Christa Pike -where does she stand legally?

Just this really. Christ a is obviously being giving life saving treatment at hospital but where does she now stand legally. I suppose she probably has irreversible brain damage so will this not allow a second execution to take place? Is this a cruel and unusual punishment?

I guess anything is possible but that most certainly went wrong very very often.

Many States are already looking to bring back firing squad for exactly this reason. And ......it's cheaper.

Newsenmum · 01/10/2026 07:21

Can someone explain to me like Im five why they are giving her life saving treatment? I dont agree with execution at all but I also can’t understand why they are now trying to save her?

Personally feel like executions should focus on the serial pedo rapists that can’t be cured if anyone but hey ho.

I just can’t look at both these situations and think anything other than that she was awful for killing that poor girl it was horrific and also that it is awful the US government have tried to kill her also in a horrific way. If we believe killing is wrong then it’s wrong on all levels.

You may feel differently if someone murdered your family member.

I think after two injections that she was deemed to be alive, so it was considered that the injections had failed.

Gateappreciation · 01/10/2026 07:23

I wonder if this will have any implications for places like Dignitas, who I presume use similar drugs?

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 01/10/2026 07:23

there are some cases from the late Middle Ages and the Modern Era where people who survived executions were set free afterwards. Due to presumed godly intervention but (afaik) also due to the “logic” that the person was sentenced to be executed. If the execution was performed and the person still alive, the sentence was considered to have been enacted / fulfilled..

Anyhow. It seems like the state was given the right and duty to execute her (once) with two injections. That’s not the same as being allowed and required to try again or cause lasting injury. Is the state now liable? Is there a (renewed) duty of care? One would assume that to be the case, but I am not an American legal scholar…

thatwasclose · 01/10/2026 07:24

I thought if a lethal injection failed they were reprieved? Or is that different per state?

LoisGriffinskitchen · 01/10/2026 07:26

The DP is barbaric. I judge any country still using it. This woman was raped and abused from age 2, her brain was not matured and likely damaged as a result of her childhood, when she committed this appalling murder. She needed LWOP as she would likely never be safe in society.

The State imposed the DP on a brain damaged 18yr old (at time of offence) girl. That’s just as barbaric as the crime she committed. Let that sit with you for a bit and think about it. I’ve no doubt the more brutal of you don’t care. I do though and this is the ultimate in “two wrongs don’t make a right”.

IF she survives it’s likely she will have a brain even more damaged. Colleen Slemmer’s Mum doesn’t see justice, What a mess and it could have been avoided but parts of America are just beyond redemption.

I wonder how much life saving treatment is given and what the thoughts of the medical staff are? They are obviously trying to save a women for what reason?

The state has suspended executions for a year so if she does survive then she gets a bit more time?

I’d never heard of this case before https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-interactive/2026/sep/05/christa-pike-death-row-clemency-petition

Tennessee says child rapists deserve to die. Now it prepares to execute one of their victims

At 18, Christa Pike was sentenced to death for murder. What if the jury knew she had suffered years of sexual abuse as a child?

The medications are similar afaik.

the administration (ora vs lethal injection) and the medical supervision by actually qualified medical staff and doctors in the case of dignitas (who obviously aren’t allowed to participate in executions due to their medical oaths) are key differences however…

Dignitas I believe use medically qualified staff. I don’t think the death penalty lethal injection is given by qualified people

Christ, a pike! 🎣 😮

Can't find anything to confirm she was raped at 2. Keep reading it in here but wiki says 11.

Equally horrific of course - but let's aim to keep facts straight.

I think they should just get on with it and execute as quickly as possible. The girl she tortured, carved symbols into while still alive, and who's skull she smashed in and carried a piece of in her pocket afterwards is still dead. And will stay dead. No reprieve for her. No reprieve for her family. No reprieve for her murderer.

localnotail · 01/10/2026 07:29

Fucking sickening. US is so backwards, bloody hell. How are they any better in Iran, in this respect?

I agree the murder was horrific but state-approved murder is also horrific and should not exist in a civilized society.

Just read an article. It implied there is no protocol for a situation like this, ie if the patient survives. That’s pretty shocking as well.

Edited

I would imagine there is no protocol because if Im right medics dont legally get involved with executions, it goes against the hippocratic oath. So its botched quite a lot anyway as I understand. She wont be able to be denied treatment in hospital because she is being treated by proper medics there. So then back to prison to try again perhaps.

And I think availability of the drugs. Pharma companies are apparently too ethical to supply these drugs?

Dignitas are not executing people, they are not strapped to a trolley and killed by fuck knows who while still conscious. Its done by qualified doctors, including anaesthetists, and its a process rather than an act.

Absolutely but why dont the executioners use the same drugs then

Just as animals are peacefully put to sleep. Qualified professionals and the proper drugs are the key
