What colour is my hair (photo)

I was platinum blonde as a young child darkening to a lightish honey blonde as a teen. Nowadays I'd probably consider myself mousy, albeit on the lighter end of mouse. I don't think I'm quite dark enough to be brown haired. Three times this weekend I've been referred to as a redhead/strawberry blonde. This has surprised me, as I've never thought of my hair as red at all!

I'm in my 50s my hair is completely natural and I have a small amount of grey, but not much. My hair is probably a bit lighter than usual as I do get natural blonde highlights in the sun, which there's been plenty of this year. There's quite a mix of colours in my hair, it's never been one uniform shade because it lightens so easily in the sun.

So what colour would you describe my hair as?

Because I'm not asking if its brown (it isn't) I'm asking if it has red/strawberry blonde undertones, since people keep referring to me irl as having red/strawberry blonde hair, and I didn't think I did.

"I definitely don't have any ashy/cool tones"
"since people keep referring to me irl as having red/strawberry blonde hair, and I didn't think I did."

What undertones did you think it had if not cool or warm though?

For the record I think it has red undertones which isnt the same as being red.

Helpwithdivorce · 16/08/2026 18:53

Looks brown to me. Plain light brown

patooties · 16/08/2026 18:54

Your hairs the same colour as mine - I’m a redhead.

Mine changes in lighting drastically and I’ve been called a blonde and a brunette
i am a redhead!
I can see red in yours

I can see no red in yours. At all

SunshineAndFizz · 16/08/2026 18:57

Mate. It’s ginger.

Or yes strawberry blonde (which I interpret as light ginger).

terrifiedgran · 16/08/2026 19:02

Yours is very similar to mine. Brown. But I admit that sometimes people tell me it looks reddish. Definitely never been anywhere near blonde though. I've done the opposite to you and started very dark and at almost 50 I'm now roughly your colour. My mum is ginger, so must be where I get the red that sometimes gets seen.

I thought it was kind of generic neutral mid blonde. I didn't think it had especially cool or warm undertones.

I would call that a light strawberry blood as well or a sort of reddish honey blonde maybe

bumblingbovine49 · 16/08/2026 19:04

Blonde not blood obviously 🙄

bananaboats · 16/08/2026 19:05

Looks brown to me, cant see any blonde or red in it at all.

My DD has a very similar colour and we’ve never found a name for it

Such beautiful hair !

carebearhairbear · 16/08/2026 19:13

I'm loving the way some people are throwing 'brown' around as if it is kind of insult. It isn't, brown hair is absoluely lovely, and I did have brown hair, I'd have no problem with that. I don't have brown hair though, so people repeatedly saying that really isn't helping me answer my question. If your screen settings are so far out that my mid blonde hair looks brown, you're not really going to be able to see to help me with whether it has red/strawberry blonde undertones or not.

It just looks the same as mine, which is brown, which I like.

MabelAnderson · 16/08/2026 19:14

Op i think it’s a warm blonde, so will vary from a paler gold to strawberry blonde even to a dark red blonde in darkest strands.
It’s stunning hair.
My great aunt had hair similar to your colour, she was in between a warm dark blonde and strawberry blonde, it was also lovely as she aged and it mixed with silver.

Let's try this, although it doesn't really show the red, more the front natural highlights. Edited to add, maybe it does look a bit red. Weird. It must be the sun that's caused the change, surely. I can't possibly have had red tones my whole life without noticing! Or maybe a weird menopause effect?

Edited

In this pic it has no brown I would say mostly red with some blonde highlights.

YosoyEduardo · 16/08/2026 19:50

The thing is OP you could have a hundred people stand in front of you (so no screen filter) and not all one hundred would agree on the colour. You might not see brown but other people will. It isn't a right or wrong answer it's simply individual perception. You understand that don't you?

Shloopie · 16/08/2026 19:55

I have noticed that people who were very blonde in childhood tend to spend more time than others ruminating on their hair colour in adulthood. As if they can't fully disconnect from the blonde identity.

I’m very definitely a redhead. Born one. It just fades with age

AtlasCedar · 16/08/2026 19:58

Light chestnut blonde

When you’re constantly complimented and told how beautiful your hair is as a child and then it changes it’s easy to feel like your beauty has faded away. We absorb the messages we are told as children.

I don’t think a single person is saying brown as an insult, I can’t see any comment remotely talking negatively about your hair or brown hair. I think you’re just being weirdly offended about people who don’t think your hair is blonde.

You also don’t think your hair has any warmth so your own interpretation of the colour is hardly the be all and end all.

2026newname · 16/08/2026 20:00

The number of times you’ve referred to your “natural blonde highlights”. Confused

Airyfaerie · 16/08/2026 20:03

To me it looks like beige blonde, which is a warmer tone and can look slightly pinkish in some lights. I'd say it's around a level 8, so medium blonde (platinum being level 10, and the lightest brown being level 5-6). I'm not a hairdresser, just messed around with bleaching my hair a lot! It's a lovely colour

Smallestshadow · 16/08/2026 20:05

Reddy blonde or strawberry blonde.

I don’t think yours is “mousey”. I think of mousey as more like dark browny dark blonde with brown streaks/light brown with blonde streaks- like my daughter’s.
