Anyone seen the new trailer released yesterday? I’m so excited for Christmas, it looks amazing.

I come from the view of some things should not be remade. Hope OP you are not disappointed.

I won't be watching for that reason, even though I think JK Rowling has been treated disgracefully for standing up for women.

jay55 · 03/09/2026 20:36

It just felt like the film remade. It’ll be interesting to see how it’s paced for tv.

LittleBearPad · 03/09/2026 20:36

It looks fantastic.

It’s an odd decision to refuse to watch something because it’s being remade.

Yes I am looking forward to it, hoping I can pass the bad casting for Snape.

dolwop · 03/09/2026 21:09

I read the books pre-films and obviously they had to miss out a lot of details so I’m hoping it’s more true to the book.
i can’t believe the first film came out 25 years ago.

I’m really looking forward to it :)

It's a weird choice to have it look so dull! The first movie was so colourful. Also I wish they'd made the actor playing Snape pretty much anyone else. Lupin or Sirius. I love the Harry Potter universe but I don't know how excited I am for this.

I don't get this- the book is the original, that can't be remade, but the films only carried the main story, not all the other threads that were woven.

I can not wait. I love Hermione, I think her mannerisms are perfect

I do wish Maggie Smith and especially Alan Rickman roles were reprised. la la la refuse to accept reality

I am fascinated by how casting directors make their choices

Yes I’m hoping the tv show can include all the stuff that wasn’t in the films (I assume due to time).

I know it’s unfair to judge from a very short clip, but I didn’t find Snape menacing. Mean, yes. But not the undercurrent that Alan Rickman had where you could really believe that Snape would be Neville’s worst fear.
But I think it will be hard for all the actors to do it their own way, because the films were so well cast that it’s hard (for me at least!) to see anyone else in the roles.

Superhansrantowindsor · 03/09/2026 21:27

Never read the books - seen a few of the films but will watch this just because I love JKR.

Notonthestairs · 03/09/2026 21:31

I’m looking forward to it. We (mainly me tbh) rewatch all the films between Christmas and New Year but will fit this in too!

Bit surprised to check the original film was 152 minutes - I had thought it was shorter than that.

GameOfJones · 03/09/2026 21:33

I was pleasantly surprised by the trailer..... I think it looks fantastic and I agree Hermione seemed perfect.

I am hoping I get past the casting of Snape. I still do not get it given he is described as pale and sallow in the books but hopefully Paapa wins me round. Alan Rickman was utter perfection in that role so I'm not sure anyone could fill his shoes to be honest.

DD1 is 9 and just becoming interested in Harry Potter so I'm excited to see it through her eyes. Roll on Christmas!

FionnulaTheCooler · 03/09/2026 21:35

DD and I are looking forward to it. Snape aside, I hope the casting director has stayed more true to the source when it comes to James and Lily Potter, their actors were about 20 years too old in the films. I'm looking forward to seeing a lot of the details that were cut from the films, but I'm still salty that we never got to see the late Rik Mayall as Peeves, he was made for the part.

I think the age thing was maybe due to Alan Rickman.

Snape should be early 30s when Harry starts hogwarts, but once you’ve cast Rickman who was 55, all his classmates (James, Lily, Sirius, Lupin) have to be the same age.

ETA - obviously James and Lily wouldn’t be early 30s because they’re dead, but you have to have them dying at about 10 yrs younger than the others are.

Petunia is also miles too old in the films to be Lily’s younger sister.

GCAcademic · 03/09/2026 21:39

It doesn't look much different to the films, just possibly with better child actors.

I’m excited for it.

The child actors seem like they can act - I warmed to them straight away.

I feel like we are going to get a slight expansion of the world, with more POVs than just Harry, which makes sense.

Hopefully they will get the lighting/filters right.

As for Snape. He’s got the voice. I hope he’s book accurate in personality, at least. Petty, sarcastic and occasionally unhinged.

PearlsTeapot · 09/09/2026 17:19

I’m so glad they're going to be following the books and not the films, as there are so many little things that make the books so good. I'm excited to watch.

wheelhouse1717 · 09/09/2026 17:32

It’s funny how people have a problem with Snape’s casting this time when no one gave a toss that Alan Rickman was 20 years too old to play him.

I don’t know why anyone has a problem with it being remade either. A huge amount was left out of the originals.

daisyydaisyy · 09/09/2026 17:39

I’m really looking forward to it.

the only problem I had was with Snape, and that’s because of the marauders. But then I thought they may cast a person of colour as Sirius or Lupin to make it look less like a load of white guys bullying the only black kid. I think Papa will do a fantastic job anyway. I’ve been a lifelong hazpoz fan and I dont think I’ll stop now.

it’s also interesting that the story will be shown in other characters perspectives, there could be flashbacks, anything. I really am looking forward to watching it with my sister who’s only two years younger than me and just got into HP. she dragged us to London for her birthday specifically for Leavesden and it was amazing. We can’t wait to have our little sister nights with a buffet watching the new series!

kittenkipping · 09/09/2026 17:42

I seem to be almost alone in having utterly hated the films. After the second one if you hadn’t read the books they make no sense. I loved the books and the films simply left too much out/ adapted stuff that didn’t need it. So I’m really looking forward to the series.

Why! It’s really old now and they can go in to much more detail with a series. The special effects are dated in the films.

This! I can’t wait to see all of the missed details from the books. Ive seen it pointed out they are not really ‘remakes’ as it’s a series rather than movies- it’s another adaptation of the books.

JKR is an exec producer so I can’t see it wandering too far from her books. I hope it’s good because I loved the books.

Nincompoo · 09/09/2026 18:24

I just hope they include Hermione shrinking her teeth and Rita Skeeta as a beetle!
