What colour is my hair (photo)

I was platinum blonde as a young child darkening to a lightish honey blonde as a teen. Nowadays I'd probably consider myself mousy, albeit on the lighter end of mouse. I don't think I'm quite dark enough to be brown haired. Three times this weekend I've been referred to as a redhead/strawberry blonde. This has surprised me, as I've never thought of my hair as red at all!

I'm in my 50s my hair is completely natural and I have a small amount of grey, but not much. My hair is probably a bit lighter than usual as I do get natural blonde highlights in the sun, which there's been plenty of this year. There's quite a mix of colours in my hair, it's never been one uniform shade because it lightens so easily in the sun.

So what colour would you describe my hair as?

It is dark enough to be light brown (and mice are brown!), I certainly wouldn't call it blonde.

Badgerstmary · 16/08/2026 18:02

Brown with a little hint of red

backformoreofthesame · 16/08/2026 18:04

Strawberry blond fading to brown / grey as you age
possibly more auburn in the winter ?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 16/08/2026 18:06

My hair is a similar colour and I was called a redhead by someone I’d only just met a few days ago. I think it’s how it looks when the sun is shining through it. My dad was a genuine copper top, so there might be something there.

101Alsatians · 16/08/2026 18:09

Def not blonde.I'd say medium brown with a cherry tinge.

Hoping that doesn't make me 'obtuse'...

bananaapplepears · 16/08/2026 18:10

I can't see any blonde at all. I'd say its gingery brown. It's definitely dark enough to be brown in the photo. It might look different to you in real life.

If it's showing as dark enough to been brown on anyone's screens, it'll be to do with monitor settings, because, in real life it sits in the mid to dark blonde range, with natural light blonde highlights. I just thought the base colour was a non descript, light mousy tone, rather than red/strawberry tone. Happy to embrace the red though, albeit I find it odd that it suddenly seems to have developed in my 50s. Still thinking it might be to do with all the sun this year.

Looks like a reddy brown with bits of blonde scattered. Definitely wouldn't describe it as blonde though.

IsItBeesThoughLooshkin · 16/08/2026 18:18

I can’t believe anyone thinks this is brown!!! It’s clearly a warm medium blonde. It must look different on different screens.

WearingBeautifulShoes · 16/08/2026 18:20

Light brown with a slightly reddish tone

TheyGrewUp · 16/08/2026 18:20

Looks strawberry blonde to me.

triile · 16/08/2026 18:21

Mine changes in lighting drastically and I’ve been called a blonde and a brunette
i am a redhead!

Could have written this myself, white blonde as a young kid, darkening to mid blonde with natural highlights as a teen. Now heading toward ‘mousey’ especially in the underside. However many people including my hairdresser of 10 years swears it’s Red/strawberry blonde. I never saw it myself especially as there was no one red in the family at all…..until I had three red head kids myself!
im embracing being a red head now 👩‍🦰

Dandelionroots · 16/08/2026 18:27

Yours is almost exactly the same as mine.

I'm never sure if it's blonde or brown. I've never considered strawberry as despite having individual bright red strands, from a distance it doesn't appear red at all. I work with little kids: when they draw me, nearly all of them use a brown pencil for hair. Due to this, I mostly think brown 😂.

DestituteDesperate · 16/08/2026 18:31

I see the very orange undertones so I’d say you’re Elvis, strawberry blonde.

DreadedInn · 16/08/2026 18:32

I really would call that brown. Light brown, but brown nonetheless.
I can’t see any red.

My DD has a very similar colour and we’ve never found a name for it

Her hair looks red to me, a beautiful colour.

Yeah it's not. In real life no-one has ever referred to my hair as brown, because it's not. Monitor settings do vary, of course! I'm trying to take a better photo, but its almost impossible to do it without identifying myself as I have a few MNers as friends that would recognise me/my house & garden.

It's pretty light. At the moment I have proper light blonde highlights round the front from the sun. The base colour I thought was fairly non descript light mousy tones, but everyone seems to be calling it red/strawberry at the moment. I wonder if the sun fading my hair a bit might be bringing out the red tones?

I do have a few greys but not many. I can distinguish them from my blondes, since despite my hair being quite fine and silky overall, the bastarding greys are twice as coarse, crinkly and wiry, and like to stick up out of my hair as if I've been shocked.

Why are you asking for opinions? Not being snarky but you seem to know what it is 🤷‍♀️

FookFookFook · 16/08/2026 18:42

It also looks brown to me. Must have the same monitor as others.

carebearhairbear · 16/08/2026 18:43

Let's try this, although it doesn't really show the red, more the front natural highlights. Edited to add, maybe it does look a bit red. Weird. It must be the sun that's caused the change, surely. I can't possibly have had red tones my whole life without noticing! Or maybe a weird menopause effect?

One person's dark blonde is another light brown. It's confusing because my hair is a bit darker than yours but I have a box of hair dye that is much darker than my colour (and a lot darker than yours) that describes the shade as "dark blonde". Whereas I have had some people call my hair light brown. I think it's just the case that there's a big liminal space between "very blonde" (that Swedish ashy/platinum colour and "true brown" (dark chestnut).

You do seem a bit inconsistent because you don't think your hair has cool tones but also are surprised it is being described as having reddish undertones. Warm tones (or not cool) are reddish. It's either warm or cool, or it could be both in different places (I think yours is)

It's a very nice colour anyway.

Because I'm not asking if its brown (it isn't) I'm asking if it has red/strawberry blonde undertones, since people keep referring to me irl as having red/strawberry blonde hair, and I didn't think I did.
