It isn’t a “lazy Label” it’s fact.

Here is an example of what he actually said

“Slavery was not genocide, otherwise there wouldn't be so many damn Blacks in Africa or in Britain, would there?"

Pure racism!!

Even without this being explicitly spelled out as a warning of the worst case consequence, this may still be a deterrent to other would-be plagiarists and fabulists in academia, and more broadly. Especially if they've already put themselves in the public eye and received undeserved laudation for their work.

‘Don’t plagiarise because you might end up taking your own life’ is a fairly pointless lesson, imo. Much better to teach students how to avoid plagiarism, which is probably fairly simple at BTEC level.

No, don't plagiarise because shit can get serious is a perfectly reasonable lesson and teaches thinking that can work out the possible end result of actions. Eg. Setting fire to this dry stick = field ends up on fire = fire spreads = animals can be killed = fire spreads to nearby houses = people can be killed etc. Rather than - setting fire to this dry stick is fun whilst tossing said stick into field and wandering off oblivious to the ensuing carnage taking place behind.

Young people are not special snowflakes.

Actually I've had two family members attempt suicide but as I said that's irrelevant to the point here.

His suicide was a direct result of plagiarism. An extreme case but a case none the less. It should be a warning to others contemplating what they think is a harmless bit of copying.....

You do not know it was a direct result of plagiarism at all.

FivePots · 15/08/2026 14:39

We also don't know for sure that it was suicide.

LuckyHazelFox · 15/08/2026 15:10

There's not really scope for plagiarism in BTEC, given how written work is composed. Foundation Studies in FE, yes and Universities (ironically) cover this in first year of Undergrad.

If you mean because you haven’t looked at his work, fair enough.

If you mean because it’s all too finely-balanced, I’d suggest this is an example of academia making you stupider.

This isn’t like declining to appraise a Ming vase because you specialise in Qing.

This is like claiming you couldn’t spot if it were a teapot because teapots is someone else’s department.

Edited

correct - i ve not read his work.

but you misunderstand academic expertise, and what is fair scrutiny and what isn't.

A biochemist cannot evaluate the contribution of sociology of education effectively, like a sociologist will not be able to evaluate the work product of a molecular biologist. Effective scrutiny relies on deep engagement with theory and methodology.

It is my opinion that if some of the work was plagiarised, it does not mean that the whole work was plagiarised - and someone in the specific field can provide a relevant appraisal of that work and its contribution to knowledge.

madaboutpurple · 15/08/2026 15:34

I was sad to hear about his death. RIP . He seems to have been hounded by the newspapers.

No and Nigel Farage is a decent honest chap....🙄

LoisGriffinskitchen · 15/08/2026 15:51

I thought he had been cleared of the plagiarising,

personally I think he was vilified by the newspapers and social media in a way a white professor wouldn’t be (and has not been) .

as for the person who sold their tale of woe to the Times. May the blood money make any wine or food bitter forever.

Is direct copying and pasting or only changing one or two words allowed then?

This was the comparison done and it seems like there's quite a lot of instances...

I mean it could have been death from natural causes or an accidental death.

I presume you mean his former student, who had a right to discuss their own experience.
They are not responsible in any way for his death.

I've known someone who was under a lot of stress drink themselves to death. Choked on his own vomit after passing out. Could be something along those lines rather than a suicide.

Young people are not special snowflakes.

Young people are also not morons who can only learn from extreme examples. Besides which the chances of it ending this way are (thankfully) minuscule. Better to teach what plagiarism is, how to avoid it and what the actual consequences are.

I was really saddened by this news Jason Arday was cleared of plagiarism in his doctoral thesis. I’ve been through the doctoral process and there are checks on your work at every single stage - he would also have been subject to the gruelling Viva process where you need to prove you know your work inside out- Jason Arday’s thesis was additionally further investigated so his work had been rigorously scrutinised. To then have been subjected to the media stating your work was plagiarised must have been soul destroying.
Durham University have noted his kindness and commitment to supporting other doctoral students who must now be heartbroken by this news.

”I’ve been through the doctoral process and there are checks on your work at every single stage”. Are you referring to ‘peer review’? AKA having you homework marked by your mates.

Do you know what peer review is? It doesn’t sound like it.

Gingerwarthog · 15/08/2026 17:22

@HumbleKatey
Peer review is not normally part of any doctoral examination process. You do have regular meetings with your supervisory team which include discussion of your work to date. You also have to submit a thesis proposal and defend this before you write up and ultimately go through the oral viva examination. None of it is an easy process.
I’ve given my perspective on Jason Arday and I think what has happened is a tragedy. I am leaving the thread now as I am concerned at the tone of some of the comments and where the anger is coming from.

No, it hasn’t been confirmed that he took his own life, but it’s likely to be the case. The BBC interviewed a close friend, who said that Arden had told him that he didn’t see how he could carry on. Then he was found dead. The police said the death was not suspicious, so no question of foul play.

So it’s likely that he did take his own life, which is a real tragedy for his family.

I don’t know enough about the case to comment, I only know what was said on the BBC News. I just feel very sad for his partner and young DC.

In a newspaper as part of a pile on.?

Yes they have a right to discuss it but not like this.

Quite honestly this is why I prefer animals to people.

i note that the Times has now hidden it. Of course they have, heaven forbid they should take responsibility for being part of this.

Bulgebracket · 15/08/2026 18:32

Tragic ending but on the evidence presented he was a con artist who has potentially ruined the education of many students.

His colour is immaterial but many will evidently seek to play on it.

seanconneryseyebrow · 15/08/2026 18:45

Kathleen stock (whom I love) wrong an article and was on a long podcast about this last week. She hasn’t said anything wrong I don’t think - was very scathing about his lies and Cambridge for allowing this. I can only imagine she is feeling awful right now. As I said, I don’t think she did anything wrong but if I was her I feel horrendous

Writing about someone in the press and on social media is not a 'pile on'.
Reading what others are writing about you is always optional.

I place the majority of the blame on those at the University of Cambridge, who chose to turn a blind eye to the delusion whilst cynically promoting Arday for their own selfish ideological gains.

First, they appointed him to fulfill their DEI agenda without any due diligence, and secondly, they failed to provide adequate support when he was found out.
