Waiter dropped a pizza on me and caused a burn and ruined my dress (Joe browns) what is the least you would expect?

this happened yesterday. We just arrived in Pisa and went for lunch. The waiter brought the food over and as he was leaning over an entire, burning hot pizza slid off the plate and all down me. He apologised and started crying so went inside. I have a nasty burn on my tummy, plus it ruined my dress, bag and trainers. We were given a bill for the full amount, and we queried it with the manager. What would you expect in this situation?

I just wouldn't have paid. I was once served raw (actually bleeding) chicken in Greece. I told the waiter and he shrugged and said "so?". I never paid despite his threats to call the police.

Waiter will be crying because you could sue the company, food shouldn"t be coming to the table while hot enough to cause burns, in that scenario the waiter would almost certainly lose their job as they carried the too hot food to a table but the company would have to cough up compensation.

Don't be ridiculous. Have you ever been served fajitas or similar sizzling dishes?

Cleaning bills paid for clothing.

I'm not sure how clothing can be irreversibly "ruined" by food though, and I'm not aware of a case in which that has happened.

It definitely can. I've had clothes ruined by cooking-oil splashes that just didn't come out even when I treated them; by things that have stained (tomato, raspberries, beetroot), and again resisted treatment; and I remember a friend having a fish dish in a butter sauce dripped/sloshed on her by waiting staff and she had to throw out her skirt (denim) as it just wouldn't come out.

Joe Browns dresses are GOPPING. I think the waiter was sending yyou a message

I am unsure how a pizza can land on you for long enough to burn you through fabric

@principalskinna

who cares what you think about Joe browns dresses?? What makes you think that’s relevant?

Pashazade · 11/08/2026 16:04

They won’t give a fuck. My sister got badly burnt by a coffee spill in McDonald’s there and they could not have cared less. Even on a human level no one gave a toss. I’m mean I’d have expected a free meal at a minimum in your situation.

Crying? Ffs, where do we get these men?

I was a waitress when I was a teenager and I once dropped a bowl of nachos and guacamole on a toddlers head. I cried.

Kid was fine thankfully 🤣

I've had olive oil and balsamic dish dumped on my lap onto jeans. No burn obviously
They took my meal off the bill and offered to pay cleaning.
Hopefully they also changed the silly wooden planks used for serving such dishes

OP - ignore people being mean about you referring to your tummy. At least you didn't use my least favourite word: belly. Ugh.

The problem is, what most people call their tummy is their abdomen. The stomach is higher up - just below the ribs??

A friend of mine was at the doc's and she described a pain in her abdomen. The doctor was really snooty and said 'Don't say abdomen - you mean your tummy!'

Stupid man. You can't win, can you?

I've noticed a lot of really unprovoked nastiness on MN over the past week or so.

I think it must be the heat getting to people.

Some horrendously 'primary school' catty remarks on here.

Do these people seriously judge other women by the labels they wear? Jeez.

That's ridiculous! I know that, as I mentioned in a post upthread, HCPs are trained to say "tummy" instead of "abdomen" because their patients are likely to be too stupid to understand the latter, but to actually correct a patient using the right word is insane!

nocoolnamesleft · 11/08/2026 16:25

For future reference, don’t use ice in burns, if anything it increases tissue damage. Ask for access to cool running water.

Cannesdo · 11/08/2026 16:30

The restaurant manager has treated you appallingly @snoopywife
I feel sorry for the waiter as he didn’t intend to hurt you and accidents happen.
Photos and a review are the way forward.
Thank goodness it wasn’t a child that was burnt.

I know! My friend was struck a bit dumb by it.

She said he seemed to resent it - as if she was trying to show she knew as much as he did. What a twit!

I think further upthread, for a reason I can't fathom, there's a lot of minimising of the burn OP suffered. If that was hot cheese - full of fat - it could be very hot indeed.

I agree that hot coffee is really dangerous - it can be near boiling point and if it soaks into clothing it stays on the skin for a long time.

I have no idea why pps consider burns like this to be a joke. I suspect it's the MN silly season where pps will argue black is white just for laughs. I suspect that if the burn victim had been a child there would have been a pious outcry, though.

What did you actually do? I’m still confused about you sitting there not eating while everyone else tucked in. Did they even replace your food or expect you to scrape it off your clothes?

I would have had hysterics (I'm good at that) until the police were called and they gave me a full refund for making me wear a Pizza.
