Waiter dropped a pizza on me and caused a burn and ruined my dress (Joe browns) what is the least you would expect?

this happened yesterday. We just arrived in Pisa and went for lunch. The waiter brought the food over and as he was leaning over an entire, burning hot pizza slid off the plate and all down me. He apologised and started crying so went inside. I have a nasty burn on my tummy, plus it ruined my dress, bag and trainers. We were given a bill for the full amount, and we queried it with the manager. What would you expect in this situation?

I would have demanded an ice pack and refused to pay the bill.

UrOutdoors · 11/08/2026 14:46

The “least I would expect” is an apology which is what you got. That doesn’t mean I think that’s what they should’ve done though. They should’ve given you a free meal.

troothfairy · 11/08/2026 14:49

I still need to know whether you got a fresh pizza and if it just sat on your plate untouched while everyone else was eating

How hot does a pizza have to be to cause a nasty burn through a dress?

I think it was the melted cheese that burned me

In the uk in a basic pub someone put really hot sticky toffee pudding by my one year old (it wasn't his) he reached out stuck his fingers on it burning his fingers i grabbed his hand stuck it in my mouth to get the toffee off burning my mouth and glutening myself in the process (really no idea what possessed me but there was no napkins or water and a burn was forming visibly in seconds) the manager was straight over with ice water free ice cream and free desserts for the table he was full of apologies despite the fact that it was partly our own fault! On their end it shouldn't have been sent out burning hot or put at the wrong end of the table near a one year old on ours we should have noticed moved it or been more proactive and I really shouldn't have stuck it in my mouth 😂

But still really poor show from joe browns I hope your burn heals soon

An ice pack wouldn’t of helped

It's got nothing to do with Joe Browns. That's where the OP bought her dress. This happened at a restaurant/pizzeria in Pisa, Italy.

itsgettingweird · 11/08/2026 14:57

How is the burn on your stomach if you were wearing a dress?

Did you remain and eat your meal hence why charged for it?

Because if you chose to stay rather than get it treated the burn will be because you didn’t get it treated with cold water immediately.

I would expect the meal to be free.

Nothing else if you chose to stay and eat.

We asked for a discount of at least my share of the bill but they refused, which I found surprising

How can you charge for a pizza your staff dropped on her though? It's not like she'd have been able to eat it.

G5000 · 11/08/2026 15:00

I might have missed the detail but did you get a new pizza at least, or did they charge for the one they dropped?

itsgettingweird · 11/08/2026 15:00

Sorry when I pressed for OP posts there weren’t any. Once I’d posted and pressed again it said 7? So I read them and see you had updated!

sorry

Give it a rest. She can call it a tummy if she wants, far out.

It’s definitely a burn. On my tummy 🤗

Ideally:
Full meal paid
Reimbursement of the clothing items / cleaning fee
Restaurant pays for a medical check

However I imagine they would take that all out of the waiters pay check so I’d probably just ask for the meal to be free. But they don’t have to and you’re not going to become a regular so they won’t do that. Then they’ll just accept the bad review and won’t care.

That’s exactly what we thought!

@snoopywifeif it helps I once went to a restaurant where the waiter tripped and swilled me with a glass of Prosecco. Right across the face. He went to replace it and did the exact same thing again - whole glass right in my eyes.

THEN HE BILLED ME FOR BOTH GLASSES.

Whaaat? Oh that’s not good. They billed for the food ordered, including the pizza that I ended up wearing!

So you keep saying.

Was it a standard tourist restaurant? If so, I suspect you won't get any joy. A lot of tourists can be appalling when they're on holidays - complaining and wanting discounts. Of course, you have a real gripe, but I suspect that the restaurant is inured to tourist complaints, because there are so many bad faith actors.

Unless you were negotiating in Italian?

I can do a bit of basic Italian which I did when we ordered, but not good enough to negotiate. Need to get my Duolingo on x

So they didn't even bring you another pizza? Did they expect you to eat the one you'd just worn?

Noorandapples · 11/08/2026 15:08

100% wouldn't have paid, calling police would have backfired on them. You should leave scathing reviews online.

PeopleWatching17 · 11/08/2026 15:08

Funkyfoxy · 11/08/2026 08:57

I would be telling the waiter not to worry and it's ok as was an accident and not make a fuss as he would probably be worried about losing his job.

Me too.

Sereine · 11/08/2026 12:02

Take a photo of the injury and the damaged clothes, check out the replacement cost, and write to the restaurant saying you want compensation for damages and the injury. Ask them for details of their insurers.

Also leave reviews everywhere detailing their shitty attitude to injuring you.

We are going to leave reviews, the photos are a good idea as well. Thank u. X

Stomach. Is it a burn or just a mark?

You wouldn’t be able to see a burn on your stomach unless you had X-ray vision. If you’re desperate for a technically accurate word, abdomen is probably the right one.
