OK that's two comments about computers that have made me feel old. Really old.

I took O Level Computer Studies, there were 16 of us in the class with one, yes one computer, a Commadore pet.

It was also the only computer in the school.

Same here. We had one computer which was kept locked a small office just off the physics lab. Occasionally we would be allowed in to the room and watch the physics do things on it (can’t Romberg what) but we were never allowed to actually touch it ourselves. A select group of us went and did computer studies GCSE at the local tech. My Dad actually bought a BBC Basic computer for home although I think I used it as a glorified word processor (I remember writing up my final year dissertation on it).

I have a friend from university who now has a daughter the same age as we were when we met who is now off to uni herself. Especially poignant when the daughter looks like her mother did when we met 25 years ago. To me she seems so young and inexperienced although I don't remember feeling that way about myself at that age. So surreal.

We had a school BBC that was wheeled around on a big trolley

I sent my son a birthday card and a SAGA advert as he is now old enough to go on a SAGA holiday I don't feel old enough to go on one myself!!!

Speaking to a colleague recently about a local event that happened about 20 years ago - I mentioned that my school had closed for a couple of days afterwards because of the strain on emergency crews and he said 'oh, I don't remember having days off'. It dawned on me then that he was talking about being a student at the time whereas I was already a teacher in my early 30s. Up until then I'd never really considered there was a big age gap between us!

🙈

I had that when I was older than Shirley Valentine 😭

  1. When a student told me that their sister was asking if I was still working there! (On the bright side, the students think that I am much younger than I am, so I'm OK with that). Mind you, someone at work remembered seeing mullets and moustaches the first time around; I just asked, "Who let THAT out of the 1980's?!"
  2. When I went to my first live music event and thought, (1) it's too loud- TURN IT DOWN, and (2) "Lead singer looks like he could do with a good meal and a nap!" and a friend laughingly reassured me that I sounded more like someone's mum.
  3. When I thought that getting ducks and chickens would be the next logical step so that I stopped running out of eggs...

I'm in my thirties! Mind you, I suppose that it comes to us all. I would consult my grandparents on life during WW2 for my history homework when I was at school, and was astonished to find that they were born before Kit-Kats (the biscuit of choice at their house) were invented.

Went to look for new glasses the other day - the assistant called me 'Dear' and led me straight to the Sue Pollards... pure 'Whacky Granny' territory in pink and blue...

RosesAndHellebores · 26/09/2026 12:34

@Gribouille, the people in the bank have started calling me dear. I just call them dear back. The GP receptionists also call me Lovey nowadays. So when I go into the GP I call them "lovey" and get a trite "it's Dr Jones". I apologise and say with a tinkly laugh, "oh that's what your receptionists called me, so I thought it was customary here".

G5000 · 26/09/2026 12:35

just came from gym. Discussed with another guy that youth nowadays is so inconsiderate, not putting weights back, in our times...
Yup, we are the old farts complaining about the youngsters.

When I see a GP which is rare, I call them by their first name. They introduce themselves that way. They all look like sixth formers mind you.

@Barton10 Blondie were not the originals to sing The Tide is High. The original was in 1967 by John Holt and a band called The Paragons. I must be even older than you.....

And AK were produced/managed I think by the guy from OMD, those AK (and OMD) songs still sound great.

You lucky bugger. This was Boots... Thing is, I'm more Dark Academia - I always wear a classic brown tortoiseshell - she wasn't even looking at me, just knew I'd had a free eye test, having just turned 60... I bet she didn't show those to the 30 or 40 year-olds...

I have got a very good private one in my village. There are a couple of chain ones (franchises I think) too but they are staffed by children who treat me like I am both blind and stupid so they don't get my money. The opticians themselves were fine but the shop staff I found rude and dismissive.

Butler and Wilson have never gone out of style. I covet one of their original giant spiders and the one of glove shoulder brooches that Craig RH wears on strictly.

i have a lovely bright red Butler and Wilson spider brooch, when i am not wearing it I hook it onto a small flower vase

You’re very restrained. Anyone who calls me dear is swiftly informed I’m not their dear. Anyone who calls me lovely finds out very quickly how unlovely I am.

First happened to me when I was aged about 40 ( 20 + yrs ago) I was recruiting and managing Saturday / holiday staff aged from 15 in a large food place. I realised that I had clothes in my wardrobe older than they were.
More recently at the end of a busy week in work I enthusiastically exclaimed “It’s Friday, it’s five o’clock and it’s __ “ looking to my work colleague to finish it off, nope tumbleweed, I had to mutter Crackerjack quietly and slink off in dismay.

Louise2092 · 26/09/2026 19:03

Sitting at work just chatting shit with our small team (40,35,34,33,25,24 and 2 22 year olds) and one of the 22 year old pipes up and asks if we remember the millennium 🙃

The fact we could made us feel old enough but then they reminded us that them and 2 other colleagues weren't even born yet. Day ruined.

When I found out that Adam Ant's Prince Charming costume is in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Something from my childhood is in a museum...........

No not giant, but bigger than one in real life, in fact if i saw a real live one that big I'd be scared.! I got it in the Fulham Road shop a fair few years ago. Your owl sounds lovely. I have a few other B and W things i got from QVC but not had anything lately as I don't think the quality is what it used to be. I do have a lovely long sparkling feather shaped B and W brooch and a lovely set of skull things, brooch, necklace and earrings but i don't wear them all at the same time as i think its a bit of an overkill

I felt like that when I went to the David Bowie Is at the V and A and that was so long ago he was still alive. It was odd to see costumes that I remembered him wearing on TOTP and in concerts displayed as cultural artefacts. It was a brilliant exhibition though, he had such diverse and dazzling talents.

It's strange reading my mum's diary from when she was younger than I am now.
She left me her diaries and I find them comforting now she's no longer here.
It makes me feel old though as I remember her so well at that age.
