Which tv theme tunes from your childhood/teens gives you the biggest waves of nostalgia?

I was a complete googleboxer as a child and teen back in the 80’s/90’s, I may be a bit biased as I grew up in those decades but imo the best tv shows came from that era.

I often find myself listening to my favourites on YouTube and they give such bittersweet memories. Memories of my happy childhood and watching tv in our living room because we only had one tv growing up. I also have such fond memories of watching a lot of these shows with my parents who are sadly now elderly and mum has advanced dementia so they often feel even more poignant these days.

Anyhow, this is my list:-

Shows my parents would watch and I’d hear from my bedroom at night wishing I could watch them too (we were allowed during holidays and weekends),

Hill Street Blues
M.A.S.H
Taxi
Dallas (we were allowed to watch this every week when it was on)
Bergerac (mum fancied John Nettles!)
Auf Weidersehen pet (dad’s favourite because he was in the building trade)
The Golden Girls (my mum’s, sisters and my favourite show, I still watch this on Disney)

Shows I watched with my sister,

CHiPs
The Fall Guy
Magnum PI
Murder She Wrote
Kate and Allie
The Wonder Years
Moonlighting (I feel deep nostalgia for this theme tune because it was the first ‘grown up’ show I was allowed to watch when I was 14 years old, on my little black and white portable tv in my bedroom)

There are dozens more but these are the ones that really pull on my heartstrings.

Which theme tunes are special to you?

Tots tv and play days

Loobylooisblue · 25/08/2026 00:52

Theme from 'Notts Landing'

maudelovesharold · 25/08/2026 00:54

The White Horses - I don’t remember anything about it, other than the theme tune!

The Odd Couple - the TV series with Jack Klugman and Tony Randall.

The Persuaders - Reminds me of cosy Saturday early evenings after going shopping with Mum. We all used to sit and watch it before having our tea.

White Horses

Loved that show

So many people seem to have memories of White Horses, totally takes me back to my childhood and happy times. I still listen to it on YouTube if I'm feeling nostalgic. I like the lyrics "When the day is born, we'll race to meet the dawn":
Also loved Follyfoot as a teenager., I read the Monica Dickens books which they were based on, but preferred the TV series.
Robinson Crusoe theme tune is very evocative.

InQuiresandplaceswheretheysing · 25/08/2026 05:12

The Archers theme tune, my dad always had it on.

Recklessismymiddlename · 25/08/2026 05:43

I think the reason we remember the 70/80s tv is there wasn’t much of it unlike now so we savoured it, IYSWIM. Now it’s all on a continuous loop.

Upstairs downstairs, The Waltons, Little House on the Prairie, are often on TV. Haven’t seen Dallas on for a while though, it was on a few years ago.

labtest57 · 25/08/2026 05:56

So many already mentioned but also Dick Turpin, Marmalade Atkins, The Lost Islands Little House on the Prairie, The Red Hand Gang, St Elsewhere...I'll be back to add more no doubt

Great thread, thanks OP.

Like many of you, my favourites have already been mentioned, so I won’t repeat them. But I mustn’t forget to add Wonder Woman, Hawaii Five-O, Charlie’s Angels and The Love Boat.❤️

That's so true and because there were only a few TV channels you could almost guarantee most people at school or work would have watched it so there was always something to talk about.

Oh yes, Dick Turpin, I loved anything with Richard O'Sullivan in it. Me and my Girl was a big favourite of mine too.

Howards Way, reminds me of living with my lovely Nan as a child.

Magnum PI intro and theme had an x-rated effect on me

Yes everyone would know someone at school/work who’d watched Dallas, I mean who shot JR made the BBC news!

Actnaturally · 25/08/2026 09:15

Reading previous posts, it’s the animal ones that got me. Do they even make tv shows like that now? Animal actors?

Littlest Hobo
Lassie
Black Beauty
Boomer
