What are the weirdest things you've seen when viewing a property?

In the middle of the living room was a boxed off area with a toilet inside.

WHAT??? That is totally mental. I guess you didn't stay long enough to find out why.

ImpracticalMagic · 16/08/2026 22:55

Took the kids with us to view a pretty cottage in a village. EA whispered that we couldn't take the kids into the separate reception room, so we went in one at a time... the vendor ran an online sex shop from home & used it as her warehouse. It was piled to the (high) ceiling with dildos, along every wall. You could barely walk into the room.

I saw a pair of pants soaking in a half eaten bowl.of Rice Krispies.

This one has really amused me.

A lovely little cottage with the only toilet in the house in the bedroom wardrobe.
There was no bathroom, bath or shower.
Another house that was painted bright yellow in every room inside and the whole of the outside.

Dogstar78 · 16/08/2026 23:08

When I was looking for my first house. I was on a viewing and walked into the living room, with a couple sat chain smoking. So you can imagine what the room looked like/ smelt like. There were also two parrots flying around the room.

I did my work experience with a surveyor. In one day, I visited a house with the sleeping teenager scenario. Then went to flat, where we discovered the occupant (who were long gone), had gone through the floorboards to to the jewelery shop below and robbed them.

AImportantMermaid · 16/08/2026 23:09

I once went to look at a house that belonged to a binman. It looked like he’d taken his work home with him. It’s was jammed full of rubbish and spelled of rubbish. It was absolutely disgusting.

Boiledbeetle · 16/08/2026 23:17

John Wayne commemorative plates on the wall and a bright pink leather sofa positioned so as to be able to fully appreciate the John Wayne plates.

When I made an offer on the house he declared my offer too high and insisted I pay less than I'd offered. I wasn't about to argue with him so said OK!

Thankfully he took the plates and sofa with him when he left.

A very old, quirky and small house. In the middle of the kitchen was a shower cubicle with a shower curtain running the whole way round it, hung from the ceiling. It was there as the plumbing and space was convenient apparently.

Oooh - we viewed another house about 15yrs ago with no upstairs bathroom but a downstairs loo and a piece of worktop you could lift off in the kitchen to reveal a tin bath!

Iftheskywasbkue · 16/08/2026 23:33

The family were sitting in the lounge watching TV during the viewing, and the mum (we assumed) was cooking dinner in the small kitchen so you couldn’t get in there to see it. Up in the loft room there was a young woman who was disabled and she lay on the bed staring into space. It all felt quite strange and sad and we wondered why a family member didn’t stay with her while all these strangers were coming into her room.

At another house viewing we were the first to go through the front door and the first room I looked in was the toilet in the main hallway which was filthy.

Cluelessfirstimer · 16/08/2026 23:46

Viewing a house which had tenants in. Fine not a problem. Was told at the door they would be on the house while viewing. OK, awkward but fine. We go in kitchen nice, living room nice! Good start. Noone in those rooms.

Go upstairs to the first bedroom and EA says there is a man in that bedroom
Ok, good to know.

Walk in and there is indeed a man in that room... laid on the bed half naked watching something on the TV. I mena just in his boxers.

I ran out with my child... EA said its okay you can look around there is a nice ensuite.. nah im good ive seen enough. DP to be fair went and had a look 😅

Was one of rhe most bizarre moments of my life. Mostly because the EA was so casual about it.

Didnt buy the house..

Traceyatnumber32isaloudgobshite · 16/08/2026 23:46

The occupiers fanjo. She was led on the sofa in a short nighty, no knickers and legs splayed/bent knees.

We pretended to be fascinated by the shit 1980s gas fire on the opposite wall.
Didn't buy the house but that was down to the tiny kitchen rather than the fully displayed genitalia.

dogs were kept in the kitchen and there was shot all over the floor! The sellers didn’t seem to think there was anything wrong with it! We made our exit very quickly

This reminds me of a house my husband and I went to view. Thankfully all dog excrement appeared outside the house but it was ALL over the garden. It was a massive garden and you couldn’t walk around it because of the mess. It was the seller herself showing us around her home and she just kept calling out ‘mind you don’t step in the shit’ cheerfully as we tried to view the garden. Even worse, before the viewing ended, her adult son and daughter and the daughter’s children arrived back in the house with a load of McDonalds food wearing their PYJAMAS. It was only about 6pm. They proceeded to start eating their McDonalds whilst their mum was still showing us around the house! We didn’t put in an offer.

Okay you win!

I once went to a probate house which had a huge chest freezer in a tiny bedroom upstairs. I didn't even understand why or how it was in there but it gave us the creeps.

JustAnotherWhinger · 16/08/2026 17:57

One we didn’t view but considered because of location had every room painted a neon green colour. Every single room.

We visited a bungalow in Wales where the outside walls were painted bright pink - and the inside ones - and the patio. And all the curtains, upholstery, cupboards, wardrobes etc. were pink.

BeachHairForLife · 17/08/2026 00:35

A ghost! Looked at a really old cottage at an open house a few years ago with a friend of mine and we were checking out the upstairs rooms and walked past a man in one room, said hello but he didn't answer. When we got downstairs we were chatting to the estate agent and he said as we were the last ones he'd leave after us and lock up. We said there's still a guy upstairs. He went up and checked everywhere, opened cupboards and everything but no sign of this man and we'd been right at the bottom of the stairs the whole time. I put up a fight for that house and lost. My now house is all boring and not haunted.
Edit: spelling

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 17/08/2026 00:54

The whole house was decorated in a Dr Who theme, right down to the shower curtain in the bathroom, and there was an impressive collection of memorabilia including a life-sized dalek. DP commented on the owner's liking of Dr Who and the estate agent said drily, "I hadn't really noticed". 😆

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 17/08/2026 01:10

Also, a flat in which you could move between two rooms by passing through the wardrobe. Apparently this was to help people escape in the event of a fire. Our DC loved this and went round and round, which was OK as the flat was empty.

We viewed a nice house, shown round by the owner. He pointed out a beam in the garage ceiling and told us that was the place one of his relatives had hung themselves from.

this is the most bizarre example so far!

PantsinRiceKrispies · 17/08/2026 08:57

Nothing to add, but just wanted to thank whoever it was for the new username! It is sung to the tune of Knights in White Satin and I have it on a loop in my head now.

Periperi2025 · 17/08/2026 09:04

This one with a cantilevered extension bedroom off the back....?????

I would have definetly wanted a full structural survey on that one if we'd been interested.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 17/08/2026 09:12

Nothing excessively bizarre as the above, but the owner showed us round the standard London Victorian semi that he'd "lovingly restored".
Every wall surface was covered with either painted woodchip wallpaper, faux wood panelling or cork tiles. He "wanted to highlight the original plasterwork" so all the details in the coving and ceiling roses were picked out in chocolate brown paint.
He was most apologetic that he would be taking the massive chandelier made from a wooden wagon wheel.
We bought another house that was even worse...

kiwiane · 17/08/2026 09:14

A man in bed! He got up as we entered and left the room without a word.
