Waiter dropped a pizza on me and caused a burn and ruined my dress (Joe browns) what is the least you would expect?

this happened yesterday. We just arrived in Pisa and went for lunch. The waiter brought the food over and as he was leaning over an entire, burning hot pizza slid off the plate and all down me. He apologised and started crying so went inside. I have a nasty burn on my tummy, plus it ruined my dress, bag and trainers. We were given a bill for the full amount, and we queried it with the manager. What would you expect in this situation?

I would expect an apology and a free meal
id certainly ask for cleaning and those costs
i hope the burn isn’t too bad
not sure why the waiter was crying …

Atschjvkbgj · 11/08/2026 08:53

Waiter will be crying because it was an accident

Overthebow · 11/08/2026 08:54

You should get a nasty burn checked out. I’d expect the meal to be free.

feemcgee · 11/08/2026 08:54

you shouldn’t have to pay and they should give you money for the dress. Hope you’re ok.

ChasingTheDuck · 11/08/2026 08:55

Full meal to be free and dry cleaning costs covered.

Funkyfoxy · 11/08/2026 08:57

I would be telling the waiter not to worry and it's ok as was an accident and not make a fuss as he would probably be worried about losing his job.

chedderland · 11/08/2026 08:57

It’s absolutely outrageous you were charged in full after that. I hope you didn’t pay it. They should all cover the amount for your dress. They could be liable for injury so are probably trying to downplay it. Please leave a bad review.

At the very least! I hope you didn’t pay the bill??!

Yes, does the burn need medical attention?

We were at a restaurant in Cornwall once and a waitress somehow dropped an entire bottle of red wine on DH/the table. Front of house were incredibly apologetic, meal was free, plus they gave us a voucher for a free meal for four at their sister restaurant, and paid for dry cleaning of DH’s white shirt (which never in fact recovered, but they tried).

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 11/08/2026 08:59

Thanks, waiter crying now.

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 11/08/2026 09:00

Absolutely would expect not to be charged for my meal after that experience. But suspect in Pisa they would assume little comeback from tourists, it’s shabby behaviour, hope you are ok x

Yetone · 11/08/2026 09:01

is the stain tomato? If so leave in sunshine and it will disappear.

JacknDiane · 11/08/2026 09:01

Eh?

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 11/08/2026 09:01

How bad were the burns? I agree with free meal and dry cleaning costs.

ThatJadeLion · 11/08/2026 09:03

I would at the very least expect free desserts and an apology or the drinks knocking off the bill. I know it was an accident, but if I dropped hot pizza causing a burn, I would be very apologetic.

Fedupoffeelingthisway111 · 11/08/2026 09:03

Free meal all the way.....

likeitshard · 11/08/2026 09:06

I once had hot gravy spilt on me at a wedding they covered dry cleaning costs. I’d expect meal comped in your situation plus dry cleaning

KimberleyMilkado · 11/08/2026 09:10

Presumably the burn wasn’t so bad that it put you off a replacement pizza or do you mean they charged you for the one they dropped?

ErrolTheDragon · 11/08/2026 09:12

If it’s irreparably ruined any of the items mentioned I’d be pushing for some compensation for them.

well no, in reality I’d probably suck it up like a polite wuss.

She shouldn't have to pay for a meal that ended up in her lap though! And I doubt she could help making a fuss when the hot pizza burned her

Not make a fuss?
How bloody British with a stiff upper lip.😁

Accidents happen.
Get good advice about how best to clean your clothes.
I would expect an apology, not to have to pay for the meal and a vouchure to eat there again.

Kimmers4334 · 11/08/2026 09:31

I would expect your meal to be free, dry cleaning costs at a minimum and ideally I’d like them to pay the fee for getting the burn checked. It was an accident but such a careless one I’m not surprised the waiter cried, imagine if boiling hot sauce or cheese had landed on your face or a child. The clothes are one thing (even though you can reasonably expect to go to dinner without someone else getting food on you) but the burn makes it a bit more of a serious mistake

ShutupLwren · 11/08/2026 09:32

Being British I hope you apologised to him profusely!

Genuinely hope the burn is ok 💐

angelos02 · 11/08/2026 09:35

Did you stay and have a meal - while burned and covered in pizza? I'm confused.

Youhadrambledonfor18pages · 11/08/2026 09:36

You mention Joe Browns like it’s Dior!

Obviously I’d expect an apology and a free meal but if it was a tourist trap restaurant then I wouldn’t hold my breath for either.
