I think kids listen to music from all eras now whereas if you listened to anything earlier than the 1980s in the 1980s, you were square.

There's been a whole revival of certain retro songs based on (what I would call) computer games like Fallout or Vice City and especially Grand Theft Auto

The Andrews Sisters and the Ink Spots were ancient history when I was a teenager but they're turning up on fricking tiktoks and YouTube shorts now.

Having to explain to the youngsters at work that Atomic Kitten were not the originals to sing the Tide is High and that Blondie were - and then having to tell them who Blondie and Debbie Harry are!

My kids didn’t believe that I used to help sweep chimneys. My Dad had the kit and used to do it some weekends. He never advertised it was just word of mouth. It was mine and my brother’s job to hold the dust sheet in place with hands and feet. I would then run outside to check the brush was poking out the top. It was a horrible job and the dust still got up your nose. He didn’t pay us but we’d get to choose a video to watch from the video shop and some sweets. The old ladies were the best to sweep for, they always got the nice biscuits out and a fizzy drink if you were really lucky. This was in the 1980’s. 😄

I booted up my first computer, a Mac Classic II, to show the kids. They were amazed at its floppy drive, its monochrome screen and its leisurely pace ("it knows you've clicked on the icon, now you have to wait for it")

Asked them to guess how much memory it had. They tried to think of a plausibly low number. "One GB?"

Actually it was a whopping four MB

I purposefully bought some ridiculously priced fancy grapes so DDs could experience grape seeds!

lol travel to Poland, all grapes are seeded in the shops

I work with a range of age groups

About half of my colleagues are younger than my youngest child

My manager was working out what 'label' we all where by our ages

'Dolly!your gen x,so is my mum...'

Her mum is a year younger than I am

I volunteer to chat to a lady who's just turned 100. I always hope she'll talk about The Old Days as these memories are like gold dust now. But a lot of the time she's annoyed about the post and very much in the present. It is mournful for her though that so many of the common touchstones of stuff she could have spoken about are just gone from living memory

DD learned about the Tony Blair government for her History A level 😮

Yes mine did that same syllabus, she had left a text book on the dining table, very sobering to see what I can still remember vividly in a history text book.

IDontHateRainbows · 25/09/2026 10:33

Ive definitely started making an involuntary sort of sigh/ och noise when bending or sitting down. Where does it come from?

Saying to a colleague that someone reminded me of Scully from The X Files only to be met with a blank look and “what’s The X Files?” Horrifying.

Now that one hurts! At least you’ve got a chance to introduce them to a fabulous series.

Im straight but Gillian is so gorgeous, then and now. Ooft.

I saw a young chap in IKEA last weekend. Early 20s, shortish mullet, Yosser Hughes moustache, slightly baggy blue jumper with a horizontal stripe.

Thought I'd turned the wrong corner from Sofas and ended up in 1983 instead of Shelving.

🤣🤣🤣

Our first home computer was a dragon 32 in 1982 which had 32k of ram and you loaded stuff off a tape recorder. We chose it for its proper keyboard and because the Spectrum of the time only had 16k. Next one was a beeb micro followed by an Acorn electron and then an IBM PC. The Electron had an expansion unit with a floppy disc slot, our first computer to take floppy discs, which really were floppy 5.25 inches what a game changer!

Dance music song lyrics from 1993 - urban cookie collective. Often say it to my husband and vice versa! But we are of that vintage.

you pair of spring chickens!

My then crush, Rufus Sewell, playing King Mark in Tristan and Iseult, not the love interest. Tristan looked about 12 and entirely uninteresting to me.

My eldest dd said she hated The Bee Gees because they "ruined that Tragedy song" 🤣

Atomic Kitten will never be forgiven for destroying Eternal Flame, imo

DH and I are foodies and we went to a funky new restaurant in an achingly cool part of town filled with lovely young things.

We were seated on high stools at the pass. My lower back said “oof” but we ploughed on. Despite multiple attempts involving my varifocals, DH’s reading glasses, his phone flashlight and my camera used as a magnifying glass, we could not read a word of the fucking menu.

The lack of lumbar support had me popping Brufen all weekend and at the chiropractor first thing Monday.

Lifeomars · 25/09/2026 12:41

A young person telling me that they thought the Rolling Stones were a clothing firm that made really cool tshirts! At least he thought they were cool

As a fellow foodie, I feel your pain. I hate those high tables with stools. So much so that it has put me off a couple of very good restaurants that only have them as an option.

Im late 50s and hadn’t really thought of myself as particularly old until recently. I have a knee issue at the moment so have to use a stick on occasions. I go to my parents one night a week after work and take a shopping trolley to get them any shopping they need as it can be too heavy to carry. I was walking toward my office door and caught the reflection in the glass door of an old woman with a trolley and a walking stick! That’s when I wondered when I had got old!

SatinHeart · 25/09/2026 12:51

DS asked me what a VCR was yesterday. The bit that really got me is that he then didn't understand any of my attempts to explain it!
