Waiter dropped a pizza on me and caused a burn and ruined my dress (Joe browns) what is the least you would expect?

this happened yesterday. We just arrived in Pisa and went for lunch. The waiter brought the food over and as he was leaning over an entire, burning hot pizza slid off the plate and all down me. He apologised and started crying so went inside. I have a nasty burn on my tummy, plus it ruined my dress, bag and trainers. We were given a bill for the full amount, and we queried it with the manager. What would you expect in this situation?

I mean yeah, it kind of seems that way. She didn’t eat yet paid for her food, so presumably they brought a new pizza which just sat there feeling unwanted and unloved. Surely, SURELY, OP, you at least took the whole untouched shiny new non burny pizza home with you for lunch the next day?!

If you were in the UK you'd sue them. I suspected and am correct, it's similar in Italy Immediate Action Steps
Get medical help: Go to a hospital emergency room (Pronto Soccorso) immediately to get an official medical certificate (referto or certificato medico) documenting your burn.
Gather evidence: Take clear photos of the accident scene, the hazard that caused the burn, and your injuries.
Collect witness details: Write down the names and contact information of anyone who saw the incident.
Report the business: File a formal written incident report with the business management before you leave.

would you seriously want to attempt to run a Italian legal case from the uk for a pizza burn and a dress?!? (am I the only person who doesn’t know what joe brown is as I thought it was an Irish department store 🤣)

We asked for a discount of at least my share of the bill but they refused, which I found surprising

Doesn't surprise me tbh ... you were foreigners on holiday to them and they knew full well you had no real recourse for any damages, etc ... not like you're going to stay in the country for an extended period and pursue them in small claims court.

That will be Brown Thomas in Dublin 🤣

They won’t give a fuck. My sister got badly burnt by a coffee spill in McDonald’s there and they could not have cared less.

I think further upthread, for a reason I can't fathom, there's a lot of minimising of the burn OP suffered. If that was hot cheese - full of fat - it could be very hot indeed.

I agree that hot coffee is really dangerous - it can be near boiling point and if it soaks into clothing it stays on the skin for a long time.

I have no idea why pps consider burns like this to be a joke. I suspect it's the MN silly season where pps will argue black is white just for laughs. I suspect that if the burn victim had been a child there would have been a pious outcry, though.

Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear that, must’ve been awful. Xx

I'm not sure how clothing can be irreversibly "ruined" by food though, and I'm not aware of a case in which that has happened.
It definitely can. I've had clothes ruined by cooking-oil splashes that just didn't come out even when I treated them; by things that have stained (tomato, raspberries, beetroot), and again resisted treatment; and I remember a friend having a fish dish in a butter sauce dripped/sloshed on her by waiting staff and she had to throw out her skirt (denim) as it just wouldn't come out.

It’s like a big oil stain, will soak it properly when home x

What did you actually do? I’m still confused about you sitting there not eating while everyone else tucked in. Did they even replace your food or expect you to scrape it off your clothes?

They brought napkins so I could scrape it off my clothes! By now kiss and she were tucking in

Cherrytree86 · 12/08/2026 08:23

You should have smiled, told everyone it’s fine, scraped off whatever bits of pizza you could from your clothing and ate that so as not to cause a fuss, and then leave paying the bill in full plus tip

My trick for getting oil stains out of clothing is to put a liberal amount of cornflour on it and leave it for several hours/overnight. Then give it a good run in the washing machine. Works well for me.

Anearlyone · 12/08/2026 08:34

The idea that you sat there covered in wet food stains, in agony with a serious burn…. And your family were served their food and tucked in - bizarre. The other diners must have been… intrigued

Anearlyone · 12/08/2026 08:35

Did you seek medical attention for the serious burn @snoopywife ?

after your family had finished up their meals of course

Pixi365 · 12/08/2026 08:56

No way would I be paying for a dropped pizza, god what nasty place was this? They should of gave you a new one on the house and then probably a free drink to if they didn’t want to pay for the whole tables food. I would of refused to pay asked them to call the police so you had proof of everything including the burn you would now be sueing them for the lack of respect and empathy shown.
to be fair though if a waiter came with paper towels to scrap my food of myself so I could eat it I would of probably left there and then with the party. Without touching any of the food I’d leave enough for drinks and that’s it. That’s just disrespectful and makes me question if anything is dropped in the kitchen do they just serve it anyway as they think it’s exceptable to expect a customer to scrap food up and eat it. Gross.

Yeah I can’t imagine just scoffing my food while someone at my table had been burned!

So bad, so very bad, that she sat their writhing in agony covered in pizza until her family had finished up their plates

Terfarina · 12/08/2026 11:46

they didn't give you a new pizza, having dropped the first one - and then expected you to pay for the pizza you couldn't eat as dropped! that's shocking!

I got old grease out with wd40. Test a patch first, leave it for about half an hour then some sites say to put bicarb on it but I skipped that and put washing up liquid straight on. Then wash it as hot as it can take. Worked great on t-shirts. Can repeat if it doesn't work first time.

Thank you, yes, that was exactly it. There was a parking area for the business and we were parked there, just for the time it took for our clothes to be washed and dried.

I thought so. I don't know why someone was trying to pick apart your story!
