A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Yes some nostalgia at play. It’s not all roses by any means.

Burnham does seem particularly fond of nostalgia judging by some of his speeches

His nostalgia is often factually wrong and just rose tinted glasses but that doesn't seem to bother him and his fans

Someone was posting earlier about some bad shit idea that for tradesman fuel for the van was an option cost of running the business.

I know!😄

And whatever one thinks of the Man City situation, we will no longer get be seen as a “friendly” country by the UAE. Goodbye to billions in inward investment that will go elsewhere. Realpolitik

Hopefully, we will be seen as a country where the ‘Rule of Law’ is respected.

If you don’t have that …. then you don’t have the investment anyway.

If you think something can be taken away from you as it is politically convenient, then you go elsewhere.

We aren't really, though. The entire Gulf thinks we harbour terrorists and they're not far wrong.

Sunday, 18 April 2027 Is first round (second round two weeks later if one candidate doesn’t get more than 50%.
They were using lawfare to try to prevent her from standing, theory among some French people I know is that they are letting her stand because they think she will get fewer votes than if Jordan Bardella stood.

I imagine if the situation gets extreme enough there it will be academic whether she or Bardella stands.

Just hopping on to say hi

I’m not fully caught up

I have been ignoring politics and just enjoying the lovely weather and the fact that I’m in a really good mood (probably means something terrible is about to happen, this is usually what happens when I’m feeling very happy and contented).

I did hear about the Birmingham tapestry. I’m always a bit obsessed with PR. But really this is a stroke of genius. I’d love to know whose idea it was, but they’re crediting the whole comms team (understandably).

It’s been so well set up and obviously putting political journalists in it means that they will put it on social media… people are going to want selfies with the different sections…. It’s very easy for a party conference to fade into the background and just be really boring so whoever came up with this… it’s a master stroke. There will be a job waiting for them at a big agency if they don’t want to carry on working in politics.

Nuthatch26 · 05/10/2026 20:27

@SapphireCasino 👋

Glad you're in a good mood. 😁
I love the tapestry too. Genius.

Football is the most corrupt sport in the world. I can't imagine the world is particularly surprised that Man City were found to cheat.

Surely the reaction in most of the world would be just "well done, about time!"

SapphireCasino · 05/10/2026 20:36

The gulf think we're potty taking them in. There's a Sheikh who posts on Instagram occasionally. He just cannot comprehend why Europe are taking in murderer, thieves, rapists willingly.

Yes! And not banning the Muslim Brotherhood.

That too.

SersioulycanitgetWORSE · 05/10/2026 20:53

Re Muslim brotherhood I think it's because we don't understand it..the British Muslim council is also or was very hard leaning so if we get advice from them on these matters ....

Binnyforthewin · 05/10/2026 20:54

Someone has put an awful lot of effort into that Tapestry! I particularly like the continual mocking of Jennick, and the slimeball Simmons being stood on by Burnham.

I understand the Muslim Brotherhood very well.

That ‘they’re just being French’ is so typical on mn, as protestors riot and set fire to stuff. Such an mn view.

@SapphireCasino me too. I get nervous when life goes along too smoothly as I know there is something grim waiting in the wings.

Well there's the state opening of parliament if that doesn't depress you the budget problem will 🙈😁

strawberrybubblegum · 06/10/2026 09:23

Something about those protests doesn't sit right. Yes, French people are much more willing to protest than in the UK - it's almost romanticised by the middle classes, whereas here it's seen as 'not quite the done thing'.

In France, protests are seen as being about improving France. That's why it gets middle class approval - or at least acceptance - even when it's inconvenient. People tend to shrug and think 'fair enough'.

This destruction of schools, attacks on teachers, that horrifically casual use of a home made flame-thrower on a woman (although thankfully she didn't seem seriously hurt)... those don't fit.

Badbadlabs · 06/10/2026 09:35

I don’t get the French protests either - damaging property to improve it…as for the mums saying their teenagers shouldn’t have been hurt, maybe there was police overreach and that’ll be investigated but I’d have kept mine at home and not out there….

NancyThompson · 06/10/2026 09:47

If you're going to be basically violently rioting, looting and attacking people then yes the police may hurt you. We all make our choices.

CandidLurker · 06/10/2026 10:02

French society is very different than the UK. I remember when I went to live there thinking there’s only the channel between us but it’s so different. There was a thread started yesterday by someone who is actually a teacher there The French school system would horrify a lot of Brits. They are probably terrible on SEND. It’s very difficult to get rid of poor teachers in the UK but it’s impossible in France.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 06/10/2026 10:09

I can see that the genuinely poor and destitute who live in appalling conditions in the developing world might riot out of desperation to be heard, and destroy property in the process.

But French school kids? You’d have to be incredibly thick or malicious or both to condone this sort of nonsense and the inevitable, and unnecessary, misery caused. Like, for example, a teenager blowing off his own hand by picking up a stun grenade to throw it back at police.

But then the left doesn’t care. It’s all about the Marxist historical destiny. The little people are just fodder for the cause. But let us not forget how very virtuous the left is. 🙄
