:32

‘Tisms
’im a little bit ocd’. No you aren’t.

Pepperlee · 06/10/2026 21:02

Peckish
Brought instead of bought
Lend instead of borrow.

schnubbins · 06/10/2026 21:14

'I'm obsessed 'or even worse just 'obsessed '

'Space' being used instead of room

'Thoughts and prayers ' has become such an empty phrase it would probably be better to say nothing at all.

MachineBee · 06/10/2026 21:16

Furbabies
Making memories
We’re pregnant
Mute point (no - it’s a moot point).
Like - when used as punctuation

Thesummer · 06/10/2026 21:44

"piece of fruit" - I hate this phrase even though I don't know what the alternative should be. Can't explain why I hate it so much but I think it's similar reasons for why people hate words like portion or meal.

Tina46 · 06/10/2026 23:09

Just thought of another Mumsnet one.

'teacher here' or 'dentist here' at the start of a comment.

Myblueclematis · 07/10/2026 07:59

The word "super" in front of everything. Super excited, super pleased, super happy 🙄

Yupstillhere · 07/10/2026 10:30

Chocs.

Shudder!!

Oh that's reminded me of another one, also about fruit

'Chopped into' (cereal or muesli)
