The best compliment you ever had.

Just to cheer myself up after reading a really sad thread.
Can you remember and tell us the best compliment you have ever been given?
Go on, blow your own trumpet, we dont do it often enough.

A man once stopped me in Whitechapel and told me I had the best legs in all London. (They were very nice then, less so now.)

When I was at uni my housemate had a very, very beautiful friend (she was a Calvin Klein model).

Housemate’s platonic male mate from sixth form came up to visit our uni city for few days and during that time she introduced him to both me and the model.

Housemate reported later that she’d said to him “I know she’s amazing but don’t go cracking on to Model Friend when we go out drinking tonight , she’s taken” (she had a bf at the time, as did I) and he’d replied “oh god no, WhatNext is much sexier - she’s fascinating, I could talk to her for hours”.

As someone who has never been particularly physically attractive, but get along in life through intelligence/wit, I was so delighted. Gave me SUCH an ego boost at a youngish age and reminded me to fuss much less about my looks.

He was quite hot too, so that was nice.

I've just had coffee with a former direct report who is now a peer. we've both been on mat leave since she worked for me and i disclosed that i was struggling with confidence in my current role. she said she couldn't say enough about the impact i had on her as a leader and line manager. "i talk about you all the time and you have shaped more than anyone else how i want to develop myself". i really needed to hear that! and it meant a lot from her.

The one that sticks most in my mind was on a work night out and one of the directors told me a have a perfect face. I’ve always been told by family and friends I have a beautiful face, but perfect was quite the compliment! That night was quite a wild one, we ended up back in the hotel bar which had a piano, I’ve played since being a child and have always been a singer. People at work know I play but there’s never been an opportunity to show them but that night I did and my director said he should fire me because I should be playing arenas, not stuck in his office and that he could listen to me forever. I think about that night often as I’ve secretly been harbouring a soft spot for him for years but would never cross that boundary.

When I was 13/14, a sixth former who was working the tuck shop told me I had the most amazing eyes he’d ever seen. Was probably just trying to get me to buy more sweets but it was an amazing boost for someone who felt particularly invisible at secondary school and really stuck with me (so much so I’m now repeating it on MN nearly 30 years later 😂)

I've been told that I'm doing a good job at raising wonderful children. Nothing has made me prouder.

This may not be the best, but a recent one. I was part of a team working on a project for work (there were three of us). A colleague emailed a group of people about the project and in it he said that our team was "part Mother Teresa and part Albert Einstein". I was pleased with that.

On my company leaving card, one of my colleagues, who I only knew to say hi to, wrote "to a glorious child of the seventies and a vanishing dream."

23yo me was dumbstruck. 😁

"You always feel like this little island of safety, when everyone else is a rough sea. I'm warm, and protected. It's like there's a thunderstorm outside and I'm wrapped up on the sofa watching it."

Unfortunately, the next words from her were "But you don't love me"

Which was true, and we broke up that night, but it's still the nicest compliment anyone's ever given me.

Someone told me I was the type of person he hoped his kids would turn out like

"You're a formidable woman" by an alpha male.

I was quite chuffed with that!

I can’t even bear to quote it but I was genuinely moved.

The fucker who said it is currently ghosting me.

Someone once said they thought I have integrity and strength of character. I a little surprised as I'd never thought of myself in that way but was very pleased that I come across like that

Someone once told me I was graceful.
As a very clumsy person who has been overweight most of my life I treasure that.

Someone once told me they could tell that I had a really good heart, and I still think of that as the best compliment I ever had.

I love these, every one of them is the sort of thing we would all love to hear.

One I had many moons ago, but I was young and I was so flattered. I worked part-time in a local picture house. A film was showing with the actress Claudia Cardinale.
The manager of the pictures was looking at the promotional stills from the film and he said I looked just like her, , and even better, his lovely wife agreed with him.

That gave me goose bumps actually

My son told me that sometimes he forgets that not everyone had an upbringing like his, with amazing parents who encouraged him in everything.

I can't think of a greater compliment.

That would warm your heart.

My son was hyperactive. One day I took him in a coffee shop, told him to sit still whilst I went to the counter to order us a drink.
I watched him all the time, and miraculously, for the first time, he did sit still and patiently wait.
As a lady was leaving the cafe, she came over and said how lovely it was to see such a well-behaved child, (he was three then)

I was honestly over the moon.

I had a similar comment. I was staying in a hotel with my 3 young kids, who could be a handful as they bicker. The hotel was a bargain break and much posher than I was expecting. Breakfast was loads of cutlery and glasses etc but my kids sat like angels pouring hot chocolate out of silver teapots and behaving so well. I was freaking out thinking this bubble will burst.
Then an older couple came up to me and said " what delightful, well mannered children you have! You should be so proud"

I was so proud of them. It made them feel so special too.

Omg we had the same experience and commented at the same time!!
It's so nice when people can say you're doing a good job, especially when kids can be hard work sometimes.

Out with a group of friends one night, someone said I was a cool person and others agreed. I loved that.

I’ve had a few people tell me I am warm and easy to talk to.

You had three kids so triple the pride.😄
