What obvious adult discoveries made you feel a bit of a plonker?

What’s something you learnt as an adult that made you think that’s completely obvious and yet I have never considered that….i feel like a bit of a plonker?

Mine was when taking tablets, the more you drink with it the better it will dissolve. I think alot of tablets are testing with the assumption people will drink 250ml alongside it.

Not a daft thing not to know but an interesting thing to get to know:

In most kidney transplants, they leave the old kidney in there. They put the donor one in your lower pelvic region, pipe it up like a good'un and the useless one sort of shrivels up your back from lack of interest.

And, in these most wonderful modern times that we live in, the donor operation can be done by laproscopy, (or near enough.) Suck it out by the belly button.

So there.

Of course, not in all cases but I just thought I'd let you all know.

I learned from Mumsnet WELL into my 50s that I was putting my KS duvet into the cover the wrong way round. I had had a king sized bed for 30 years...

I always assumed that all beds are longer from headboard to foot and that therefore the duvet's shorter side snuggles up against the poppers/buttons.

No. Apparently not. On a ks (or superking) then you put the longer side of the duvet horizontally across the bed (snuggled up to the fasteners). Mind blown.

No wonder I always had a flappy bit of empty duvet cover and it didn't lie flat.

As a kid, I also confused the battles of Clodden and Flodden.

Chimley isn’t as bad as “nucular!”

I can't believe people don't know this. It's even written in the instruction booklet

Come on now....how many of us read instructions that in dept.... in fact how many read instructions (directed at mainly men)

AlliuminBloom · Yesterday 18:27

That chips/fries are just fried potatoe sticks. I thought they were mash with some sort of coating, a bit like croquettes. I had only ever seen them cooked from bags of frozen fries.

You don’t even need to read the instruction. It’s bleeding obvious. The thing spins - twist it and the cord can fall out. No adult should need to be told that.

I went to a RC convent primaty school so it was big on religion for up untill about 7 or 8 i got confused about why we "celebrated" the birth of baby jesus at xmas
But just a few months later we were " mouning " his death as a grown man.

It's one of the first things mentioned. I always make sure I read the instructions for anything I buy, saves so much time in the future

@Bargarran

Holland's a geographical region and former province of the Netherlands.

@Elsvieta

Holland is just one part of the Netherlands.

I wonder if @ERthree's mind is blown now? Grin (After being convinced Holland is actually a country when it's not.... like I was, until I discovered some 10 years ago, that it's not a country!)

.

Edited

Nope mind not blown at all. I stayed on the Dutch German border for years, i have photo's of me stood beside the Welkom Holland sign as a child. Yes Noord and Zuid Holland are provinces.

I'm one of those people who always reads instructions but I've had my car for 5 years and discovered only this summer that it's got heated seats! And I still don't know how to connect the Bluetooth stuff. Just today, I found a secret storage area I didn't know existed. Sometimes instruction booklets are just too long and complicated.

So are you saying that not only do you put the duvet in the cover the other way round to the obvious way, you also put it on the bed with the opening to the side?!

It doesn't help with the confusion re cows, though, when the name referring specifically to only one sex of the species is generally used as the overall word for both sexes.

Without using the non-everyday word 'bovine', if somebody asked what a bull was, you would probably say a male cow (so technically a male-female bovine!); but nobody would ever describe a cow as a female bull. Just like a bitch (although often avoided completely, because of its use as a slur to women) is 'a female dog' but nobody would ever say that a dog was a 'male bitch'. It's the same with ducks, peacocks and probably many more.

It would be much easier if all animals had commonly-used words like sheep (all of them), of which they're either ewes (females) or rams (males); but it seems that we prefer the confusion!

@BrezhnevsLuxuriantEyebrows

Ahem, but peacocks' other halves are peahens, so they do have two separate names...

She didn’t say that?

She was putting the duvet in the cover wrong, but it was lying on the bad “correctly” for the cover. Now she has figured out to spin the duvet 90 degrees, so it fits properly in the cover and then it lies on the bed same as always - buttons on the bottom.

She always had the buttons on the bottom (horizontally across the bed) but the duvet was the wrong way round inside the cover, so she had the long side of the duvet squashed vertically into the cover. And had flappy empty fabric at one side of the bed.

Yes that's right. 😁

I'm a plonker who shoved the duvet into the cover sideways on, then carefully aligned the fastener with the bottom of my bed...

A single, rather than a double plonker?

I was merely making a comment on instructions.

Often duvets have the filling sewn in horizontally so you don't end up with big lumps at one end or t'other, so you can use the orientation of the sewing to assist you

This is me.
It's dripping down my chin,sometimes slops onto my top..
No one else in my family.have this problem.
I think it's because I wet.the brush first(this is how I was shown by my.dad,i always rinse..kinda have too)
I also use an electric brush but move it.like I would a Manuel which i think creates more froth and spit

Haha..I don't add water. My boyfriend says this doesn't happen to anyone else ever. So, I'm glad you mentioned it 😂

The funniest conversation i ever had was my mum and i educating my nan on anal sex and blow jobs etc. 70 years old ans she'd had no idea!

My grandmother was very fond of the word bugger. As in bugger this, bugger that, stupid bugger; until one day DB lost patience and told her what she was saying.

She never used it again.

I am waiting for someone who can tell me how to use my cars cruise control. I have had car since 2016 but have only looked at instructions for Tyre pressure and Bluetooth.

I mainly drive town centre roads with 50 kph speed limits but I do do 2 hour trips on 120 roads.

This says that the correct way to put the duvet in the cover is to have the long side against the fasteners though? Which can't be right, surely

Oh yeah of course! 😆

Yes!! That's what happened. Popped it in and couldn't believe straight away. I was like WTH have they just given me? 😂. I didn't let on, as I quickly realised it was like alka seltzer and should have been dissolved. Felt a right wally!
