A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I was reading an interesting article on French debt and these two paragraphs stood out

To the extent that any ECB rescue of France is a fiscal bailout, it is a transfer of money by German, Dutch or Finnish taxpayers still working in their late 60s to more affluent French pensioners in their early 60s.

France and Germany both had public debt ratios near 60pc of GDP in 2007. It is what made monetary union viable. Today, Germany is still near 60pc while France has doubled to 120pc and is on its way to 140pc. That divergence of the EU’s two core economies is the widening structural crack in the euro edifice

You can see why they are in this position looking at posts on here. So many just won’t accept there’s no more to pay for this.

Elegant explanation - thank you!!!

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 07/10/2026 08:06

It’s eye-opening to see posters in the UK (and from France) defend street violence, arson and the rest in France, on the basis that not enough is spent on French schools.

The constant calls for ever more public spending have obviously become a sort of religious mantra that’s turned some people into weirdo fundamentalists who think violence and destruction is justified to get more out of the state.

These aren’t riots and protests by a starving impoverished Les Miserables underclass. They’re violent fun for teenagers who say the paint’s peeling in the classrooms.

Good morning.

Love to anyone who needs it on this horrible anniversary. 🕯

Labour have let our military down again.

Labour has shelved plans to spend £800m on urgently needed refurbishments to military housing as it struggles to balance the budget, The Times can disclose.

Thousands of families are now likely to be stuck in dilapidated homes with issues such as mould, damp, broken boilers and leaky roofs until at least the end of the decade.

An official review found that about 14,000 properties were in such poor condition that they needed knocking down or comprehensive floor-to-ceiling renovation.

Healey, who is now chancellor, won praise for his commitment to improving the lives of service personnel after unveiling the defence housing strategy last year.

Idk how politicians have convinced so many of that borrowing isn’t a household budget line and other easy get outs for them.

Look at Germany v France debt ratio, and we’re not far behind. Because enough people believe there’s endless funds and it doesn’t cost us, and our dc next, a huge whack to service debt.

Good morning love to everyone too and thinking of you

Binnyforthewin · 07/10/2026 08:37

How on earth can Healey need more time to work on defence spending. He resigned because he had completed a plan and it wasn't funded. Can't he just go back to the plan he already prepared?

He sacrificed his principles for a promotion. (If he ever had any principles that is).

I guess because he now has to work within parameters he said he couldn’t do when he wasn’t chancellor? As you say, he decided to take that role rather than recognise he couldn’t get the money which was needed and how much it fell short.

LuckyHazelFox · 07/10/2026 08:47

Morning everyone. Echoing love on this third anniversary. Hope you're doing OK @Nuthatch26

As ever, you could bet your bottom dollar on the poor housing being suffered by the soldier alone. Officers will remain well catered for, and god forbid the Brigadier looses his houseboy.

Rubydobydo · 07/10/2026 08:53

I missed last evening altogether, but my condolences Nuthatch.
It does get better but don’t fight your grief.

Colour me surprised.

Andy Burnham will delay publishing a review of the welfare system until after the budget in response to concerns about the cost of the overhaul and the optics of releasing it sooner.

Explain this to me, why it matters and needs to be delayed because of the budget? Sorry I'm a bit dim this morning, coming down with something I think so had a bad night.

The line I just saw on reading about it is the budget will be bad news, so will the welfare cuts so they want to wait to avoid a double hit of bad news.

Hedgerowmanager · 07/10/2026 09:22

The Guardian claims Healy will be giving away energy bill reductions to customers on benefits and he has earmarked £1 billion for that.

No surprise there.
An acquaintance on benefits (she claims them because she says that she ‘should’ in her early 60s be getting a pension and thinks I’m a mug for working) was crowing the other day that she is exempt from hosepipe ban because of her ‘benefits’ 😲😲
Energy costs reduction will score from her another vote for Liebour…

Agree with Eastern above.

Also, Burnham has already said that his answer to reducing the welfare bill is to spend more on those receiving them. They won't have the money in this budget to pay for Milburn's recommendations so they've kicked the can.

The proportion of UK residents "on benefits" could skew success for Labour in the next GE, whenever it happens. For those people voting for any party whose stated intention is to reduce the welfare bill would be like turkeys voting for Christmas.

Yep. Enough dependent on the state and it’s an easier win for the left.

We just get in loops of higher taxes, debt and welfare. France shows what happens when debt is too high to keep relying on it as the get out.

The more it drives away higher earners the higher the demands via other taxes.

It is likely to say that what Burnham has said he will do will cost a shed load of money, Burnham would look like a fool if he didn't then allocate the money the following week. If he releases the report after the budget he gets a whole year to talk about the wonderful thing we will do without having to actually do them.

justasking111 · 07/10/2026 13:43

It's official my husband thinks I'm insane. He says there will be no power cuts I don't need to get cash, water, food etc. because it won't happen. Our infrastructure being hacked is a figment of KOOL AID dummies like me. Ditto the diesel shortage. He says Russia etc aren't capable of hacking water boards, the national grid, NHS, banks, supermarkets, etc. all my prepping just proves we're all brainwashed.

We've even had government pamphlets telling us what to do about rolling power cuts that doesn't cut any ice. I'm on my own here.

Tell me that the times, telegraph etc have given the same advice as every other news outlets
