Watching with interest.

seaskysand · 05/09/2026 22:22

i heard once that Humanity is the Universe experiencing itself - this gives me a lot of joy in moments
when i am with my child and with nature and beauty of all kinds - that beyond the capitalist grind we are forced into and the hard times in life , it’s my “job” to find and experience pleasure and beauty.

“-humans do not stand apart from nature; we are an expression of the universe itself.

Active Awareness: When we create art, feel love, or study the stars, the universe is actively waking up and observing its own creation”

Sherararara · 05/09/2026 22:22

We just bloody do.

seaskysand · 05/09/2026 22:23

and this i have felt more and more strongly as i have aged and it is a great boon about life over 50

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/09/2026 22:23

Depends. If you're religious it's one answer. If you're talking about science it's all evolution.

IMO I like the Peanuts conversation. Lucy asks CB why we're here. He says to make others happy. She asks why they're here. He say to make us happy. She shouts SOMEONE'S NOT DOING THEIR JOB.

I try to make the world better. Works for me.

Batties · 05/09/2026 22:25

There’s no why, we just do. We are (to borrow a phrase from Bob Ross) a happy little accident.

TheImpOfThePerverse2026 · 05/09/2026 22:31

We're literally just tiny little dots on a huge planet. Look at that planet in relation to the universe, we're so insignificant.

Apsidistra · 05/09/2026 22:44

You exist because you chose to experience life in a human body. The real you is a soul, and before you were incarnated on Earth you chose the lessons you wanted to learn and the experiences you wanted to encounter in your physical lifetime here. After your human life ends you will return back to being a soul.

Nobody really knows. Even if they claim they do.

Very true.

Perplexed that you think we need a reason to exist. We're just animals on this planet. There is no purpose spiritually I don't think- anymore than a mouse or fly has purpose. We can fit into a purpose in an eco system I suppose, as a predator. Once you die , that's it . Like a squashed bug 🕷

We may actually be extraordinarily significant. We could be one of the rare places, perhaps even the only place, where the universe has produced conscious life, that means our existence is not insignificant at all.

Lleys · 05/09/2026 22:55

I love the ending of the Good Place series 🤞🏼

GreenShady · 05/09/2026 22:56

But if we are the only life in the universe, who are we significant to except ourselves?

WallaceinAnderland · 05/09/2026 22:58

Humans exist for the same reason every other living organism on the planet exists - to reproduce.

Our time as a species on earth will end. We are just part of the current eco system.

GentleSheep · 05/09/2026 22:59

You sound a little exasperated OP, any reason why you are asking tonight?

GreenShady · 05/09/2026 22:59

When I was about 11 I thought about this a lot - that all the things I did, thought about etc were so immensely insignificant against the scale of the universe - we are all microscopic specks and possibly nothing we do matters at all (I don’t see it that way now!). I think I freaked out my friends by talking about this though 🤣

ExistWHY · 05/09/2026 23:01

Whats the purpose of life, what is the purpose of MY life, not just life.

It just gets weirder lol.

A number of different purposes to life:
a) Spiritual view- to do good and make the world a better place than it was before you were born- "old men plant trees in whose shade they will never rest"
b) hedonistic view - have fun / enjoy life / you only live once etc
c) Evolutionist view - to create children and ensure that they are "better"
than you (better can be defined in many ways- healthier, fitter, richer, better looking, clever, more successful etc etc ).

Ronaldos · 05/09/2026 23:17

Don't know and you can't .

There is no more purpose to your life than there is to the sheep in the field. We are born, we exist, we die. That's it.

All species are driven to reproduce so if you do that too then you've perpetuated the existence of humans but eventually humans will become extinct.

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 05/09/2026 23:29

@ExistWHY , nature is magical really. Essentially we’ve all evolved as beings and each being exists to perpetuate their kind. It’s possible to view this as rather base and meaningless but I prefer to think of it as stunning and meaningful. I am a tiny but significant cog in a glorious and important mechanism. My seemingly insignificant moment will non the less leave its mark on our world.

cosycapybara · 05/09/2026 23:33

For me we exist in this life because we created the karma to, in the previous life.

We are conscious of it all though, that's rare if not unique
