What colour is my hair (photo)

I was platinum blonde as a young child darkening to a lightish honey blonde as a teen. Nowadays I'd probably consider myself mousy, albeit on the lighter end of mouse. I don't think I'm quite dark enough to be brown haired. Three times this weekend I've been referred to as a redhead/strawberry blonde. This has surprised me, as I've never thought of my hair as red at all!

I'm in my 50s my hair is completely natural and I have a small amount of grey, but not much. My hair is probably a bit lighter than usual as I do get natural blonde highlights in the sun, which there's been plenty of this year. There's quite a mix of colours in my hair, it's never been one uniform shade because it lightens so easily in the sun.

So what colour would you describe my hair as?

The second photo with the sun on it does look blonder

I look like Angelina Jolie and if you can’t see that it must be your screen settings

Thank you for all you contributions those who have actually answered sensibly.

All the bullies just trying to put the boot in, rest assured I'm far more resilient than to let it get to me, and your behaviour says far more about you than it does about me! I'll be hiding this thread now, but feel free carry on with the pile on in my absence if that's all you have to do on a Sunday night.

This is probably the most ridiculous mumsnet thread I've seen in years. Are you OK OP? Like really?

NewLifter · 16/08/2026 20:28

The first pic looked gingery / light brown
I know that's not what you want yo hear, but you chose the pic!

Second pic is a strawberry blonde

Snowcanwait · 16/08/2026 20:37

On my screen it definitely looks auburn with highlights. I can see some bits of grey. When I saw it I thought oh that looks similar to my colour but then looked at a photo of mine and realised I must be completely delusional! I definitely thought mine had more auburn than it does which makes me thinks yours is very auburn/red

My DD has a very similar colour and we’ve never found a name for it

Ginger. Lovely!

I asked chat gpt.

I asked ChatGPT too.

It did NOT say blonde. Fancy that. 😆 It says the general colour is light ash brown/mushroom brown. Neutral, cool-brown as the main colour.

(I noticed yours said light warm brown/beige brown...)

Chat gpt opinion....

Another one that has ChatGPT saying it's light brown.

Time to accept your hair MAY be light brown @carebearhairbear That's if you're even still reading, seeing as you said you've flounced and hidden the thread. And people disagreeing = bullying you. Behave!

Honestly, asking this question on Mumsnet and then getting really angry when people give an opinion you don't want to hear is just ludicrous. Many people are saying light brown. All you has to say was 'well I would class it more as blonde, but thanks for your opinions anyway.'

Defo. Faulty ChatGPT, and everyone who is saying light brown has faulty monitors. 😆

Have to agree.

Watchoutfortheslowaraf · 16/08/2026 21:26

OP isn’t coming back because people aren’t saying they think her hair is blonde. she has flounced and the thread is now hidden to her.

it has made me laugh the comment saying for posters to carry on posting if that’s all they have to do on a Sunday night. When OP posted this thread on a sunday night.

Pinkgin00 · 16/08/2026 21:33

In the first photo I only see red tones.

In your second photo , this looks similar to my sons hair. I have no idea what to call it but its a golden, sandy blond/brown shade with red undertones.😆 in daylight his hair looks blonde, but it photos the red undertones show more and it can look more brown, even auburn depending on the lighting.

Lilyargin · 16/08/2026 21:35

@Marroon There really isn’t “quite a bit of grey“.

LemonRedwood · 17/08/2026 12:44

I clicked on this thread because I have had a recent conversations with friends who can't decide what colour my hair is and I was curious, and lo and behold your photo could pretty much be a picture of my hair OP 😄

My husband calls me a redhead and my boss says I'm ginger, but various friends have labelled it dark blonde, honey blonde, strawberry blonde, light brown, brown, and mousey (I'm less fond of that friend 😂)

I think it just very much depends what light we're standing in and we just need to accept the fact we're weird hair chameleons!

LemonSnail · 17/08/2026 12:50

It’s a lovely colour, the very light brown, reddish tones and light grey work well together.

Your DD's hair looks like a (very pretty!) ginger in that photo to me, and the OP's looks gingery too, albeit a bit lighter.

FoundAUserNameDownTheSofa · 17/08/2026 13:05

Your second photo looks like strawberry blonde that has grey streaks - but what looks like it could be grey may well be the ashy blonde highlights. I reckon this is why you are feeling confused - as you age a little people aren’t seeing the ash tone and thinking blonde, they’re interpreting it as grey and therefore think your underlying colour is strawberry blond.

I agree with the poster who said that when you're blonde as a child/young tween (10-12-ish) and go mousy/light brown in your mid teens, it's hard to let go of that 'blonde' identity. OP is seeing herself as always blonde, but she's actually a cool light brown. The more I look at the pics the more I think she is dying it too. Nothing wrong with that, but the small bits of grey at the roots suggest this.

PrettyLittleRose · 18/08/2026 10:50

Sorry @FoundAUserNameDownTheSofa I have no idea why I quoted your post there! ^

Cuppachuchu · 18/08/2026 10:59

@carebearhairbear its Auburn. Beautiful colour.
I had it and didn't properly appreciate it. Used to have it highlighted blonde through my 20s and 30s.
It started going lighter in my 40s and now in my 60s it is light blonde. Or creamy light grey. Not terrible.

PrettyLittleRose · 18/08/2026 12:03

@Cuppachuchu yes I think many people who were auburn/ginger dyed it blonde or brown (for some years) because they didn't appreciate their 'red' hair. Geri Halliwell and Kate Winslet are 2 such people. Both got reddish/light brown hair and have dyed it blonde for many years.

Kate's hair in Titanic was gorgeous. I mean it looks OK dyed blonde, but better red IMO. Kate has tried to claim she is a natural blonde, but lots of photographs from when she was a child/teen say otherwise. She has always been a redhead - strawberry blonde when she was little...

Geri Halliwell is the same, a natural redhead but dyes it blonde quite often. Looks OK blonde, but better red IMO. (First 2 pics are Kate, second 2 are Geri.)

It’s light brown, with caramel undertones. I think it’s beautiful.
