Is this enough food for a barbecue?

Theresip · 11/08/2026 12:51

I’m having a barbecue for 24 people on Saturday. I haven’t hosted for this many before so can I check with those if you who are more experienced whether this is the right amount of food?

On the barbecue:

24 burgers
24 hot dogs

Prepared in advance and served cold:

50 buns
A large gammon joint
15 barbecue chicken drumsticks
15 plain drumsticks
A potato salad with lemon and garlic
Homemade coleslaw
A Caesar salad
Another type of vegan salad

Then for people arriving I’ll have a cheeseboard, crisps, dips, and sweets out.

Is it enough? Should I add a pasta salad?

Are you all genuinely PMing each other and following the OP around the board because she’s rebuffed some of your suggestions? You’ve all made your points and attempted to goad and belittle her several times now.

Quitedark · 13/08/2026 09:35

But forget my suggestion of salmon
Too pricey

Are you genuinely trying to shame someone by implying they can’t afford to provide for their guests? Why are you bullying her?

Theresip · 13/08/2026 09:54

Quitedark · 13/08/2026 09:35

Oh yes… some of the guests that you’ve met “a couple of times”

How many times have you met them?

That is what they do. I think there are three of them. They PM each other about threads so they can all pile in. I’ve seen it numerous times.

It doesn’t matter on threads about barbecues. It’s a bit worrying with regards to their mental health but not a big deal, but they do it to women talking about their relationships and families etc. and it’s a disgrace. I think they must be the people for whom Mumsnet is their life and only social interaction.

I’m not wound up at all. The behaviour is a bit concerning though.

The behaviour on this thread has really descended op. Maybe people are jealous you’ve got friends? Feels fairly likely given some of the sniping and bitchiness.
Anyway, I hope you have a lovely time and your guests enjoy your generous spread.

Thank you very much.

It seems to be a little gang of them who PM each other and run around threads like gleeful kids. I have always assumed that it’s because they’ve got a lack of friends.

Ain't no running around here. I'm sat in my lazy-boy, sipping a cold one, while my many, many friends fan me and feed me grapes.

Thank you! The forecast here has it dropping to 21 degrees for Saturday which I think will be nice

Good grief, why are you having a bbq when it's so bloody cold!?

Joke.

Terfarina · 13/08/2026 12:23

OP, I find it hilarious that so many posters claim they would have more than one burger and sausage, if served in bread that's loads even without the sides.

My prediction is that you will have loads of food left over, do please update us after the barbie.

Excuse me? This is the second thread in a few days about this same bbq. It would be hard to miss if you had read the first one.

Here are her 174 delightful responses to posters trying to offer help and reassurance on her last one. It does leave a lasting memory.

I think it’s loads too. It would be an exceptional appetite to be able to eat two burgers and two sausages with buns, plus pork, chicken and sides.

I am going to get some sausages to increase the numbers and buy some skewers, but I am certain I am heading towards having far too much left over, as always. I’m definitely not going to double it.

It’s like you’ve rumbled a state secret. Why can a person not post two threads about a barbecue? 😂 The best part so far is definitely still the fury that I’m not inviting my partner, or any man, to do it for me.

I'm not sure I could co-ordinate posts on a thread, with private messages, at such a rate.

The idea is pretty funny, though.

I might see if my new online "pals" (one of which I've never engaged with outside of this thread) are up for it.

There are deleted posts, perhaps from when you have all indulged in a glass too many, openly talking about sending each other PMs so that you can all come on threads.

It’s not the first time I’ve seen it either.

Good for you. Still intent on misreading and still projecting, claiming incorrectly umpteen times that posters are "upset" and saying pleasant things like:

"You seem to struggle to read."

Fucking hell, OP.

You asked a question to the internet. A lot, not all, but a lot said they had hosted / been to BBQs where people had eaten significantly more than what you're supplying yet you still don't believe it. Absolutely, you know your pals better than anyone and, that being the case, do what you think is best but, canvassing the world wide web, it's been stated many times over that, for some parties, it simply wouldn't be enough 🤦🏼‍♀️ If you didn't want other people's take on it, why ask?

Yes, you may well have loads left over and there'll be an "I told you so" moment, but, similarly, had you catered what you were planning for a different group of people, there wouldn't have been enough food and the "I told you so" would have been the other way around.

You / your friends are as you are. The public, at large, is as it is.

If I was to put on what you were originally planning, for the first 24 people of our usual crowd, there wouldn't be anywhere near enough meat. So, in response to your direct question, all I can say is "no, I don't think it's enough" but you keep pushing back that you just can't believe people can eat that much. Some do. I've seen it. Lots of people have seen it.

🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

You entirely misinterpreted the gist of the majority of people's comments on that.

Doesn't it say who deleted posts are from? In which case, you'd be able to see they're not from me. Can't say if they're from my purported friends because I'm not entirely sure who they're meant to be!

This reminds me of that moment in the action drama thing I've been watching, recently... The A-Ha moment when they think they've caught the drug smugglers - they stop the car but it's the wrong one and it blows up, killing the woman on the side of the goodies.

For clarity, I'm referring to the A-Ha moment being wrong.

And I don't think anyone is dying.

Unless you undercook those hot dog sausages (which, by the way, if they're actual massive frankfurters, look mint... If they're the tinned things (as many assumed) then weird choice for a BBQ).
