Words and phrases that make you shudder

We all know MN hates the word 'moist' and the term 'picky bits' but what other words or phrases do you dislike?

The word flesh gives me the creeps.
<involuntary shudder>

”let’s get into it”
“it’s giving…”

Myblueclematis · 06/10/2026 08:29

A "cheeky" anything. 🙄

It just sounds idiotic to me.

TeapotClub · 06/10/2026 08:36

I’ve just seen two more that I’d forgotten,
starting a sentence with “Ahhh…” or ending one with “…eh”
It’s ok when you hear it but for some reason I hate reading it.

Everything being described as "cozy" at the moment.

Yeah, everything is described as cosy as soon as it turns to October.

Jijithecat · 06/10/2026 08:47

'Hidden gem' used in social media = a place that you used to enjoy and wasn't actually hidden but will now be ruined by hordes of people rushing to get there.
'Picky bits' it's on a sign over one of the aisles in a local supermarket. It almost puts me off going down that aisle because I cannot stand the term.

Cosy core! For the win!

Buttery soft , literally dying, obsessed, curated is used for everything these days even food , panties instead of knickers or pants and the last one “if that makes sense “ as though I’m a toddler that can’t understand simple instructions 😬

Poorly and bore off. They're just so twee and, well English-sounding to my Scottish ears. Don't know anyone who would say either of them (thankfully!).

I remember hearing the word poorly for the first time by my teacher when I was 6-7 and instantly hating it. I don't think it's used much though as I don't know anyone who uses it (or bore off,) and I'm in South London. Not sure if it's regional.

Yes - in the.NE when growing up poorly was common, except it was pronounced “poo-lee”. I stopped using that when someone laughed.

NNforthispost · 06/10/2026 11:27

I’d also add “pull for a chat”. We’re not on love island - we’re at work!

Referring to an unfaithful partner as having 'strayed' - frankly, if my significant other referred to me using words that conjure up a tethered goat I'd stray too.

Currently it's "flight delayed". Soon to have a favourite added to it of "compensation", which will totally change how I feel about them. 😁

Jellytotsburnmytongue · 06/10/2026 13:43

Yummy or tummy.

Tina46 · 06/10/2026 13:57

'Good shout' as in 'good idea'. I've lived away from England for 20 years, in the last 3ish years so many of my English friends say this. Is it a pop culture thing, is there a TV character that uses this?
