What are the weirdest things you've seen when viewing a property?

Viewing - similar to the above, wierd layouts including a ground floor flat where access to the garden was via a window (seemingly private to the flat but didn’t inspire much confidence!). In the home we bought, we witness the couple selling (who were divorcing) fire the EA in front of us for not generating “decent interest” (clearly they had judged us not worthy).

Renting - lots of cases of unexpected viewings. But I also remember when we’d got notice on a rental, and we allowed viewings evenings and weekends, and one day per week. Landlord was selling (of course using our styling/improvements in images). Anyhoo. Lesson learnt. I was heavily pregnant with hyperemisis. The EA constantly pushed their luck and just turned up outside of suggested times. Once when I was naked in the bath (with my puke bucket). I was so poorly I hadn’t even heard them come in. Small flat. Door opened…I screamed and all I could think to say was “I told you no NOT today it’s my only days rest”. Stood up (bump and all) dropped the bucket as I was dizzy, catching the shower curtain and wall; which wasn’t exactly my finest moment. Cursed and cried. Poor woman of the couple viewing looked mortified. Apologised massively. EA basically ran out of the place and never again let themselves in.

House in France with a septic tank in a cupboard inside the house. Owner proudly told us that it hadn’t been emptied in 40 years as the design meant it wasn’t necessary. My eyes were streaming, I was quietly dry heaving and the estate agent was literally green.

Cluelessasacucumber · 16/08/2026 20:35

A massive reptile tank set into the wall between the bathroom and bedroom (so it formed a window). We just couldn't work out why anyone had thought that a good idea.

We also viewed a property where they'd just kept altering things and adding bits, but not in a good way. It was a very ordinary ex council house that had all these narrow hallways added and normal sized rooms divided into tiny small rooms. But worst of all where the "extensions" on each door which were essentially sheds, one which had a sort of shower in it , I think for a dog or possible someone doing very dirty work, that ran straight out the floor like a camping shower. They cant possibly have had planning permission for any of it.

Silverbirchleaf · 16/08/2026 20:44

Very tame compared to everyone else, but there was some dentures on a small shelf in a lounge on full display. We purchased that house.

Another house we viewed we still refer to as The Slobs house from Harry Enfield. The estate agent gave us a warning about its state before we got there. It was so messy, stuff everywhere. One of those houses you had to be careful where you walked

We turned up to view a bungalow, on the door a sign saying remove your shoes, or wear shoe covers, thought good start must be houseproud, How wrong can you be! it was an absolute dump inside, kitchen had all these greasy dusty jars and bottles on the top of the wall cabinets, wiped our feet when we got outside.

Edited

The shoe covers must be for your protection! 😂

Looked at a rental years ago in Aldgate East. HMO 7 existing bedrooms and apparently two French men were splitting one bedroom for cheaper rent.

Estate agent showed me the kitchen and told me it was all about to be completely remodelled, oven moved to the other side of the room etc (so...no kitchen for how long?)

Got to the bedroom (£700 pcm for a double room which at the time was nicer side of average), supposedly tenant had already moved out but there was a dirty plate with crumbs and a blob of ketchup on the desk. Big chunk of hair on the floor.

I questioned it being a single bed, estate agent gestured to it and said "Ah yes this is normally a double."

4 bedroom flat at very top of a high rise

Every room had a TV on playing a different Alfred Hitchcock film. I left as I had vertigo

Tatenk · 16/08/2026 21:12

One floor had been given to the (many) cats and stank so much of piss that our eyes were streaming.

Also another house infested with bluebottles which was like walking into the end
bit of the crystal maze but bluebottles, and the EA trying to act as if nothing was amiss 😂

Went to see a house with my mum for my sister who was moving back to the area. It was an open house so lots of people viewing. The way to the back garden was through the utility room off the kitchen. There was a pulley thing hanging from the ceiling with washing on. We had to duck down to get out of the door. A load of undies, socks and shirts!!!! At least they were clean

Slightyamusedandsilly · 16/08/2026 21:29

I didn't view it, but revisited the photographs online repeatedly, because I was confused.

A raised bath (so kind of on a pedestal) in a bedroom, in front of a floor to ceiling window. Not a posh house, overlooking countryside. A very average 2 bed house in a built up area. Definitely not an en suite. Just the bath. No walls / partition from the bedroom.

Weird.

Optimisticdramalarma · 16/08/2026 21:36

Not buying but my ex told me that when he was looking for a flat to rent,he viewed one where the toilet was next to the cooker

'You could have a shit and flip your burger at the same time'

My mater went to view a house with the intention of doing a swap

They'd taken all the radiators out and stacked them in the shed

And there was a door in the lounge-she thought it was a cupboard

Nope,a loo-you could have a wee and not miss any of your program

When i did a swap,my mother cheerfully pointed out the spot where I'd accidentally given birth to ds (hadn't known i was pregnant until I gave birth-i thought i had backache, gave birth, stood up on the landing)

They thought it was charming and we moved the following week

A hosepipe attached to the bathroom sink and feeding the toilet cistern. Same house, walls removed and no rsj's and odd bulges in remaining walls. Read a year later that the house was later rented by a gang hiding a stash of weapons from a robbery there!!

LeahCariad · 16/08/2026 21:42

One house I viewed had no hob in the kitchen. Took me a second to figure out why the kitchen looked strange. It was reasonably newly done, but very strangely laid out. The EA said "loads of houses don't have hobs". I've never been in a kitchen without one but what do I know 🤷‍♀️

I also viewed a different house, lovely, but there was a strange smell throughout. Source of the smell was hundreds of jars of homemade pickled onions - they were in every possible cupboard in the house, including the airing cupboard.

Didn't buy either.

Kimmers4334 · 16/08/2026 21:45

An outhouse/workshop area with some sort of large carpeted “cubicle” inside in one corner made from old double glazing units. The cubicle had a wooden door with a bolt and a night latch lock on the outside, and one of the double glazing units was smashed on the inside pane. I couldn’t work out what it was for (originally thought animals but then why was it carpeted??). It was just so creepy and the more I looked at it the more I got bad vibes

JulietteHasAGun · 16/08/2026 21:45

Side by side twin toilets in the bathroom. I had visions of me being on the loo and dh racing in for a shit next to me! We did not buy the house. Guess if I’d loved it I’d have removed one.

apparently the vendors kids used to argue who could go to the loo first so he put a second toilet in! Which is still a bad reason. I was stood wondering if it was the truth or if it was a sex thing 😂

My friend spent an extortionate amount of money on a new kitchen and appliances. She doesn't cook anything at all. They don't want to 'spoil' it 🙄

House described as four bedrooms had three bedrooms then you had to come out of the back door, walk through a small paved outdoor area and up a metal fire escape to bedroom 4.
Same house had a metal outbuilding in the garden which took up nearly all the garden and contained a massive hot tub.
And a bar built in the centre of the lounge.
when we arrived the owner was in her jeans and bra ironing in the garage which she described as the utility room: only way into it was through the garage door.
And the kitchen had a window which looked into the conservatory (they shared a wall).

The estate agent didn’t even ask us for feedback.

caringcarer · 16/08/2026 21:49

I viewed a house once and in one bedroom there was a snake in a tank. I screamed and ran out. In the photos there was no snake or tank. I did not buy the house.

7238SM · 16/08/2026 21:52

Sanitary pads had been flung onto the ceiling and stuck up there 🤢

FanSpamTastic · 16/08/2026 21:52

A master bedroom with en suite - but there was only a half wall around the en suite so as you walked in the room you had a view of the toilet, bath shower and then if lying in bed also had a full panoramic view of anyone sat on the throne!

cantpullthetrigger · 16/08/2026 21:54

First viewing of a country cottage and a whopping five to six foot grass snake slithered down the wall by the shed, into some bushes.

The estate agent was speechless, as was I!

Not enough to put me off buying it though, and strangely never seen it since!

One house we viewed last year had life size cardboard cutouts all over the place.

Take That. Boyzone. Freddie mercury. Various sports people. And the King.

Was highly amusing but quite bizarre

When you say 'the King' do you mean Charles or Elvis?
