What do you spend your money on that is worth it?

Inspired by a thread on here which was what can you afford but you don’t spend money on..

showed what value people place on “stuff”

so obviously disregarding basic food, health stuff what do you value enough to splurge your hard earned cash on?

An increasing list of beauty treatments - just for fun. It’s definitely more of a hobby than for any real purpose as I still look a right state and do not dress well.

PatioDwellers · 09/08/2026 08:32

Good quality meat. Organic free range eggs. I feel guilty enough about eating meat…so want it to be as good as possible.

don’t really care.

of course you don’t @ApplePieCinamon . That’s how people like you get on in life, by not giving a fuck about others and having no shame about that fact.

What exactly do you want me to do differently. All these places will still exist whether im a member or not. That’s a fact. And I choose to pay for that too. lol at giving a care about that, how is it going to change anyone’s life. You could take your attitude to basically anything posters have mentioned on this thread and challenge that. Not sure why you chose a kids members club

My animals and secondly my garden.
Oh, and mounjaro.

LadyLucksalot · 09/08/2026 09:00

My gym membership is worth every penny.

Also, proper cotton pyjamas. I have some very pretty ones with birds on them. I had a habit of wearing ratty old things until they fell apart. No more.

Proper loose leaf tea.

Good butter.

@ApplePieCinamon no judgement, just curious, what is an exclusive members only kids club? Like Annabel’s for kids?

mamaduckbone · 09/08/2026 09:19

Books, plants for the garden, decent running trainers.

I think this is just being rich.

That’s an interesting take and I did think it sounded that way when I wrote it and it gave me pause for thought.

Rich is subjective, I’d say we are comfortable, of course you need a base line of income to do these things, but as @Imanexcellentdrivercharliebabbit rightly said, there is an element of priorities in there.

i grew up really poor, the stereotypical benefit claiming parents, properly abusive too, so I understand not having money, I also earned it myself, I didn’t marry it my husband is successful, a high earner in his own right, but I earn double what he does.

On priorities. for example, I will never chose to fly business class or above. As I do so for work when I have to travel and I genuinly do not perceive it worth the money, it’s always about a 500- a thousand pounds an hour to sit there, sometimes more, sometimes less, obvs medium to long haul, and for me I work too hard to blow it like that, for me premium economy is just fine. And happy to go economy also,

my clothes yes I buy some new, but many I buy on vinted, always new to be fair, but it means I can buy a 300 pounds me and em dress for 100 and I also buy in the sales. I prefer to buy quality items, thay last, rather than fast fashion in abundance.

i don’t fill my house with flowers, I don’t buy expensive alcohol, I drink when i socialise, not at home. I don’t go out more than say twice a month normally to socialise, either out with husband or friends. I don’t buy coffees out or have takeaways.

my car is 13 years old, I bought it with 30k miles on the clock 10 years ago. It’s a 4x4 due to where I live, but in a decade I’ve put 20k miles on it. As we use it for local journeys when we need it, I’ve no intention of changing it until I have to, we use my husbands more.

as I grew up poor I chose to treat my daughter, she never expects or asks, ever, but like last night, I sent her a Neom candle as her work is stressful right now and her and her partner are buying a house and it’s also v stressful, my parents wouldn’t give me the shit off their shoes. I don’t want to be them.

so yes you need a baseline income , of course you’re right, but there is also choices in there which permit it and rich is subjective, to many people in the world, every single one of us in the uk is rich, we have running water, food, shelter.

Mounjaro. I was barely overweight with a BMI of 25 and could have lost it (again) myself, but I cannot overstate how mentally freeing it is to love my body again and not constantly think about what I’m eating, should I eat it, “being good”’”treat” rarara, with WLI it’s so freaking easy. I feel like I’ve freed up so much time and space in my mind!

How on Earth did you manage to get it?

Morningbee · 09/08/2026 10:29

Childcare, we don’t have any family nearby to help out or even cook us an occasional meal. With 3 young children, a few hours a week with a mental break and chance to get the house back to a reasonable state or even occasionally meet up with a friend for lunch, well worth the £10 per hour and as a bonus they are usually happy to just play when they get home and our batteries have been recharged to have the patience and energy to give them the attention they want. We could spend the money on a fancy holiday or cinema trips instead of the local park and a caravan holiday (which they seem to enjoy just as much) but think we all get much more out of nursery and holiday clubs

you pay a monthly membership. It has a soft play but also SO many classes like art, yoga, science , music and they are always changing and adding interesting ones.

Theres also an onsite restaurant with proper food and coffee.

A gym and work section too for the adults. They offer camps as well.

Softplays sessions must be pre booked so it’s not overrun with kids and always a good amount. There is always staff member in the softplay as well, to monitor kids staying in their age section. How lovely is that! Even better is that you can leave your child there for a session. My dd has been going there since 9m and the staff know her so well and she’s comfortable for me to leave her there while I go and have a coffee.

You can also invite a guest too.

It’s been perfect for us for the awfully rainy days when we need something to do in a calm but fun environment. My 4yo has done a few camp sessions as well since its school holidays. For us it is worth paying as it offers us so much than seeking out individual activities all the time.

Decent toilet paper. I have ibs and piles, I need a thick soft roll. I buy the thickest, softest I can find. We used recycled who gives a crap for years but I bought some back up stuff and realised how sore the other one was leaving me.

have you considered getting a bum cleaning tap installed by toilet? Absolute game changer

No, but I do use wype when needed and that helps.

I buy Andrex Ultimate Quilt. I do have to explain to the 10 year old that he doesn’t need as much as he uses!

perhaps I need one of those Japanese toilets that washes and dries and everything else in between.

Springbuck · 09/08/2026 20:02

My garden, literally £1000s. It’s my hobby and my pride and joy.

Bedding, I have to have the highest thread count available.

there are pharmacies that not prescribe at bmi 25. I think MedExpress and voy, but you need to email them,

ViciousCurrentBun · 10/08/2026 09:27

Holidays and for most of my life I always had a cleaner as I hate cleaning. Even when it was just a small flat and I was young and nursing so hardly flush I got the money together. Also eating out, when I started to be able to easily afford it I ate out almost every week. I don’t tend to hanker after objects.

I like Clinique as sensitive so my moisturiser is £55 a pot, I have found a Boots one I’m not allergic to and it’s £2 a pot so I use both now. I only buy very good quality clothes but I have always bought a lot secondhand. I’m handy with a needle, people call it up cycling I just call it altering.
