Is this enough food for a barbecue?

I’m having a barbecue for 24 people on Saturday. I haven’t hosted for this many before so can I check with those if you who are more experienced whether this is the right amount of food?

On the barbecue:

24 burgers
24 hot dogs

Prepared in advance and served cold:

50 buns
A large gammon joint
15 barbecue chicken drumsticks
15 plain drumsticks
A potato salad with lemon and garlic
Homemade coleslaw
A Caesar salad
Another type of vegan salad

Then for people arriving I’ll have a cheeseboard, crisps, dips, and sweets out.

Is it enough? Should I add a pasta salad?

I find that you can give people too much choice! I just stick to sausages and burgers these days. Having said that we were at a bbq recently and they did marinated pork loin steaks from Tes o I believe and they were so yummy. I usually do at lease x 4 salads (never a green salad as it’s not popular). I always do my potato salad the same as yours in olive oil, wine vinegar and Dijon mustard. Then I might do chicken pea and spring onion salad, carrot salad watermelon and feta etc.

Advocodo · 13/08/2026 13:01

Sorry should say chick pea and spring onion salad.

Good for you. Still intent on misreading and still projecting, claiming incorrectly umpteen times that posters are "upset" and saying pleasant things like:

"You seem to struggle to read."

Ah good, we’ve arrived at the part where posters who have been rude and vile begin to play the victim. It’s like night following day.

Fucking hell, OP.

You asked a question to the internet. A lot, not all, but a lot said they had hosted / been to BBQs where people had eaten significantly more than what you're supplying yet you still don't believe it. Absolutely, you know your pals better than anyone and, that being the case, do what you think is best but, canvassing the world wide web, it's been stated many times over that, for some parties, it simply wouldn't be enough 🤦🏼‍♀️ If you didn't want other people's take on it, why ask?

Yes, you may well have loads left over and there'll be an "I told you so" moment, but, similarly, had you catered what you were planning for a different group of people, there wouldn't have been enough food and the "I told you so" would have been the other way around.

You / your friends are as you are. The public, at large, is as it is.

If I was to put on what you were originally planning, for the first 24 people of our usual crowd, there wouldn't be anywhere near enough meat. So, in response to your direct question, all I can say is "no, I don't think it's enough" but you keep pushing back that you just can't believe people can eat that much. Some do. I've seen it. Lots of people have seen it.

🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

Must’ve taken you ages to write that.

MNHQ can read PMs. Just so you know.

Cool.

Do they get involved in verifying stuff? Would very much be an egg on face moment for a few posters, if so.

Why don’t you ask them? A nice little task for you. Keep you busy.

It's only 4 paragraphs.

The typing didn't take the time, it was waiting for PMs from elusive online pals that did it 😏

I am actually torn in this.

On the one hand, I am one to pursue (what I perceive as) justice, to the nth degree, so availing myself, here, is quite appealing.

I am also doing my damn hardest to procrastinate and avoid the real world after working myself into the ground over the last few weeks and having finally run out of steam to concentrate.

On the other hand, it is of course a ridiculous scenario (whichever side of the fence you fall on - accusing posters of some sort of co-ordinated coup or accepting, from a complete stranger, that she's actually an honest one... I don't want to ruin the surprise but it's the latter) and I am genuinely thinking about the poor sod at MNHQ who might get tasked with this.

What do you reckon? Maybe we need a bloke to sort it out for us 🤷🏼‍♀️

Rude and vile! I posted here to suggest you boil the hot dogs like a normal person on the stove, and that would make room for more burgers on the bbq.

You seem to like to post quavering pleas as your thread titles and then high-handedly refute any advice that does not involve a coleslaw recipe.

mulberrymilk · 11/08/2026 15:10

Boil the hot dogs for around 6 minutes in boiling water, as is tradtional, rather than wasting space cooking them on the bbq. You need to supply more than one burger per person.

Here is my rude, vile post.

Mine did involve a coleslaw recipe. Possibly twice. And I still got the cane.

Are we?

I'm not sure I could co-ordinate posts on a thread, with private messages, at such a rate.

The idea is pretty funny, though.

I might see if my new online "pals" (one of which I've never engaged with outside of this thread) are up for it.

I am up for it. LOL

OP, I find it hilarious that so many posters claim they would have more than one burger and sausage, if served in bread that's loads even without the sides.

My prediction is that you will have loads of food left over, do please update us after the barbie.

I wouldn't eat the bread, but I'd eat 2 burger patties and two butcher's sausages alongside some salad. I don't think I'm that unusual? I'd swap one burger patty out for a chicken drumstick as long as it was freshly cooked and hot off the BBQ.

No, absolutely. Enough bread for a hot dog and burger each but then, probably, half as many burgers again (for people to double up, nibble on, get dropped / burnt) and as many sausages again.

I'd usually start with a burger, then go back for a hot dog. Later on, when the wine has taken over, I'm making a beeline for the sausages (and anything else I can pick up to eat) every time I leave my seat / standing position!

Yeah, I’d definitely be able to eat more without the bread and rest of the carbs.

That's how I eat at a BBQ, and I'm sure I wouldn't be alone. I'm wanting 4 pieces of food from the BBQ, and you're only allowing for 2 per person. It doesn't really matter if there's lots of other food around that I don't/won't eat. Most people at a BBQ want to eat plenty of stuff off of the BBQ with a token bit of salad on the side. They don't want to simply fill up on bread etc. The highlight of a BBQ is the barbequed food, and that's what most people will eat the most of.

I agree, and you can get them reasonably priced frozen in places like Iceland.

If I was doing the menu for me I’d make it all seafood. Tuna steaks, king prawns, salmon, seafood boils. And a butterflied leg of lamb and sesame and honey chicken.

But when I did a quick survey amongst the four or five of my closest friends they all felt quite strongly that barbecues are for burgers and sausages. I might do the former one day with different friends.

I see what you’re saying but then I won’t have a burger or a sausage, I’m not keen on them and will have the chicken and salads, so I’m thinking that it will balance out.
