Which tv theme tunes from your childhood/teens gives you the biggest waves of nostalgia?

I was a complete googleboxer as a child and teen back in the 80’s/90’s, I may be a bit biased as I grew up in those decades but imo the best tv shows came from that era.

I often find myself listening to my favourites on YouTube and they give such bittersweet memories. Memories of my happy childhood and watching tv in our living room because we only had one tv growing up. I also have such fond memories of watching a lot of these shows with my parents who are sadly now elderly and mum has advanced dementia so they often feel even more poignant these days.

Anyhow, this is my list:-

Shows my parents would watch and I’d hear from my bedroom at night wishing I could watch them too (we were allowed during holidays and weekends),

Hill Street Blues
M.A.S.H
Taxi
Dallas (we were allowed to watch this every week when it was on)
Bergerac (mum fancied John Nettles!)
Auf Weidersehen pet (dad’s favourite because he was in the building trade)
The Golden Girls (my mum’s, sisters and my favourite show, I still watch this on Disney)

Shows I watched with my sister,

CHiPs
The Fall Guy
Magnum PI
Murder She Wrote
Kate and Allie
The Wonder Years
Moonlighting (I feel deep nostalgia for this theme tune because it was the first ‘grown up’ show I was allowed to watch when I was 14 years old, on my little black and white portable tv in my bedroom)

There are dozens more but these are the ones that really pull on my heartstrings.

Which theme tunes are special to you?

Yes everyone would know someone at school/work who’d watched Dallas, I mean who shot JR made the BBC news!

And the excited anticipation of having to wait a whole week for the next episode. We just don't have that anymore with binge watching.

Couldn't agree more! I'm not a fan of binge watching, partly for that reason.

The original Van der Valk theme - Eye Level by the Simon Park Orchestra. Just fabulous!

As I recall, that actually got into the charts and was on Top of the Pops. And then Matt Monro (if I remember rightly) did a fairly disastrous cover of it with cheesy lyrics. 😬

I too have that tune etched in my brain forever lol!

It was just such a magical world, as a child 🥰 Have you ever watched any as an adult? I’m sure I was given a dvd by my daughter of it many years ago, I must have a look out for it at some point.

That’s so true. As much as I have an ever decreasing attention span, plus an absolute hatred of adverts, there is definitely something to be said about the way we used to watch tv. I don’t watch any live tv now, haven’t done for a few years, but I do stream a lot and do tend to binge watch things. And with that I actually find myself - often - unable to remember later on. I do miss when my daughter was younger, and even with my oh, and we’d have programmes we watched together, and enjoyed waiting for the next episode. There are still some where you have to watch at tv pace still, but I’ll often forget and then find that I’ll have a few episodes to binge anyway by the time I remember 😄

Oh, also the theme tune to Black Beauty! And now that has reminded me of the song Bright Eyes from Watership Down - that used to make me cry sometimes 😆
