Another heatwave coming.
Are we all ready for heatwave number 5.

You see people flicking ciggies out their cars. It’s madness. Have a bit of common sense during a heatwave

I’m sick of watering my garden, it takes me an hour each evening. However much I put on, it’s all wilting by 11 the next day 😭

Sounds like it might be a bit of a waste of water then?

SoftandQuiet · 09/08/2026 18:59

As someone who is not a sun worshiper I've actually enjoyed it to an extent. I'm looking forward to the contrast when the autumn/ winter comes though. I've been disappointed the past few years when we only get a couple of frosts the whole winter, it's so strange.

We used to get snowed in every winter in the 90s. The summers were the same as this.

Where?.

Nowhere in the UK in the 90s were people getting snowed in in every winter and having insanely hot summers. .

You do know there are records of the weather?

Shinyhappyapple · 09/08/2026 21:04

@isthismylifenow
that is indeed mad weather !

@PurpleCoo
Is the outdoor pool your own or do you go to a lido? Sounds lovely.

Overall I think I’ve become accustomed to the hotter temperatures and have a routine to keep as cool as possible. I’m able to do this because I no longer work though. And I really don’t like it when it gets over 30°. I think I’ve picked UK holidays well this year though as we were in the Lake District in the heatwave about 4 weeks ago, where it was a lot cooler than at home, and I’m off to Devon tomorrow where we are forecast sun and low-mid 20s which sounds perfect, as opposed to 30°+ in the midlands .

I agree with everyone’s concerns for the environment and also feel for those in unsuitable housing.

There are many people I know with aircons, they have purchased either last year or this year to combat the heat inside their homes.

Im going to purchase some outside window suckers to stop the sunlight on one room - as its heated up all afternoon and the window suckers would stop this happening

Can you tell me more about the window suckers?

Where do you live @fryfryfry? Summers in the 90s weren’t like this where I live (midlands).

The planet is dying.

Earth will exist long after humans go extinct; I doubt we will last longer than dinosaurs.

Netcurtainnelly · 09/08/2026 21:22

Yes bring it on. Fab Summer. Soon be Autumn so make the most of it. Already the nights are drawing in.

PurpleCoo · 09/08/2026 21:23

@Shinyhappyapple gosh no, not my own pool. It's at a private members gym, so luckily not as busy as a public lido

It is very lovely indeed. I have half a dozen gyms that are closer, but none with an outdoor pool and sun loungers, so happy to travel for it

SadiraOfTyr · 09/08/2026 21:34

I don’t mind the heat, although that one week of 40C every day was trying.

The lack of rain though is seriously concerning - it’s rained twice here since mid-June, both times for less than 30 minutes. Everything is dead and dry on the commons, even bracken. And the trees are starting to show signs of water stress. We are incredibly lucky not to have had a major fire yet but it’s just a matter of time before some complete idiot sets fire to the commons with a disposable barbecue.

HopefulBeliever · 09/08/2026 21:35

Yes - am off to the north (Scandinavia) where the forecast tells me it’s cooler than it will be here.

Each wave is less intense, at least in the areas it affects? This one will be mainly South/South East?

ClaudiaWrinklemum · 09/08/2026 21:37

Bloody hate it. My favourite time of year is the beginning of September to the end of December, so I’m consoling myself there’s not much longer to go now.

If there is short grass on the verge and it has a bit of green in it it should be OK.

Where do you live that grass is still green??

Purplebeech · 09/08/2026 21:41

Just checked my local forecast tomorrow and cannot wait for the lofty high of 16 with feeling between 7 and 13 😢. House is about 16. In low mood with the grey day after day. It’s the light I am struggling missing, even with our long days, and I’d be happy even just a few degrees warmer.

I would hate the English heatwave though especially feel for those of you with dogs.

Happyjoe · 09/08/2026 21:49

It's nearly 10pm and just checked the temp outside, it's 27oC. But it did remind me to take my HRT :-)

Throwaway380 · 09/08/2026 22:04

Sick of it, I was in such a good routine with exercise before this heat, but genuinely feel ill running in this so it’s all gone to waste.

I come across a lot of this on crazy websites and GB News.😆

I'm not saying they're deliberately talking shit or stupid or mad or anything, but you do have to wonder when folk don't even know what a Heatwave is.🤦‍♀️😳🙄

SonnyHoney · 09/08/2026 22:33

I just feel too tired and hot to do anything, I've become a lot lazier.

Crispynoodle · 09/08/2026 22:52

My poor DD has just had my DGD who at nearly 3 months has had to cope with every one as they live south west. Luckily they are coming to mine this week and she can’t wait for the cool Northern Ireland

tillyandmilly · 09/08/2026 23:16

If you have to work in an office and commute its not fun at all - yes if you can sit in your garden all day sipping cocktails great but sadly some of us have to sit in hot offices in uncomfortable office clothes!

Kickinthenostalgia · 09/08/2026 23:34

Tbh, I’ve just classed it as one heatwave since end of May because there’s not been much relief from it where I live. We had one day with thunderstorms end of June and then a bit of rain the other morning but was still bloody boiling after. Anything over 23 is a heatwave for me 😊

My train is fully air conditioned, and my office is fully air conditioned.

Working from home in this heat is the seventh circle of hell and I look forward to going to the office.

I like your description!

When I'm WFH this week I will definitely describe it as 'the seventh circle of hell' 😂
