Today is the 25th anniversary of 9/11 do you remember what you were doing when you saw the news?

I remember every single bit of that day like it was yesterday. I had only visited the WTC 3 months earlier too. Thinking about the families and survivors and emergency workers today.

I was on my way to the supermarket and heard the initial crash on the radio. When I got back in the car it was clear that things had got a lot worse.

Just remember watching tv in horror.

Came in from school and saw the news.
Most people I know say the same.

Yes - I heard that a plane had crashed into the WTC on radio 4 and assumed it was some kind of light aircraft accident, then reports of another plane hit and I turned on the tv and watched in horror. I didn’t have much of a grasp of world politics at that point and I had to educate myself pretty fast to understand all the debates around it in the following days.

I was at work, we didn't have TV or radio so I only heard what happened from customers who had seen it.

Heard it on the radio in the car on the way home from school.

I was in my first job, popped down to the marketing department who has a TV and they were all watching the news when the rest of us didn't even know.

The change in mindset from 'what a terrible accident' to 'it was intentional' when you saw the second plane hit sent me reeling.

I was flying abroad and our plane was kept suspended above the airport for ages before we could land, nobody knew what was going on and it was late by the time we got to the hotel so it wasn’t until the next morning we came down and saw the news.

It’s mad to think how different it would be today with mobiles, 24 hour news and social media. At that time we didn’t even get the English newspapers until the following day so it was hard to get our heads around what had happened.

I thought the New York tribute was really clever and well done.

I was at school, someone put a TV on so we could watch the news.

Watched it at work. Colleague had popped in whilst on maternity leave with her baby girl. We had gathered in reception area to chat with her and it was on the tv and we all watched the towers fall 😔

My then BF worked in Canary Wharf and there were initial rumours that CW could be the next target

I was at an internal job interview with the insurance company I worked for at a Marriott hotel in Wales and I got through the first round of interviews and I popped to reception to call my husband. He told me to find a television as there had been a helicopter accident. I asked the lady behind the desk if she had a telly and she opened one in a cabinet behind her. There was a crowd standing there in shock with the receptionist trying to phone her friend who worked in WTC3 which was a 22 storey Marriott.

We were watching the live news when the second tower was hit. It didn’t seem real.

They cancelled the interviews as the stock market crashed so I ended up in a bar with the rest of the random people who were being interviewed watching the news in disbelief. What struck me was how silent the bar was!

I had visited NYC 4 months earlier and had been to the top of the WTC so I was horrified by the fact that I knew exactly how high those poor people were.

I was at home with dd1 and 2 who were 1 and 3. And an email group I was in sent out an alert going omg what's happening turn on the tv. I initially thought it could not be in the UK but did go to turn on the TV just in time to see the 2nd tower get hit. I called dh at that point he was at work and they had also just seen it.

Spent the day with the upstairs tv on to keep going up to see reports didnt want to scare dd1 and 2.

I was at work. My best friend ran in to my office and told me a plane had just crashed into the WTC and to go with him. We ran through to the bar (worked at a sailing school) and watched the TV, while watching the 2nd plane flew in.

The room gradually filled up and we all just stood and watched, couldn't believe it was real. I seem to remember one of the bosses going behind the bar.

I was 17 and working in Topshop. A woman ran in hysterical saying 2 planes had hit the world trade centre and then promptly ran out again. To be honest, we thought she might have been unwell but then it started to be mentioned more and more. It wasn't until I got home that evening that I saw the whole thing.

It honestly still seems so surreal now doesn't it?

I was at home alone on a day off, partner at work. I was listening to CDs while doing a big DIY project. My mum rang me and told me what was going on so I switched on the radio. We didn't have a tv at the time, which I was grateful for, I was on the underground the next day and can still vividly see the images on commuter's newspapers of the people who chose to jump. Their desperation still lives on in my memory.

I was 14. My sister was pregnant with my nephew due any day and was in lounge saying quick quick. I thought she was in labour.

Stays in my mind that day. My nephew born not long after passed in 2023 so its always a reflective day.

I think we will all remember that day :(

Working in a private equity firm in London sitting next to two guys who had joined in June from our related firm in the World Trade Centre. Was monitoring news as part of my work, initially it was coming in like an accident where only pilot had died in small plane then later went in red, had never seen news headlines go red. Both the colleagues had several friends die, the younger one the girls he knew die were only about 26. Our related firm they all got out as on a lower floor.

I was waiting for the bus home from college.

People were speaking about it, but I didn’t understand the gravity of it or what had actually happened until I got home and saw the news.

I thank the gods that mobile phones were not very advanced when it happened.
The horrors that people must have seen would have been so harrowing to see in real time on the internet.

I was in work when the news filtered through and then my DH phoned and asked who had declared war on the US. I went down to our canteen which was crowded with people watching the telly and we watched with horror as the second tower fell. My boss was out at a golf day and phoned me to see what was happening. I was so shocked I couldn’t talk to him properly. I couldn’t seem to form a coherent sentence.

Me and DH got home from work and spent the evening in tears glued to the coverage. It was unbelievable.

I was a lab technician and didn't have my own work PC for internet in those days so we all crowded round the bosses one who was also in the lab.

This, I was 12

Working in a UK city on the 22nd floor. I’d been around the building rolling out email to people for the first time. Network froze, ground to a halt so I went back to my area

internet had crashed due to everyone trying to use it. Walked back to half the floor listening to my mother on speaker phone giving everyone updates from sky news and the other half looking out the windows

we got sent home soon after

I was in my second day of a job at a hotel in Edinburgh, I was shadowing housekeeping, I heard the news on my cigarette break (not smoked for 15 years now!) and we went up to one of the rooms and put the TV on.

I was working in John Lewis in the TV department and saw the whole thing. It has been burnt into my memory. It was, and is, so devastating.

Later on we had a customer, an elderly lady, complaining that it would be on TV all night and she was annoyed Eastenders might be cancelled. I was appalled, and still, at her comment.

I was at work in a barristers' chambers. One of them came back from court saying there'd been a plane crash in America. When the scale became apparent we all went to the pub next door and watched it unfold on the TV. The place was silent, nobody could believe what they were seeing. Absolutely terrible.
