Mine is in Titanic (1997). The immediate aftermath of the ship hitting the iceberg and the reaction to it. I have seen the
film more times than I can count but bit still takes my breath away.

When the twist is revealed at the end of The Sting and of course Marseille in Casablanca.

I love the final scene in Billy Elliott but feel irrationally annoyed that the actor playing the adult Billy stretches his neck like a million times during it. For some reason it really irritates me. I have to ignore that and focus on the other characters / actors who are wonderful.

Watch this end scene again, you have completely misunderstood, hopspot

Adam Cooper was not an actor, but the leading dancer in Matthew Bourne’s
all male homoerotic Swan Lake, shown limbering up - bending and stretching
mind and body for his magnificent entrance-
he represents Billy Elliotts glory, size and power, in the culmination of years
of hard work dedication and sacrifice
he is informed his family are in the house, he is not going to disappoint them-
he doesn’t disappoint any of us

Enjoyable thread bringing back many movie memories. Also Erin Brockovich when Danny Devitos character asks Erin where is everyone and she replies the “the girls all went to lunch” and he says in his great DD deadpan way…aren’t you one of the girls?

Albert Finney!

Julia Roberts was at her prettiest and most engaging in this film (imho of course)

I don’t think there’s any need for this response. I understand he’s a dancer. I felt he overplayed the stretching. I haven’t said anything about being disappointed. You’ve gone completely over the top on a lovely thread.

Talking of Erin Brockovich. Love it where Albert Finney tells her she's been making the office staff feel uncomfortable with her risqué clothes. She says well I think I look nice and so long as I've got one ass instead of two I'll wear what I like 😆 🤣 or words to that effect.

another wonderful Albert Finney completely pleasurable cinematic occasion
is the feasting scene from Tom Jones with Joyce Redmond - now there were
two uninhibited lovers ha ha, the entire film served up as a romp

Whilst I completely get all the love for the final scene in Billy Elliot, my "favourite" scene is another one from that film, the one where Billy's dad crosses the picket line. I say "favourite" as it's difficult to watch, but it's probably the scene from a film I think about most - just how difficult that decision would have been for the character and how it would impact on him, his family and friends.

That and the scene from Brassed Off when the band play at the hospital! I seem to have a thing for films set in mining communities 😁

Edited as missed a word!

The scene at the end of Lost In Translation when Bill Murray whispers in Scarlett Johansson's ear.

bendmeoverbackwards · 18/08/2026 01:17

Kramer v Kramer - beautiful calm breakfast scene where Dustin Hoffman and Billy make breakfast and sit down together after previous disasters. Love that there’s no dialogue but you know everything is all right between them.

Final scene of Educating Rita

bendmeoverbackwards · 18/08/2026 01:22

Most of Parenthood but especially the scene with the vibrator in the black out - ‘it’s an electric ear cleaner’ 😂 and where Dianne Wiest finds the nude photos of her daughter and her boyfriend.

FastFood · 18/08/2026 09:19

The drill instructor scene in Full Metal Jacket. I had to stop to write down the insults so I don't forget them (I have forgotten most of them now)

The Great Beauty - Of course the amazing party scene, but also the flamingos and the nun. And the kid artist performance. The whole film is magnificent.

Totally different style: That stomach dropping shot in Jaws, where Chief Brody is sat with his wife behind him, and he realises that something is up in the water. It's 3 seconds, but it's such a masterful shot, you physically feel what he feels.

Disagree -
His stretching is part of being in the zone of a highly focused professional dancer oblivious to everything else -
the curtain goes up
the lights are bright
he leaps !!!! …..
and my heart soars !!!
I love every part of his movements
love Billy Elliot the movie
and the stage musical
and Mathew Bourne’s swan lake
love ! Love ! Love !

Edited

That film has me in tears at many scenes. It depicts the harsh times they lived in in so many ways.

the drinking in the boat scene !! The best !

The closing scenes of The Inn of the Sixth Happiness, when Ingrid Bergman and her 50 orphaned Chinese children march into Xi'an singing This Old Man.

I've cried every single time I've watched that scene, ever since I was six years old in 1969.

Full Metal Jacket is brutal. The dramatic climax in the bathroom is haunting.

powershowerforanhour · 18/08/2026 11:24

A lighter one:
The visual feast of Marie Antoinette and her decadent friends enjoying life in Versailles, to the track "I Want Candy". Sofia Coppola had fun making that film I reckon.

CharSiu · 18/08/2026 11:25

When Susan Sarandon shoots up the sexist truck drivers rig and it blows up in Thelma and Louise.

When the soldier in Dog Soldiers shouts ‘come and have a go if you think your hard enough’ to the werewolves

When Pip finds Magwitch on the marshes and when he pulls down the curtains after Miss Havisham dies in Great Expectations, with John Mills.

In the descent when the treacherous friend gets climbing axed by accident in the neck.

Father Goose, when Leslie Caron thinks she has been bitten by a snake and Cary Grant is sucking out the poison. When they marry over the mic and the incredulous look on Leslie Howard’s face that Goody Two Shoes and the Filthy Beast are marrying.

@AreThereSomewhereIslands my family fled the Japanese to Hong Kong and my dear Father lived under Japanese rule when they occupied for 3 years from 1941 as a very young person. It gave him a life long hatred of the Japanese. I have a photo of all of the family not long after liberation for them. My grandparents look totally broken. It is a lovely film. If you are further interested in that period watch City of Life and Death but be warned it is extremely upsetting and has horrific scenes of the Rape of Nanking.

Brief Encounter, Fred to Laura -
"You've been a long way away. Thank you for coming back to me.".😪

Laughingravy · 18/08/2026 12:07

Oh so many but a few that spring to mind:
Went the Day Well? - A WW2 film. A grenade rolls into a room full of school children and the elderly lady looking after them picks it up, steps into the corridor and pulls the door shut.....

The Russian Arc - The whole film was done in one take, so the whole thing is in effect one amazing scene.

To Have and Have Not - Bogie and Bacall's first film. 'You can whistle can't you Steve? You just put your lips together and blow'. It's a wonder the film doesn't burst into flames.

Get Carter - Michael Caine walking along side the body of his brother's killer who is in a hopper on cable system dumping coal waste into the sea. It so captures the bleakness of the north in the 60s and 70s.

Sunset Boulevard - The 'I am big. It's the pictures that got small' scene.

Toy Story 2 - Jessie's song 'When She loved Me'

The colosseum fight scene in Gladiator 1. 'Single Column! Single Column!'

JuliettaCaeser · 18/08/2026 13:29

The court scene in Kramer v Kramer when the lawyer shouts she’s a bad mother and the husband shakes his head.

Such a shame what happened in real life to the Albert finney character in Erin Brocovich he married a real house wives of Beverley hills star and stole vast amounts of client money.

@LindorDoubleChoc That scene is so funny. There's the lady with her knitting and Horse's niece too. Always makes me howl with laughter 😀
