Is this enough food for a barbecue?

I’m having a barbecue for 24 people on Saturday. I haven’t hosted for this many before so can I check with those if you who are more experienced whether this is the right amount of food?

On the barbecue:

24 burgers
24 hot dogs

Prepared in advance and served cold:

50 buns
A large gammon joint
15 barbecue chicken drumsticks
15 plain drumsticks
A potato salad with lemon and garlic
Homemade coleslaw
A Caesar salad
Another type of vegan salad

Then for people arriving I’ll have a cheeseboard, crisps, dips, and sweets out.

Is it enough? Should I add a pasta salad?

I did do that and said so in the OP.

I meant only that but bigger selection and more of it.

🙄

🤣 you had to find a way to be a bitch didn’t you? Maybe they were all getting drunk. Maybe her friends are all skinni bitches. Maybe they were on the snow.

Yeah, probably. It was before 5am, so I wasn't in my best humour. Bloody hate menopausal early waking.

Anyway, whilst I could probably have said it nicer, the BBQ element of her BBQ party was clearly not a success (although that doesn't mean the evening wasn't), so in future she probably should not host BBQs, or she needs to reconsider her BBQ offering.

Sounds like the cheesebard went down well, so next time why not go retro and host a cheese and wine party (which personally I'd love!)

FalteringFledgling · 16/08/2026 10:53

Wow op what a thread!!
What a ride I'm glad it went well in the end maybe you can offer the sausages somewhere or freeze them etx

Herenowatbroad · 16/08/2026 11:01

Posters are saying glad it went well

The Op posted at 2am following departure of last guest and makes no reference to having a good time whatsoever. In fact, the tone of the update is that she’s nothing but pissed off about the wasted food

Herenowatbroad · 16/08/2026 11:08

25 people and they ate 18 sausages and 14 burgers, 50% of the potato salad and 20% of the coleslaw and 1% of the salad and 0 halloumi skewers?

Maybe they’re all on WLI?

Funny how people read things differently. I read it as “ha, you nasty bitches are all full of shit like I said you were” rather than her not enjoying herself

Goodness, someone posting that straight after their last guest departs… would definitely indicate it hadn’t gone well!!

Last guest has just left.

Didn’t cook 18 of the 36 sausages because it was clear they would not get eaten. Eight of 22 burgers left. Also left was half of the potato salad, 99% of the green salad, 80% of the coleslaw, and nearly all of the halloumi and veg skewers, because by the time they were cooked everyone was full. The cheeseboards had little left.

Absolute massive waste of food, as always.

Edited

Freeze the uncooked food.

Why? I could easily post straight after a bbq, roaring success of tragedy. Why would they make a difference? Your phone is right there and it takes 30 seconds?!

are you suggesting she would be in such 90s style post event euphoria that she would be rendered unable to spend some time on social media?

The idea of being on a high post your last guest leaving, and thinking…. I know, I’ll update my Mumsnet thread to say “see!!! I was right you nasty bitches” …. Well, not the typical action of someone who has just had a whale of a time

Herenowatbroad · 16/08/2026 11:25

But clearly it’s something you’d want to do post party happy that you just held a successful and thoroughly enjoyable big bbq 🤷‍♀️

Herenowatbroad · 16/08/2026 11:28

Beach now and very limited signal so won’t be able to continue enjoying our tete a tete @Backedoffhackedoff !

littlemousebigcheese · 16/08/2026 11:51

I think it depends on the guests though! I wouldn’t eat chicken drumsticks but I’d like more than one slice of gammon. So if another guest didn’t want gammon but wanted more chicken we could ‘team up’ and share our rations but allocating one per person implies that everyone wants one of everything. It doesn’t allow for different preferences as such. I’d also not eat the burger but might want two sausages? Catering for random combos is really hard though so I don’t know what you can do!

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 16/08/2026 13:29

This is why many posters don’t come back to threads. They start one in good faith then get some good answers then the niggly nit pickers arrive and it all goes downhill.

Hope you had a lovely day.

Other than the left over food, how did it go? Did you have a good time or was it stressful for you? Did anyone offer to help or did you do all the cooking yourself?

You can freeze the burgers etc or maybe have another smaller impromptu bbq today - invite the neighbours or family. That's what we tend to do if we have leftovers after a big bbq.

It wasn’t stressful at all, it went extremely well and I had a great day. A couple of people asked if I needed anything doing, but I didn’t.

I do think hot dogs Vs proper sausages were a mistake.

Glad you had a good time!

I know that your cheeseboard went (because you said as much) but so did some of your BBQ meat (because you said as much). Sooooo the cheeseboard as it was wouldn't have been enough if you just removed the meat.

Do you just enjoy being difficult / combative?

Are you taking the piss? It wouldn’t have been enough without all of the other food? What? Are you okay hun?

The takeouts was the food they took with them because there was so much left over due to them eating like normal people and not being massive gluttons. No wonder there’s an obesity epidemic if people like you are attending barbecues, eating as much as you can, taking food home, and also getting takeaways.

Well at least everybody was full and the leftovers will be put to use maybe for lunches these coming few days. I decided to skip the beef kabobs and dh bbq'ed salmon chunks with a glaze on a fish tray. We had salad, asparagus and baked potatoes and (the kids) had apple pie after.

The kids just left, still early here.

Tbf… the Op posted as soon as her last guest left sounding pissed off and no mention or even a whiff of having a good time.

It must occur to you that 25 people
eating just 18 sausages, 14 burgers, half the potato salad, barely touching the potato salad and not even one halloumi skewer…. Would indicate that either

They are all on WLI
or
They didn’t like the food
