Not sure if this makes a difference, but I am from Essex so have been bought up around imagine being quite important and I do love to look good, I was about 16 years old when TOWIE started so I have been bought up with that sort of lifestyle in a way, but I’m not to the extreme. I am still very natural looking, I’ve had 2 children and let myself go a little so I have decided I want to get back to how I used to be as I just feel so down about myself.

So currently I take mounjaro which I plan to only use until January, I no longer get my nails done as I prefer them looking natural now, I only get my hair done 3 times a year, I get Botox twice a year, I get nice makeup but I don’t wear a lot and use it rarely, I buy good hair products and I have just decided to get 1ml of lip filler to make them a bit plumper but this will only be once a year as I don’t like the fake look, I just like to look fresh and new! I don’t get any facials, I don’t spend on expensive face creams, I don’t wear designer, I get a lot of my clothes from vinted, body stuff etc, I don’t tan, I don’t have extensions either, apart from one time I tried them and they went horribly wrong, but working it all out I probably spend approx £200 a month on myself, probably a bit more at the minute because of the mounjaro which is temporary. My husband thinks this is outrageous and always comments on how much I spend, but I do work full time, I earn my own money but he is the main earner and earns very well but thinks I overspend.

The reason I am asking is because I am hoping others can say how much they spend each month on theirselves in hopes I’m not that bad!!! I get I don’t need Botox, don’t need lip filler, don’t need my hair done, but then I would just feel so unhappy in myself, and I enjoy pampering and I like to feel good!

Also not asking for judgement here as I know some people will just be dead against this. So just responses from those actually responding to what I have asked please. Thank you x

Probably £35 a month hair
£30 a month face and hair products inc makeup
£40 a month clothes - only really because I got fat and need new clothes each season, so I spend about £100 every few months.
i think I’m pretty low maintenance though, bordering on scruffy.
Dsis gets Botox and lip filler, extensions, nails once a fortnight, tans once a week, and uses a lot of makeup. She shops on vinted and always has new clothes. She always looks gorgeous, it’s just not my style or interest. MN is a bad place to ask (unless you’re a journo…) because most women seem really proud of using a soap bar on their face and a vintage brush in their hair and some sturdy clothes and boots they’ve had since the 80s

your dh obviously likes how you look though. So tell him to mind his business.

JacknDiane · 05/09/2026 10:16

Hardly anything really

RomeoRivers · 05/09/2026 10:17

I spend loads, but we can afford it. It comes out of my monthly budget… most of the time.

I have laser hair removal or waxing.
Haircut 3 x a year.
Nails: hands + feet.
Expensive skincare.
Expensive make up, but don’t need to buy anymore now because I’ve got everything.
Massages/ spa days.
Clothes.
Fake tan, expensive body cream, perfume, jewellery etc.

I tell DH he’s lucky I care about these things because it means he’s not going to end up with a frumpy old wife! Joking obviously, as he would still love me regardless, I’m just a bit vain 😂

Monty36 · 05/09/2026 10:17

I agree with a poster upthread, the difference is when you are going to work or not.
When you go to work, you buy and spend far more on ‘stuff’. Hair, clothes, bags, cosmetics. It is a sort of armour you have. You have look the part.

When you stop you no longer need to so much. You get a bit peeved at how much the hairdresser costs rather than ignoring it. Although if I still lived near the best hairdresser I have ever known I would actually pay more for her haircuts and colour. But she was a one off. And I don’t live near there now.
You use what you have more. And only buy what you need or run out of.

MindaBelinda · 05/09/2026 10:20

I cut my own hair and the only treatment I pay for is getting my eyebrows done. I don’t spend a huge amount on makeup up. I do spend about £40 a month on moisturiser and face wash and I spend quite a lot (don’t dare work it out) on collagen supplements and other vitamins and minerals, more for health than beauty but the collagen is taken in the hope it helps slightly with skin.

I look ok day to day but could do with making more effort for a night out.

RosesAndHellebores · 05/09/2026 10:22

@Biosblbay I worked it out. About £1500 on my hair - cut, colour and blowdry every 6/7 weeks, Estee skin care and make-up. Nothing else. Clothes probably a bit more if I include coats/shoes/bags. However, I'm 66, have earnt my own money for years, etc.

If I roll back to when I had a 1 and 4 year old, when I was about 39, I probably spent tuppence, No 7 sufficed occasionally and I had my hair cut and highlighted 2/3 times a year. DH never uttered a word and when I was in the depths of leggings and big jumpers, left a couple of hundred (which I could have spent anyway) on the table with almost a "FFS love, go and treat yourself to some new stuff". My biggest expense then was contact lenses.

It's interesting that you say you are on £100k between you in 2026 and have tinies. That puts you squarely in the tight spot, where there are no top ups and expenses are high. I can see that there probably isn't reasonably £200/250 available every month for spending on hair and beauty. Also, at your age you almost certainly don't need this stuff and probably look lovely, if not better without it.

Perhaps a household income and expenditure spreadsheet may be helpful to highlight what is left and ensure an equal split.

Totaldramallama · 05/09/2026 10:22

Hard to pin down per month, some months nothing some months more.

Hair cut and colour 2-3 times a year. A facial every few months which is more for relaxation and a treat than beauty. I replace make up when it's run out. Leg and bikini wax every few months, sometimes skip it over winter. I used natural jojoba oil for skin care which isn't expensive. I do have some face creams as well. I don't get my nails done. I think that's it.

Airconfan · 05/09/2026 10:25

I get my hair cut and highlighted maybe every 16 weeks which is about £90. I have some £10-20 day and night moisturers which last months. Hardly wear makeup but if I do buy it £20 every 6 months. I have had my nails done 3 times in my
whole life. I hardly buy new clothes / shoes….just said to my husband I’m a cheap deal!

Overall monthly cost maybe £20 😂😂

LadyJackSparrow19 · 05/09/2026 10:25

I spend loads 😬 Botox, weight loss injections, minoxidil pills from Hair and Me, Tretinoin from Dermatica, dental hygienist, a couple of pedicures in the summer, LVL lash lifts every few months, tear trough fillers every 5 years roughly. Don’t spend much on hair and nails but I like nice skincare and make up so spend a bit on those. It would easily average out to £200-300 per month probably and as I get older I will increase my spend on my face, micro needling or laser or whatever I think I need. I can afford it and don’t feel guilty. I’m happy to invest in myself and I save in other ways, don’t go out, drink or travel much now that I have kids so it has evened out.

Justaquestionplease · 05/09/2026 10:25

Get my eyebrows done every three weeks...£20

Hardly ever get my hair done...I prefer to do it myself...maybe a cut once a year..usually 50.

I have botox and lip filler...but occasionally

Weight loss jabs...200 a month

Clothes and make up ...between 50-100. Sometimes less, sometimes more.

WildFatball · 05/09/2026 10:28

I spend nothing on products other than £5 on a nice bar of soap when the old one runs out, £2 on deodorant and £1 on toothpaste. I spend £15 every 6-8 weeks on a haircut. So probably £14 a month overall not including clothes. If your £200 includes clothing then that sounds reasonable to me but I am not sure what on earth it has to do with your husband how you spend your own money anyway. Also I bet he would start complaining if you went round in joggers all day and never got your hair cut.

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 05/09/2026 10:29

I cut and colour my hair myself so maybe £5 a month on hair, a bit extra if I need some wax.

Wash my face in the shower with water and shower gel. I use Boots £1.50 moisturiser and rarely buy new makeup unless my eyeliner runs out, so maybe another £1.50 average on makeup per month.

clothes I tend to shop at TK Maxx or supermarkets. Might spend £200 in one go on 8-10 items and about £20 on a bra if I need one.

No tweakments, Botox etc at the age of 52. Always being told I look young for my age, many assumed my big birthday a couple of years ago was 40 not 50. I put it down to good genetics and being a bit fat, which helps pad out the wrinkles.

SwanUpmanship · 05/09/2026 10:30

I don't pay for any third party treatments - I trim/dye my own hair, can't bear anything on my nails and don't want to go down the route of botox etc. so it's hard to give a monthly figure as I buy products when they run out; or if there's something new I want to try.

I probably average about £30 a month on make-up/skin care if I consider what I buy across a year, and maybe £20 a month on hair products.

If you're counting fragrance that's another spend but even harder to calculate as I don't have one 'signature fragrance' - I vary it daily so individual perfumes can last me ages.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 05/09/2026 10:31

Hair twice a year, £40-50
L'Oréal shampoo and conditioner, £5 the two in Savers
No nails because I work in a kitchen
No treatments, I'm 45, I don't want them.
Superdrug vitamin E facial stuff, £5 for two, every two months ish
Superdrug retinol night cream thing, £7 ish every three months or thereabouts
No gym
Clothes, pretty much entirely Vinted and I don't usually go over a tenner per item although I did just spend £20 on a cardigan from Sainsbury's.
Rimmel and Maybelline for foundation, mascara, concealer, eyeshadow. Every six months or when they run out.

Sonolanona · 05/09/2026 10:33

Haircuts... 3 a year ..so around £50 a time (longish hair, no colour)
Oil of Olay with spf...about £5 a month maybe?
No nails/makeup...never could stand the feel of it, although I just bought my first nail file as I've finally stopped biting my nails after MANY years.
Clothes... I buy decent quality boots and shoes and wear them til they wear out. My wellies are probably my most expensive purchase in the last 3 years😂 (Le Chameau) as I live rurally and have a dog. Otherwise I live in jeans and simple shirts that last for years as I work for myself.

My most expensive outlay is probably my Squash membership and 3x weekly games.. (£100 a year for membership , £3 a game). That keeps me slim and active and reasonably fit, which matters a lot more to me than my ageing face and happily greying hair.

I think it's a lot easier to accept ageing when you haven't spent years and lots of money looking fabulous tbh... I'm happy as I am.
However if you are earning enough to pay the bills and spend lots of money on beauty products... then it's up to you not your dh! If money is tight or you have no savings... maybe reconsider!

EveryDayisFriday · 05/09/2026 10:34

Hair: roots and blowdry every 3 weeks £40, plus some highlights and trim 2x a year £70 = £750pa
Nails £35 every 4 weeks = £455
Bikini Wax £35 every 7 weeks = £260
Botox £120 2x a year = £240
Lash lift and brow wax and tint £40 every 8 weeks. £240
Mounjaro worked out at around £200pm = £2400
Gym £325pa
Average at peak spending (excluding clothes ) £390pm

I've lost the weight so no longer use mj and I now do my own nails so current av is £150pm, I'm happy with this.

Marellain · 05/09/2026 10:34

Haircut about three times a year, £75 a pop. Colour it myself.
skincare, idk, I use tret which is cheap, and then play with various serums and spf so… £150 a year I guess. My medik8 vit c is expensive , relatively.
make up… I love make up and buying bits and pieces is a real treat for me but tbh I don’t often buy other than drugstore prices. I think it’s about £200 a year.
So that’s about £600.
I tend to buy nice shampoo and conditioners. Another £200, probably. ( I’m very much guesstimating..)
As for clothes, I’m a Vinted addict and probably spend about £1500 a year on there.
So that’s only about £2300 a year. Round it up to 2.5k.

Lolalovesroses · 05/09/2026 10:37

I’d say about £300per month when averaged out.
Roots and hair trim every six weeks
1 item for my makeup kit every month £30 ( whatever I’ve run out of).
Botox twice a year.
An outfit for work ( generally from Zara or the supermarket) maybe every 2 months. I never wear designer or buy jewellery.
I get a spray tan about 4 times a year for special occasions.
1 nice dress a year, maybe some shoes per year.
Leg waxing 3 times a year.
Eyebrows properly done twice a year, generally do my own maintenance as they are quite thick so just need a bit of taming.
I don’t get my nails done.
I get 2 tubes of Obaji Tretinoin a year which comes to £300 per year.
£30 pm gym membership.
seems quite a lot when I write it down but I’ve always considered myself low maintenance……obviously not.

Hurryuphumphreygeorgeiswaiting · 05/09/2026 10:37

I felt the same as you op when my dc's were small. I felt I let my self go and put on alot of weight.
I joined slimmimg world and lost over all 4 and a half stone. I joined a gym and started using weights and use them at home when I cant get to the gym due to life being busy.
I grew my hair so I have my hair trimmed and highlighted every 12 weeks.
Botox 2 or 3 times a year.
Eyelashes. Every 3 weeks.
I invested in some nice shampoo, conditioner, hair mask but it lasts a few months.
Skin care. Cleaner, toner, moisturiser etc.
Nails are natural.
I use a moisturiser with fake tan.
I feel better about myself and I am in my mid-fifties. I lost the weight 8 years ago and have kept it off.

ClassActress · 05/09/2026 10:39

Not that you should be justifying your spending to your husband in the first place, but surely only answers from people on a similar income with similar age/ lifestyles would be relevant?
Where I live, Botox/ fillers and WLIs (unless prescribed for diabetes etc) are very rare so they’re not even on my radar.
I cut my own hair, trim own eyebrows etc. I’ve got cheap hair extensions. Do my own nails and hair removal. Use Simple cleanser, blue tin Nivea and Neutrogena face wash for skincare. Makeup every day. The cheapest brands like Catrice or Essence or Boots 17 range.
I love new clothes and shoes and bags, but they’ve got to be on sale or from Primark or whatever.
All of this is because we’re on one income atm/ cost of living/ prioritising stuff for dc, the house etc. But, If it wasn’t for that, I’d spend a lot more on myself. I don’t think any of that is particularly relevant to you and what you spend.

Mostunexpected · 05/09/2026 10:40

Probably about £50 a month if that. I only get my hair cut 3 times a year. I don't buy many new clothes, maybe £200 total a year. I replace my make-up as and when it runs out but my family tend to buy me nice skin and make-up products for my birthday which helps.

Bobbieiris · 05/09/2026 10:45

Ahh not that much, sorry OP! But I only work 22.5 hours a week and would definitely spend more if I were full time. I get my hair cut every few months (always leave it longer than I should!) , use a box dye (to try hide those greys!). Use makeup like rimmel or MUA or ELF, nothing fancy. Exercise at home (sporadically!) No gym. I have been awful with buying myself clothes of vinted so I've stopped that! I put 20 to 30 pounds aside a month for shopping for me and the kids.
Now if I did have the money I would definitely have my teeth straightened and have my hair coloured professionally. If you can afford it a d are sensible with your money then why not! Before I had kids I loved spending, used to get waxes, have my hair chemically straightened, spray tans....how i miss those days! It's all DIY for me now...

Motnight · 05/09/2026 10:45

About £300 per month. Not including WLI as I take those but consider that a health expense not a beauty one. I'm much older than you, Op . But my husband knows that what I choose to spend on myself is not his business.

Chilly80 · 05/09/2026 10:46

Doesn't matter what we spend. What does your husband spend on himself?
Gym membership?
Fancy car?
Fancy phone?
Barbers?
Hobbies?
Golf?

tinyspiny · 05/09/2026 10:46

Unless I buy clothes or some spf moiuriser nothing really . Im 60 , don’t wear makeup , have my hair cut when it annoys me which is 3 or 4 times a year , I’ve never had any kind of treatments or work done . The only skin product I use is the aforementioned spf moisturiser.
