What are the weirdest things you've seen when viewing a property?

Just a rental buy there was a teenager boy still in bed.
And a 5 bed house but we weren't allowed to have 4 dc to live in it.

Eh? I need more information about this one..
(Not the teenage boy, they are always asleep.)
The not allowed to have 4 children bit. Who said this? How did they think they could enforce it in a house you bought?

TheChosenTwo · 16/08/2026 19:04

The estate agent peering at the labels in bras on the owners airer in the conservatory 🤮
i was upstairs in one of the back bedrooms at the time and looked out the window, spotted him through the clear glass roof, bloody creep.
Also went to view a house that had multiple do shits on the floor. After looking in the first living area downstairs I didn’t make it any further in to the viewing. The estate agent (different from the previous pervert) totally understood!

Ineedanewsofa · 16/08/2026 19:09

The tenant who had apparently not agreed to the viewing and thought he was being burgled so came charging downstairs with a bat, only wearing tiny pants.
A three bed house where every room was bright red or bright purple. Hall/stairs/landing were lime green.
Sex swing.

Cherrysoup · 16/08/2026 19:11

Free standing toilet and bath in the bedroom. Odd, because right next door was a large shower room which would have fit both.

Went for a viewing looking to buy our first flat. Bloke fast asleep on the sofa. In the same flat, there was a large cage with rats in the bathroom, shavings spilling all over the floor. When viewing the garden, the lady told us you stop noticing the daily 4am freight train which was at the end of the lawn.

Went to see a social housing place with an occupational therapist, to see whether it would be appropriate to adapt for DH's disability.

It was going well until she pulled back a big curtain along the wall between the bedroom and bathroom, to see if they could knock through for a hoist. Only to reveal about 40 VERY close up, framed photos of fannies!

My husband once viewed a rental that was so manky, the letting agent gagged and ran out the door.

MakingLasagne · 16/08/2026 19:15

Went to view a student house for my 3rd year, tour with the estate agent etc, middle of the day, walked in on a couple having sex

Probably not unusual for a couple of undergrads to be shagging at 2pm on a Thursday but it’s stuck in my mind!

MabelAnderson · 16/08/2026 19:17

Pink shag pile everywhere, including on shelves. “Erotic” sculptures. (The same house). A loo in the kitchen (not the same house).

walterwhitesgf · 16/08/2026 19:19

Family Ashes ..in urns/ boxes with names and inscriptions on ... placed around the fireplace .
On the marble base iykwim

A large airing cupboard with a big pile of washing on the floor. As we watched, the washing started moving and a child crawled out! It was rented and the tenants seemed to have no idea we were coming. Didn’t seem a happy house to buy.

In another house, a toilet in the garage. Not in a cubicle. Just a random loo. No thanks.

Rhodesbride · 16/08/2026 19:21

Dog bowls with wet dog food in on the carpet by the tv stand in the living room!

HinzKunz · 16/08/2026 19:21

We were shown round by the lovely owner. She was cooking and told us to ‚head upstairs and take a good look‘.
Eveything was going well until we got to the back bedroom. I opened the door to find a hair salon. Two ladies were sat under frier hoods and another was sweeping the floor. It was very odd.

I walked into a bedroom to find a 30 something years old man naked from the waist up in the bed and his mum was showing me around like it was just a normal thing. Very awkward. I did end up buying the house though

This should be a scene in a comedy 😂. Did you say anything to them?

I've viewed a lot of houses...!

  • taken into a pitch black room and told not to turn on the lights because grandma was sleeping and couldn't be disturbed
  • one where the bottom halves of all the doors were missing as they'd been eaten by the dog
  • several divorce / bankruptcy claimed homes - with graffiti over the internal walls

the first flat I bought I only saw in the dark at the live in tenant wasn't happy about the landlord selling and refused to open the curtains for the viewing (it was a actually a beautiful flat once you saw it in daylight! 😆)

Any1ForTennis · 16/08/2026 19:32

I assisted an elderly family member with viewings as they were bit nervous of having strangers in their rather large house.

We had several people (all couples) come to view at various points that day and everytime the viewing couple were in the master bedroom my relative pointed out the very spot her DH had dropped down dead, what happened with the police etc 😳.

I kept telling her that might put people off but she wouldn't stop! The poor people didn't know what to say to that. Took ages to get the house sold 😆.

SmallWhiteFluffyClouds · 16/08/2026 19:33

I viewed a quirky old house that had had an extension put on. Upstairs to get between the extension and the old house you had to crouch down and crawl through a tiny door that went under a beam. It was so small even the children had to bend down. It made me laugh watching the posh estate agent doing it.

stample · 16/08/2026 19:39

Carpets and manky rugs in bathroom
a tiny kitchen With a cupboard that revealed the built in gas hob
cupboard under the stairs by the kitchen which had a bed and chest of drawers in

Ooh yes! I just remembered viewing another where we were warned of an 'unusual layout' which ended up with us climbing down into a basement, then climbing a ladder to enter a hatch into a teenage boys bedroom (complete with teen boy inside). It had no windows and clearly wouldn't meet fire regs but the occupants very proudly told us how their son no longer disturbed them and vice versa! 🙈

leshirondelles · 16/08/2026 19:46

Woman showing us round opened a wall cupboard above a bed and a pile of porn mags fell out. Went next door and presumably owner of porn, son in his forties, was watching tv in a small room lined floor to ceiling with shelves of dvds, many of which were also porn. Incredibly seedy.

AFigureWalks · 16/08/2026 19:55

A soft focus, large framed photograph of an average looking middle aged man with a moustache, resting his head on his hands.
We had fun taking the piss later.

Yello24 · 16/08/2026 19:57

Well I actually bought a house and was slowly looking around and had been there about an hour when we went into the back bedroom and there was a man asleep on a mattress.
The woman we’d bought from was retiring to Jamaica and her son had thought he’d use the house until someone else did.
Oh and he had shit in the bath because the water was turned off and the bog was already full. Nice.

Cantspeakwontspeak · 16/08/2026 20:07

I was once selling a house with an eviction order (tenants hadn’t paid rent in a year) estate agent had to call to say they would have to stop viewings until residents had left after doing one viewing and coming in to find the recently out of jail son in bed with two women. So not my viewing but unfortunately someone had to see that ..

AgentPidge · 16/08/2026 20:10

Went to look at a flat that was being rented out and the tenants obviously weren't happy with the place being sold. So they were sitting there watching TV while we were shown round (by landlord or estate agent, I can't remember) and they totally ignored us. Then in the bathroom the bath was full to the brim with some black liquid, looked like engine oil. We didn't buy it!
