A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

That's so devastating @Worrall20 . A lot of Iranians came to the UK over the last few decades to escape the regime. They enriched the UK with Iranian culture, which is ancient and amazing.

It's heartbreaking what's happening just now. Thinking of your friend and her family.

I don't know how we continue to offer refuge to Iranians who genuinely need it (and they really do!) without risking infiltration and domestic attacks by an enemy state. Yet another way in which the Asylum treaties were built for a completely different world, and no longer work.

I'm not sure Andy Burham gives 'game host' so much as 'evangelical preacher'. Angela Rayner too.

Kemi Badenoch has pledged to restore free childcare for higher earners.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/gift/72e310c0080159d9

She's such a breath of fresh air. She actually understands the consequences of the huge disincentives to work the UK has baked in, and is willing to take action.

It also inspires confidence that she mentions friends' children who are perfectly rationally deciding that the UK isn't the best place for them to build professional lives. I feel the same for DD - it worries me a lot.

The realisation that we're driving away our brightest young people should be seen as a national emergency. But none of the other parties seem to care.

My dear friend from school, years ago😀 married a very successful Iranian businessman and they had 2 beautiful very intelligent children. They divorced when he wanted to move back to Iran many years ago. Children are both Doctors now. Anyway she posted on Facebook about her 18 year old niece who had been caught at a demonstration about education for girls. She was also caught not covering her hair. She was treated to the most degrading treatment. We were all saying what can we do to help etc? Anyway few days ago she posted they had hung her, a beautiful 18 year old girl! Barbaric!

This is horrendous. I missed your post somehow.

I don’t understand why we in the UK aren’t more assertively behind the young people in Iran asking for freedom. I don’t mean sending in the troops, but just showing solidarity.

Everyone must be bereft. 😞 It is chilling.

It’s chilling isn’t it. The silence over it. @Worrall20I’m so sorry for those people.

It’s worth watching what’s going on with the Greens today. There’s been a lot of entryism from the left of Labour.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/10/2026 11:08

If the Greens imploded, which they might, the people pushing these agendas might come back to Labour

She needs to raise the tax thresholds and get money moving at the bottom

Even ten or twenty pounds a month extra does make a big difference.

It also helps with neets wages.

The fact that the present rulers overthrew a monarchy and an ancien regime was enough for the left and more than makes up for whatever the present gang of murderers does.

I think that’s definitely true for older ones, and I think the younger ones think Islamism is a righteous cause and it’s more attractive to them than say the rights of women, gay people or Jewish people. Some utter batshittery posted on that Greens thread I linked this morning (from Green Party fringe groups, not posters) about how “queerphobia” in Islamism is entirely due to colonialism 🤪

Yup. And Islamic Iran has always been against the US - ‘the great satan’. So the left in turn sides with Iran because they too hate the US as being the prime capitalist influence in the world. Democracy and human rights don’t matter when you’re fixated on how wicked capitalism is.

That left-wing tunnel vision and willingness to side with any despot who is their enemy’s enemy is very widespread, from the crazy fringes right through into Labour centrists. That’s why hatred of Israel and Jews is so strong throughout the left: they can’t shake off how much they despise the US, which of course has always supported Israel.

Yes it’s more about aligning to a religion or a left cause that’s anti-western. No matter the atrocities conducted, and they really are horrendous. The people are caught in it because any attempt to speak out lands in torture / execution.

The worst part is it’s often lovely young adults, the same age as some of our dc, who want change and suffer the worst. It’s unconscionable.

Oh Worrall! I wasn't ready for that last sentence. Absolutely horrific. 😢 A reminder of who the bad guys are.
I'm so sorry for your friend and her family. My heart breaks for the Iranian people.

Similar applies to China. Yes I know it has embraced capitalism, but it is very authoritarian and nominally communist.
There is evidently spying going on in universities, and industrial espionage all over the place, but the left dismiss this.
Imagine if Chilean students in UK had been spying for Pinochet.

Very happy to see the U turn on jury trials. 🥳

I hope Karl Turner feels vindicated. F you Lammy.

Lammy. Never has a Foreign Secretary or a Justice Secretary been so unmemorable.

I suppose we should be thankful that he’s passed into obscurity without trace, given the fiascos that could have happened on that twit’s watch.

My UK brother has lived in China since he married a Chinese woman, so thirty years. He taught at the university in Shanghai, she worked in international banking. They're both retired now. Live in a very exclusive area. Believe me our internet conversations and telephone calls are very carefully worded. We were asked to do this a long time ago, nothing has changed. They have a fabulous lifestyle in the countryside but within all the rules.

My son and girlfriend were in halls second year because of COVID restrictions. The other five rooms in their flat were Chinese students. They never stayed more than a couple of months. Never cleaned, washed up, spoke to them. They took over the common room on the ground floor, believe me no other students venturing into their space.

Son would phone housekeeping, hey there's a god awful mess in the kitchen here here student in flat x room x. They came in to clean no questions asked god knows where the students vanished to.

They never spoke a word of English that son heard. How on earth did the lecturers cope.

The good thing about them was they spent an absolute fortune in the city. Harvey Nichols and other upmarket stores did very well.

I saw something about the party taking a vote on whether Zionism is racism. Polanski won't be voting as he's on his campaign trail; what convenient timing. I can answer the vile party right now: no Zionism never was and never will be racism. Antisemitism, on the other hand ... now I wonder who exactly is pulling Polanski's strings. Hmm. As for Hannah Spencer, she called Reform trash, I'm going to wait and see how she votes. How dare they put Jews through this.

38thparallel · 04/10/2026 13:49

Justasking they only stayed at the university for a couple of months or the flat?
Re understanding lectures, a friend son is at the Royal College of Music and the large Chinese contingent are taught in Chinese.
