Waiter dropped a pizza on me and caused a burn and ruined my dress (Joe browns) what is the least you would expect?

this happened yesterday. We just arrived in Pisa and went for lunch. The waiter brought the food over and as he was leaning over an entire, burning hot pizza slid off the plate and all down me. He apologised and started crying so went inside. I have a nasty burn on my tummy, plus it ruined my dress, bag and trainers. We were given a bill for the full amount, and we queried it with the manager. What would you expect in this situation?

thank you all for the replies, here’s what happened.

they didn’t offer anything. They billed for the full amount (I didn’t eat anything in the end) and we reminded them whst happened and asked for a discount. They refused, got aggressive and threatened to call police!

also I was really nice to the waiter when it happened, told him accidents happen and not to worry, etc, so I wasn’t arsey as such, I just found it surprising and upsetting that it happened, and they could see the damaged items so I thought they would offer a discount. But no …..

That's outrageous.
First, I assume you're never going back and you'll write honest reviews online?
Second, I'd expect

  • an immediate offer of ice/escort to the kitchen to try to dab the stains off/genuinely meant queries as to whether you're OK/staff to go out to a pharmacy for burn remedy, or a suggestion that you go and they'll reimburse the cost
  • a full and sincere apology from the manager
  • dinner on the house (maybe a replacement for the dropped pizza as a doggy bag)
  • IF you agreed to stay, complimentary puddings/coffees/dessert wines
  • repayment for dry-cleaning and/or the equivalent of replacing the ruined clothes, bag and shoes. And for those making 'hilarious' comments about Joe Brown clothes, and those saying the stain will wash out, the first lot of you are fucking snobs and playground cool-girls and the rest, realistically, greasy stains like cooked cheese and things made with oil very often don't wash out properly and will leave grease marks.

EDITED to add in another point

Why wouldn’t you? It gives an indication of cost.

Hence you might mention it if it was designer but not if it’s average like Joe Browns.

Presumably they were waiting outside the launderette (in their campervan) for their clothes to finish washing/drying? Would it have been any different if they'd been waiting inside the launderette with the campervan parked outside?

Thank you, yes, that was exactly it. There was a parking area for the business and we were parked there, just for the time it took for our clothes to be washed and dried.

Take lots of pictures. Request medical advice from GP for healing if you get blisters. Give a couple more days, contact no win no fee solicitor-they need to request cctv for your case before it’s deleted likely a month, you will win they have not followed the legal health and safety procedure. Pretty basic tbh.

they should have filled in accident report form within 24 hours,
sent to RIDDOR,
offered you medical assistance, burn shield etc at the time of incident.

you will get a pay out. Shocking really.

This is in Italy

Ideally:
Full meal paid
Reimbursement of the clothing items / cleaning fee
Restaurant pays for a medical check

However I imagine they would take that all out of the waiters pay check so I’d probably just ask for the meal to be free. But they don’t have to and you’re not going to become a regular so they won’t do that. Then they’ll just accept the bad review and won’t care.

you’re not going to become a regular so they won’t do that. Then they’ll just accept the bad review and won’t care.
Hopefully though, others who might go there (even just a few times on holiday) might read the reviews and go elsewhere in case it happens to them.

Was it a standard tourist restaurant? If so, I suspect you won't get any joy. A lot of tourists can be appalling when they're on holidays - complaining and wanting discounts. Of course, you have a real gripe, but I suspect that the restaurant is inured to tourist complaints, because there are so many bad faith actors.

Unless you were negotiating in Italian?

Please. Staff who saw what happened would know they couldn't possibly put that down to the OP being 'appalling' and wanting a discount for nothing.

Oooooh right! Sorry not much you can do. Leave a negative review.

Why not? I don’t get your point at all, Joe Browns dresses may be £60-£100 and that is a more expensive dress than you’d get from somewhere like New Look or Primark. I’d be annoyed either way but I’d be more annoyed if it was a fairly expensive dress. Maybe the cost difference of £50 is not worth mentioning to you, but it’s not weird to indicate that this wasn’t a cheap throw away dress. It doesn’t matter that it’s not designer because saying where she got the dress she is still demonstrating the cost. What you’re actually saying is that the dress is not worth enough to mention. I disagree and clearly so does OP who is upset

Livpool · 11/08/2026 13:19

I can’t believe they didn’t reduce the bill! Absolutely disgraceful

Yes a few hours of bright sun on a tomato stain is like magic.

Can confirm this worked on a stain on duvet from tomato based vomit.

I would expect an apology and a free meal
id certainly ask for cleaning and those costs
i hope the burn isn’t too bad
not sure why the waiter was crying …

Edited

You’re not sure why was crying? because he knew all the fuss that would be made over a genuine accident

principalskinna · 11/08/2026 13:38

@SpaceRaccoon they are disgusting though

principalskinna · 11/08/2026 13:38

The pizza burned through fabric. Come ON

And then what did you do?

I hoped you kicked up a fuss? That’s what I’d have done, but then I’m post menopause and no fucks to give.

Please tell me you didn’t pay the bill and slink away?

Rewis · 11/08/2026 13:44

They should have offered your meal for free and offfer to pay for drycleaning.
However, they relay on tourist walkins as customers so therefore they have no insentive to do the right thing. You won't be coming back and your Tripadvisor review won't make a difference since most people just walk-in without research.

For some of us, Joe browns is the most expensive we could ever afford. What a thoroughly nasty comment

I never thought JB would be so divisive!

We paid but we didn’t slink, my husband was fuming and a scene had been made, but thankfully by the staff and not us! Im just thankful It wasn’t one of the kids, is the only way to look at it really.

Wash it with some vanish and leave in the sun to dry and the stain will come out. I would not have expected and would have refused to pay for the meal. If they’d have threatened the police I would have said to tell them to go to the hospital because that’s where you’re going to get the burned checked, because assuming you’re not exaggerating that burn does sound serious/large enough to warrant medical attention.

“Classes” as a verb should be “classifies.” I think it’s you who needs the dictionary.

Oh dear 🤦🏻‍♀️

ScholesPanda · 11/08/2026 13:58

You did what I would have done, except I might have told them to call the police. Italy isn't a third world cup try, it has health and safety and consumer protection laws just like we do.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people have such a low opinion of themselves that others can do practically anything to them and they'll suck it up (not you OP, but some other PPs).

Give it a rest. She can call it a tummy if she wants, far out.

If PP is being pedantic the stomach is an actual specific internal organ, tummy is a general term to indicate the abdomen so tummy is better here!

HCPs always say "tummy" to patients because they think we're too stupid to understand abdomen. I hate that, as I regard it as baby-speak. I don't want to be addressed as though I'm a toddler.

There's oil on the pizzas in Italy. That would burn through fabric and hurt!
