Is this enough food for a barbecue?

I’m having a barbecue for 24 people on Saturday. I haven’t hosted for this many before so can I check with those if you who are more experienced whether this is the right amount of food?

On the barbecue:

24 burgers
24 hot dogs

Prepared in advance and served cold:

50 buns
A large gammon joint
15 barbecue chicken drumsticks
15 plain drumsticks
A potato salad with lemon and garlic
Homemade coleslaw
A Caesar salad
Another type of vegan salad

Then for people arriving I’ll have a cheeseboard, crisps, dips, and sweets out.

Is it enough? Should I add a pasta salad?

If I was doing the menu for me I’d make it all seafood. Tuna steaks, king prawns, salmon, seafood boils. And a butterflied leg of lamb and sesame and honey chicken.

But when I did a quick survey amongst the four or five of my closest friends they all felt quite strongly that barbecues are for burgers and sausages. I might do the former one day with different friends.

The cost of doing an entirely seafood BBQ for that many would be extremely expensive and you would find many of your guests would be disappointed, as they will look forward to grills meats.

I see what you’re saying but then I won’t have a burger or a sausage, I’m not keen on them and will have the chicken and salads, so I’m thinking that it will balance out.

But given you surveyed your friends and they all wanted burgers and sausages, I'm not sure that's going to work out for you. Your single sausage and single burger isn't going to go far amongst the 20+ people that do want burgers and sausages!

I think from the point of view of how much food you have, no-one is going to starve. But your proportions are out. It should be mostly burgers and sausages (if you're doing a burger and sausage BBQ), with a bit of salad. I wouldn't bother with drumsticks unless they are going to be served hot from the BBQ, and I wouldn't bother with gammon or pulled pork.

I said I’d surveyed four or five of the 24 coming. I’m definitely going to provide more variety than just burgers, sausages and salad. I’m doing the chicken - that at least won’t go to waste, because I’ll eat it.

As long as there’s enough food that’s the main thing.

Yeah I agree. Best to save that for a small occasion with people who are seafood lovers.

Please don’t throw any of that meat away, it’s all easily reusable. Do you have a freezer? Burgers and hot dogs will freeze beautifully, they’re great reheated or chucked in with a tomato pasta sauce with some grated cheese. The gammon will be ideal for sandwiches. Do your wallet and the planet a favour and don’t throw meat leftovers in the bin ☺️

I went with pulled pork rather than gammon, although I much prefer gammon.

Even if I froze it I’d never eat it, I don’t really like burgers or sausages.

Yes, currently 21 degrees, sunny and a gentle breeze. Perfect!

?! Who thinks of parking when they’re hosting? Such a random question. That’s for the guests to find.

Obviously not.

We always help guests out with parking and, when we've been to others' houses, the hosts have helped us out with parking, too. Isn't that just being a decent host?

None. If they want to bring cars then they’ll have to find a parking space on the road. I suspect there will be very, very few cars.

I have never once considered parking when throwing any kind of social event. It's up to anyone who wants to drive to worry about that. I'd recommend public transport personally.

100%. I have never needed help with parking since I passed my driving test. I thought that was the norm.

Most will be drinking alcohol anyway.

what on earth does “help out with parking” mean?

CatVester · 13/08/2026 19:50

The idea that when you have a barbecue you need to accommodate all the guests' cars might be the maddest comment on this thread, and there is some really stiff competition!

Apparently you not only need to cater to every whim and preference, you need to own a car park adjacent to your property 🤔

they’re talking the bloody piss
