A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Anecdotal I know, but I am already seeing an increase in things out of stock in supermarkets or online (things I buy regularly so I notice).

Clearly supply chain issues are affecting some foods and drinks.

Fortunately I am married to a man who quite enjoys preparing for disasters 🤓

I have idly pooh poohed him in the past; now I'm glad he has been paying attention. Although I think I would prefer a zombie apocalypse to this slow descent into a third-world hellhole that we are currently experiencing.

Nuthatch26 · 07/10/2026 13:56

@justasking111 If thats how it is, make sure you only prep foods that he doesn't like. 😜
My dh is on board thankfully, but he thinks I'm insane on other matters on a regular basis.

Would he listen to Sir Richard Barrons? He was on Times saying that he has prepped food, water, radio etc, and he also owns a generator.

@RoseInAPot Yes I've noticed it too. Things missing or low stock, and I've had some strange subs.

We don't shop online so can't say I've missed anything. We do have a generator, gas BBQ. Have an oil lamp, loadsa candles. From our previous life in the Welsh hills where a storm could bring down all overhead cables. What he won't believe is cyber hacking, which I do. He says it's impossible.well M&S took months to recover. Why would energy, water etc be immune

My sons and wives have prepped tins, water, candles etc. DH doesn't know because it's not worth the argument.

I suspect he'll just go fishing he's water, gas and fuel on the boat.

How, do you know the Tories are back or serious again ? They, bring up Inheritance Tax, this being something that is now completely unchangeable. Due to the current , future and the rest of the UK's future the abolition of Inheritance Tax is completely un achievable ! Get real .. The only time it could have been done and should have been done was between 1979-1997 ! Every since them politically economically and socially it is a impossible policy to actually enact ! Kemi stop coming up with "Nonsense" ideas.

Nuthatch26 · 07/10/2026 14:26

@justasking111 Oh well, leave him to it then. I think you're just being sensible. He'll be grateful for your stash if the worst happens. At least you have peace of mind for you and your dc and gdc.

I went in the local Tesco at the weekend for some bits. They were low on tinned meat and bottled water. An old lady asked me if I could help her find tinned carrots but there wasn't any on the shelf.

And yet we just have Andrew Griffith calling Reform out for not sprouting "garbage" about abolishing Inheritance tax ! It is the Conservative Version of the Labour Party advocating for all Public Limited Companies to be taken in to State Control. Pathetic.. End of the Show type stuff been said at the 19 Conservative Party Conferences I attended Abolish Inheritance Tax Cue Roars from the Crowd!

Nuthatch26 · 07/10/2026 14:32

I haven't listened to Kemi's speech yet as still at work. My conservative WhatsApp group are full of praise though.

Yes I haven’t listened but the Telegraph is applauding it. I’m sure somewhere people are fizzing over it as it seems to lower taxes etc

I particularly like cutting NI for young people, it should all be focused on getting people working.

RoseInAPot · 07/10/2026 14:45

On inheritance tax (IIRC, I need to watch it back) she is planning on reducing Inheritance Tax by raising the threshold to £1m in addition to the value of the family home.

This tax was only supposed to affect the very wealthy but does now affect many 'ordinary' families, especially in areas of high house prices, thanks to the freezing of thresholds.

She said her 'ambition' is to abolish it altogether when it can be afforded.

ETA: very few estates pay it but that number has increased by over 25% in the last 5 years. It can also cause huge administrative problems and worries, as if there isn't enough to deal with after a bereavement.

  • Daren Whitaker – £0.8 billion, moved to Monaco in 2025. Monaco.
  • Chris Rokos – £3 billion, moved to Greece in 2026

Sorry, for some reason I can’t type above the list, only below. Anyway, the above lists the people who have left UK in recent years, removing substantial tax payments for the UK.
Presumably this government is happy to wave them goodbye……

redange · 07/10/2026 15:23

No I believe if you abolished Inheritance Tax , huge amounts of money would come back or be invested in the UK. It is just totally impossible with the atmosphere and propaganda given to the public. The other issue being Government Ministers having the same understanding of "Wealth" as the man in the street Pathetic ! Hence believing £10 Million is Super wealth ! Another way to get money back would be to say if you invest your £30 million pound fortune in a Business employing over 200 people say it becomes Non Taxable . It would bring so much money back from Monaco Switzerland Cayman isles and would give a huge boost to growth !

RoseInAPot · 07/10/2026 15:34

Too late to edit my post now, but ALSO from April 6, 2027, most unused pension funds and pension death benefits will be included in a deceased person's estate for Inheritance Tax (IHT) purposes.

This will bring a lot more estates into scope as almost every self employed/small business owner I know now has a SIPP (i.e. they have been sensible enough to save for their retirement!)

It's official my husband thinks I'm insane. He says there will be no power cuts I don't need to get cash, water, food etc. because it won't happen. Our infrastructure being hacked is a figment of KOOL AID dummies like me. Ditto the diesel shortage. He says Russia etc aren't capable of hacking water boards, the national grid, NHS, banks, supermarkets, etc. all my prepping just proves we're all brainwashed.

We've even had government pamphlets telling us what to do about rolling power cuts that doesn't cut any ice. I'm on my own here.

Tell me that the times, telegraph etc have given the same advice as every other news outlets

Well same here ! DH thinks it's all nonsense but apart from husband's how have been in the military and have done excellent prepping for power cuts etc it looks like most female posters are alone in getting " some bits in ".

Badbadlabs · 07/10/2026 16:06

Yes my store cupboard is building up a collection of bits - even if there isn’t a disaster inflation could soar again…I’m slightly worried it’s verging on horde…

Nuthatch26 · 07/10/2026 18:09

I've just listened to Kemi's speech. I really liked it. She struck a different tone to her usual, she sounded more serious and thoughtful but in a good way. She seems to be reaching out to former conservatives voters which is exactly what she needs to do. She touched on everything I care about.
I'm glad she pointed out all of the important issues that Burnham failed to mention in his speech.

Inflation is a big worry. Food will definitely go up. The way I see it, I'm buying what we would use anyway, but I'm buying it in advance. It's often cheaper to shop like that anyway, but definitely with high inflation coming down the tracks.

Yes, they will be very happy to see them go. Weird isn't it.

Hopefully people like those on your list will be willing to give Kemi a hearing after today's speech.

Parliament is back on Monday. Burnham will finally face some proper scrutiny - about time too. I haven't seen him rule out a coalition with the greens yet.

I was laughing at Andrew Neil earlier. Some have been praising Labour on the lack of budget leaks. He said there haven't been any budget leaks because Labour haven't a clue what to do about the economy so there's very little to leak.
