Waiter dropped a pizza on me and caused a burn and ruined my dress (Joe browns) what is the least you would expect?

this happened yesterday. We just arrived in Pisa and went for lunch. The waiter brought the food over and as he was leaning over an entire, burning hot pizza slid off the plate and all down me. He apologised and started crying so went inside. I have a nasty burn on my tummy, plus it ruined my dress, bag and trainers. We were given a bill for the full amount, and we queried it with the manager. What would you expect in this situation?

So what actually happened when you queried it?

catsflorafauna · 11/08/2026 09:37

Did they fill in an accident report form or offer medical assistance?

Yetone · 11/08/2026 09:01

is the stain tomato? If so leave in sunshine and it will disappear.

Yes a few hours of bright sun on a tomato stain is like magic.

PeterRabbitsWhiskers · 11/08/2026 09:38

An apology, a free meal and claim on travel insurance for any losses.

Terfarina · 11/08/2026 09:38

Were they aware you had been burned? That’s the biggest issue imo.

how bad was the damage to the dress - if you were able to stay for the meal presumably not disastrous?

my husband has a pizza van, I work in it sometimes and am very messy so get covered in sauce and occasionally cheeses and toppings. I’ve never had a problem getting stains off clothes or footwear

gingercat02 · 11/08/2026 09:39

Free meal at the very least. Have you seen a doctor? Payment for that and some compensation for your clothes. Are your shoes and bag ruined or will they clean up?

chocoluv · 11/08/2026 09:39

Aww I feel sorry for the waiter.

I would at the very least expect a free meal/money off.

If the stain didn’t come out after washing and using vanish on my bag, dress and trainers then I’d be sending them photos but I can’t see them giving much more than a voucher, if that.

I would be telling the waiter to not worry about it etc, everyone has had accidents when learning how to waiter.

ShowOfHands · 11/08/2026 09:39

I wouldn't have expected to pay for the meal.

Dress you can air in the sunshine and bung in the washing machine as normal.

Youhadrambledonfor18pages · 11/08/2026 09:36

You mention Joe Browns like it’s Dior!

Obviously I’d expect an apology and a free meal but if it was a tourist trap restaurant then I wouldn’t hold my breath for either.

She shouldn't have to pay for a meal that ended up in her lap though! And I doubt she could help making a fuss when the hot pizza burned her

I assumed they didn’t make her eat it from her lap and got her a replacement pizza.

I would expect money off the bill but I doubt they made her pay for a pizza that had been dropped.

rubyslippers · 11/08/2026 08:52

I would expect an apology and a free meal
id certainly ask for cleaning and those costs
i hope the burn isn’t too bad
not sure why the waiter was crying …

Edited

Crying from embarrassment. Id expect the bill waived t least but tbh if it was that bad id have left immediately not paying for what had already been had and got myself cleaned up and not stayed for the rest.

I think @Youhadrambledonfor18pages was meaning tomato sauce on a machine washable Joe browns dress doesn’t really warrant a name check in the title - if it was Dior, yes it would. Especially under the amazing steer of Johnathan Anderson.

SurferRona · 11/08/2026 09:45

God, I can’t wait til September.

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 11/08/2026 08:59

Thanks, waiter crying now.

Is this a name change fail?

PurpleThistle7 · 11/08/2026 09:49

I would have expected the meal to be free but also if it was that bad a burn surely you'd have left to seek medical attention after this happened anyway?

if I was working at that restaurant I'd have called you a taxi to have medical attention and given you a voucher to come back the next day or whenever for a free meal.

I waitressed for years and once dropped an entire tray of beers on a customer's head - someone pushed their chair back behind me and caught my knees and I unbalanced it. We comped the beers and everyone laughed at me (kindly) and that was the end of that.

BagginBilbo · 11/08/2026 09:53

Your trainers and bag were ruined by a pizza?

Erm...okay...

MyArtfulGreySloth · 11/08/2026 09:55

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 11/08/2026 08:59

Thanks, waiter crying now.

Are you op and forgot to name change?

BIWI · 11/08/2026 09:58

Can't name change on a thread, so possibly socking?

I find it hard to believe that a pizza could actually cause a burn. And your dress will not be ruined, nor will your bag/trainers. They can all be cleaned.

Naurrr · 11/08/2026 10:01

@Realitybitesyerbum @MyArtfulGreySloth it's a well known internet joke, but usually about a kid crying now, not a waiter.

FaceEatingLeopard · 11/08/2026 10:04

🤔

IJustMight · 11/08/2026 10:04

Unblushingly · 11/08/2026 08:58

At the very least! I hope you didn’t pay the bill??!

Yes, does the burn need medical attention?

We were at a restaurant in Cornwall once and a waitress somehow dropped an entire bottle of red wine on DH/the table. Front of house were incredibly apologetic, meal was free, plus they gave us a voucher for a free meal for four at their sister restaurant, and paid for dry cleaning of DH’s white shirt (which never in fact recovered, but they tried).

That is the correct response

I'm staggered they still presented you with a bill!

WhatsUpWithGene · 11/08/2026 10:05

Funkyfoxy · 11/08/2026 08:57

I would be telling the waiter not to worry and it's ok as was an accident and not make a fuss as he would probably be worried about losing his job.

Of course…

I would pay extra for my meal, give the waiter an enormous tip and pay for him to have a pizza and drinks after his shift and beg him for forgiveness.

I would also make sure I apologised to the
manager for making a scene if I had reacted in any way after being burned and covered in pizza.

It is important to be kind after all and always put others first, that’s an important thing I learned on here from so many posters who are always so focused on being kind no matter what the situation is.

NullaEffugium · 11/08/2026 10:05

Accidents happen. I presume they replaced the pizza for free with another one you ate. I wouldn’t make a fuss, but then I have been a waitress so I know it’s not an easy job to do.

Youhadrambledonfor18pages · 11/08/2026 10:06

chedderland · 11/08/2026 09:40

Snob

How so?

Deadleaves77 · 11/08/2026 10:12

I would expect an apology and a free pizza. I probably wouldn't expect dry cleaning tbh

However the dress is washable, and Im suprised the burns are that bad from pizza through a dress, have you sought medical attention?
