What colour is my hair (photo)

I was platinum blonde as a young child darkening to a lightish honey blonde as a teen. Nowadays I'd probably consider myself mousy, albeit on the lighter end of mouse. I don't think I'm quite dark enough to be brown haired. Three times this weekend I've been referred to as a redhead/strawberry blonde. This has surprised me, as I've never thought of my hair as red at all!

I'm in my 50s my hair is completely natural and I have a small amount of grey, but not much. My hair is probably a bit lighter than usual as I do get natural blonde highlights in the sun, which there's been plenty of this year. There's quite a mix of colours in my hair, it's never been one uniform shade because it lightens so easily in the sun.

So what colour would you describe my hair as?

Honey blonde

Roastiesplease · 16/08/2026 17:11

Actually I like copilot for this kind of task

The hair colour in the image is a warm light brown with subtle honey and caramel undertones. There are faint natural variations — some strands lean slightly golden while others appear ashy or cooler brown, giving it a soft, dimensional look. Under natural light, this shade would likely reflect a gentle bronze sheen.

If you’re thinking about how to describe or match this tone, it sits between dark blonde and medium brown, often referred to in salons as “light chestnut” or “golden beige brown.”

Appreciate quality of photo will affect the results, but I definitely don't have any ashy/cool tones, nor anything dark enough to be considered brown.

Looks warm light brown to me. The grey is giving it an overall slightly lighter appearance but the natural colour in between is much darker.

Strawberry blonde

WineCharm · 16/08/2026 17:16

It looks like there is red in it and reminds me of the transitional stage when I darkened my blonde hair to brown. Underneath looks very dark brown.

SaraHoliday · 16/08/2026 17:19

I didn't read what you wrote initially and just looked at the photo. My initial thought was 'strawberry blonde'. I actually thought you had put a toner on it x

There's very little grey. Lots of light blonde natural highlights on the upper layer.

I’d think strawberry blond too!

Ginger

Shloopie · 16/08/2026 17:22

My hairdresser calls that a natural shade 7 blonde

Watchoutfortheslowaraf · 16/08/2026 17:22

It’s a definite mix. Definitely some strawberry blonde I would say and some lighter ashy blonde, grey and also brown where the hair hasn’t seen the sun as much so the roots and the underneath. It’s a lovely mix of colours.

That is the underneath of my hair, I flipped it forward over my face for anonymity. Right now I have lots of light blonde highlights framing my face, but that's because we've had so much sun. From the front alone, I'm sure people would have just said blonde, but those blonder bits will grow out over winter. My base/underneath colour is what is shown here.

light strawberry blonde

My DD has a very similar colour and we’ve never found a name for it

I have similar but slightly darker hair to yours and it is really hard to tell the difference between the lighter parts and it going grey. The grey hairs are coming in very spaced out so the overall effect is it looks lighter/cooler blonde.
Not saying that's the case for you (you know your own hair) but it is a huge advantage because it means I don't have to worry about dying the grey hairs and presumably in time will be completely grey but without any awkward transitional phase.

I would describe yours as strawberry blonde with cooler toned natural highlights.

ThatWasAFunDay · 16/08/2026 17:32

Reddy , blondy, light brown is how I’d describe it. It’s a very pretty colour.

I think my hair is marginally lighter than that as I have lots of natural blonde highlights, but defintely a similar base tone. It's warm, but not quite red to me.

There’s quite a bit of grey hair throughout.

You seem determined that the only answer you will accept is ‘blonde’ so I’m not sure the point of this thread.

Dontevenlookatme · 16/08/2026 17:39

I see a lot of red, perhaps it’s the light. I would say you’re on the darker side of strawberry blonde. I’m a natural redhead who at 60+ is turning a lighter strawberry blonde. Still very little grey but also much less red. (When you’re a redhead it does sort of define you so not to be one in later life is taking some getting used to!)

YouSawBrigadoon · 16/08/2026 17:41

A gingery brown.

Well I can't see lots of grey and neither can my hairdresser, so...

I have lots of natural blonde highlights, that's not in question. I'm just wondering what my base colour was. I described it as a light mouse, but have been surprised by being referred to as red/strawberry blonde.

It seems many on this thread are also seeing a red/stawberry blonde base.

I wonder if there is a way that the bleaching affect of the sun this year has brought out the reddish undertone? I've never thought of myself as having red/strawberry hair, and until this year I don't think I've been called that by anyone else.

carebearhairbear · 16/08/2026 17:54

It's not dark enough to be brown, light or otherwise. Either the photo is showing up weirdly on different screens or people are deliberate obtuse.

In any case, I guess to clarify my question, I'm asking if people can see red/strawberry tones in the underlying base colour, and from the answers, it seems like they can.

Now, I'm wondering if that red tone has come from the sun, and will grow out over winter, or whether it's always been there?
