What obvious adult discoveries made you feel a bit of a plonker?

What’s something you learnt as an adult that made you think that’s completely obvious and yet I have never considered that….i feel like a bit of a plonker?

Mine was when taking tablets, the more you drink with it the better it will dissolve. I think alot of tablets are testing with the assumption people will drink 250ml alongside it.

I struggle to believe that you believe that. It's just not physically possible. I think you're having a laugh.

Why would you think he's having a laugh? You just believe everything you're told without question. You write what God has said is true off because that's what you're told to do. But if you actually looked in to everything you'd realise how wrong you are. The great flood was very real. Our seas are the remains of it. The land was submerged and all that is left are the highest points, our countries. God can do whatever He wants and does so countless times but you don't want to see it so you just don't. Once you realise how it all really works you can't unsee it. But laughing at people just because they've seen something you've missed is ridiculous. We're all only here to prove whether we're worthy of Heaven or not, by figuring out all these things. Our whole lives are tests in the test place that we can't enter without a woman and can't leave without death. Disbelieve if you wish because free will to choose has been given to you but don't laugh at anyone else who might see something you missed.

This one freaks me out! I had an ectopic and a tube removed and now I’m not even sure what’s happening anymore!

I had one Fallopian tube removed after an ectopic pregnancy and went on to have 3 children via the other tube. i thought my chances of conception would only be every other month, depending on whether the egg had been released on the same side as the remaining tube. Apparently that's not the case - one ObGyn explained that the fallopian tube kind of wafts around and is capable of picking up an egg released from either ovary!

Why did the chicken cross the road?
to get to the other side

I did not realise until someone pointed it out recently that other side = death.

Samesies. Thank you for this - I always just thought it was just a really poor joke.

Anything I know about early 80s society and politics I got from reading Adrian Mole.

Same, even though I was around then. We were watching the tv adaptation when 10 year old me announced to my dad that I thought Tony Benn would make a good prime minister. He retorted that I didn't know what I was talking about, but I still stand proudly by the same view!

That cows have to be pregnant in order to produce milk. No idea why it didn't occur to me before.

This is why there was such a surplus of calves that had to be slaughtered during the BSE crisis. Not producing calves was not considered an option for this reason, and clearly nobody was importing British veal.

Holland is a country. Brits call it Holland or The Netherlands. The Dutch call it Nederland.

Just looked this up! 'Holland' only refers to 2 of the provinces that make up the country The Netherlands.

Didn’t they ever blow up, when the contents/steam expanded past the capacity of the tin’s seal? 😃 The only person I know in RL who did this (other than tragic or awful longtime bachelor characters in novels) was a friend of my father’s, now in his 80s, who prided himself on ‘not knowing anything about cooking’ and did it when his wife was in hospital.

The reason I remember it is ( it’s probably 30 years ago) that not only did he blow up a can of soup once, he also once, on another occasion when his wife was visiting her sister, put an unopened tinned steak and kidney pie in the oven, and blew the door off the oven.

In a Michael Caine voice 🤣

I do it because I don't want any of the tablet to start to dissolve on my tongue & hit my taste buds. Paracetamol is very bitter - other tablets also taste foul to me.

I think that there is an ingredient in tablets and medicines to deliberately make the unpleasant taste to stop children eating them like sweets. Am I right?

There was no such flood. If you bothered to look into it using reliable sources, you would know that's nonsense. I am open to new information whereas you have closed your mind to anything that goes against your beliefs. It's laughable that you accused me of believing everything I'm told without question, when that is exactly what you are doing.

My father's uncle and his family were farmers so when our uncontrollable city dog "went to live with Uncle Jim so that she can run around in the fields" I totally believed it as an 8 year old.
It was only in my 30s that I realised that dogs going to live on farms frequently meant something less happy

I’m afraid I would have believed it still if you hadn’t rxolained.

Hiding head in shame as I type lol
But years ago I used to think that if you cut and pasted on your mobile using your finger , you must use the same finger to paste as it was somehow on your finger !
it took someone seeing me do this to realise!

Chickens are not all female, you’re thinking of hens! (All the posters who read that one!) Chickens that lay eggs are hens; chickens you eat can be either male or female. Male chickens are cockerels, but also chickens.

It’s posts like this that make you want to prescribe compulsory geology, palaeontology, oceanography and general science lessons for Biblical literalists. Plus a module on the history, composition, dating, authorship, textual variants, extant manuscripts etc of the Bible.

In one of my Anatomy and Physiology sessions I had about a 1/3 of the class insist that deoxygenated blood is blue and it is only when blood hits air it turns red.

I'd previously worked in cath labs and some sessions the cardiologist will take samples of blood from different parts of the heart.

But they knew better.

I hope it is just that for GCSE diagrams show deoxygenated blood as blue, but oxidation happens in the lungs not when blood meets air.

All human blood is red, lobsters are another thing.
