What are the weirdest things you've seen when viewing a property?

dogs were kept in the kitchen and there was shot all over the floor! The sellers didn’t seem to think there was anything wrong with it! We made our exit very quickly

SaraHoliday · 16/08/2026 17:47

Every room in the house had samurai swords displayed on the walls. Every single room.

Yep! I bought that house! 😂

I viewed a property where the occupants were divorcing. She had torn up all of his clothes and broken all of his belongings - but stored them in the garage as she said she wasn't legally allowed to dispose of them and he was refusing to collect them...

I decided that one wasn't a 'happy house'...

A floor to ceiling stack of unread newspapers.

I didn't ask.

We were shown into a bedroom that was painted all black even the ceiling and had a teenage boy sleeping in the bed.

That was unexpected.

JustAnotherWhinger · 16/08/2026 17:56

One house we viewed last year had life size cardboard cutouts all over the place.

Take That. Boyzone. Freddie mercury. Various sports people. And the King.

Was highly amusing but quite bizarre

JustAnotherWhinger · 16/08/2026 17:57

One we didn’t view but considered because of location had every room painted a neon green colour. Every single room.

We looked at a large, beautiful house. It was currently being rented by a couple who, we later learnt, didn't want the owners to sell it.
They were doctors, their certificates were on the office wall. Slinky underwear was draped all over the place, sex toys were on the bedroom side-tables, and each toilet contained a large shit.
In the end, we didn't buy it as it was too pricey, but it was very clear that the couple were trying to put us off. It was odd.

A lady told me that there was a ghostly spirit in the back bedroom and that she often heard the cries of a baby coming from the room....

(One of the few times I have had no words...)

They might have been planning on opening a Fish and Chip shop.

Hand cuffs on the bed head
Dismantled motor cycle in a bedroom
Sex toys sitting in the shower
3 separate houses !!

PeonyBulb · 16/08/2026 18:04

In the middle of the living room was a boxed off area with a toilet inside.

I took my Mum with me to see a house, it was a probate property and the son was showing us round his mother’s house. It wasn’t too bad it needed a bit of love but it was a good size, big rooms and was potentially quite lovely.

Then we walked into the garden we noticed what looked like a gravestone in a flower bed near the house. So we walked over because there was no missing it, and it was a full on black gravestone with gold lettering and a photo of the deceased. Turns out it was his Dad!

I had no idea what to say, but my Mum piped up ‘are you taking him with you?’ 😂😂😂

We did not do a second viewing!

OP has given several examples already.

We viewed a nice house, shown round by the owner. He pointed out a beam in the garage ceiling and told us that was the place one of his relatives had hung themselves from.

This is why Estate Agents should do viewings 😬

KrazyKatty · 16/08/2026 18:29

A donkey stood in the hallway. He was cute but we decided not to offer on that property.

Sasha07 · 16/08/2026 18:32

Bath in the bedroom. This wasn't a big, fancy house. Just like a normal, council house style set up. The thought of having a steamy bath in a bedroom just doesn't sit right. Especially when the view from that window looked out on to a petrol station 😬

Gardenisablooming · 16/08/2026 18:36

Just a rental buy there was a teenager boy still in bed.
And a 5 bed house but we weren't allowed to have 4 dc to live in it.

luckylavender · 16/08/2026 18:54

When I was looking for somewhere in London. I was in my early 20s and viewed a flat owned by a single bloke with one room to rent. All the ceilings were mirrored. It really gave me the creeps.

Zebracat · 16/08/2026 18:55

We viewed a house that had a tiny toilet room on the stairs half landing. Impossible to see how it could be safe or legal. And the loft bedroom could only be accessed by crawling through a 4 ft tunnel. The whole house was weird, and felt cold and scary. The estate agent told us she hated doing viewings.
Saw one on RightMove recently that has a kangaroo skin pinned up above the master bed - in Lincolnshire, can’t remember where.

There was another, years ago, with a mirrored bedroom ceiling, and an upstairs bar/ waiting room. I was tempted by that because it also had an original mid century tangerine coloured cuboid bathroom suite, and a 1930s summerhouse, but I just couldn’t.

muddyford · 16/08/2026 18:56

DH viewed a house (I had been struck down by a stomach bug) with a beautiful stone fireplace. Seller said he'd built it and was taking it with him.

EssCarGo · 16/08/2026 18:57

Life size clowns! Lying on the bed and sitting at the dining table. Fucking terrifying.
